Around SBN: Newcastle Battle Injury Woes Ahead of Tottenham

Four years, $12.5 million (with $7 million guaranteed in 1st year). This just confirms many suspicions that Taylor is meant to be a backup/3rd down RB and not a starter.

are the chargers...

going to sit aside until dust settles as usual? and pick up 2nd and third tier FA players? Dansby and Rolle may be gone by end of today. Will they do anything to shore up their weakness or try to bring up draft picks?

Do the Chargers having a pressing need at FS that I’m not aware of?

The Chargers have two big weaknesses: RB and DT. Like I said above, Taylor is basically Sproles+ and that’s not what the Chargers are looking for. He is the only good free agent RB out there right now, and there are no good free agent DTs. Signing every free agent under the sun just for the sake of getting your name in the papers is stupid.

I’m sorry if you don’t like the success the Chargers have had with building through the draft. Perhaps you would be happier as a Redskins, Cowboys or (now) Bears fan. Those teams have won championship after championship since they started buying every top free agent they can.

I'm not saying...

they should sign every FA out there. That would be idiotic. Their stance is not even get in the game. They treat the FA market like “all of these top guys are over rated and over priced” We all know that’s simply not true. What off season FA signings that the Chargers have had that made huge impact for us last several seasons? I just want to know if their procedure of going thru draft and signing second (mostly third tier) FA players have produced a SB winner?

That absolutely IS true. What free agent has been worth the price? Which top-tier free agent has signed for a billion dollars and led his team to a super bowl championship?

John..

pls don’t get so defensive. I love your blog and knowledge. that’s why i’m here. also pls don’t put words in my mouth. I never said billion dollar top tier FAs. I’m saying go find a right fit weather it be first/second/third whatever! Look at the Saints signing Darren sharper. We could’ve used his services last year. He was impact player for Saints. was he not?

He was a FS. Unless you want to get rid of Weddle….

While I don't think the Chargers

should have signed Sharper.
I do think it speaks to your point of what FA has ever been signed and led his team to a championship.
Brees and Sharper are pretty good examples this season.

by JeromeB on Mar 5, 2010 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

Everyone knows, and most have admitted, that the Saints defensive turnaround had more to do with the change in defensive coordinator than it did Darren Sharper

Sharper by no means

deserves all the credit for the Saints Super Bowl win, but Brees and Sharper played a pretty big role in the Saints season and both were FA signings. Even if people don’t know or admit it.

Getting defensive is his M.O. ...

In John’s defense AP is essentially a troll’s nest.

was not a top-tier free agent, evident by the fact that he only got 1 offer to start and it was for backup QB money

I don't think the Chargers should

start going free agent crazy, but last time I checked we (the Chargers) have not been running out of space to display our Lombardi Trophies either.

I would actually be happy if the Chargers waited and picked up a couple second tier FAs.

by JeromeB on Mar 5, 2010 11:52 AM PST reply actions

yes..

even second tier would be great.

Free agents are the key to winning the super bowl. Please, somebody, inform AJ Smith.

by John Gennaro on Mar 5, 2010 12:18 PM PST up reply actions

They are not the key

but your strong anti FA stance is a little odd to me. Filling a weak spot or two on the roster with a free agent should not be looked at as a terrible thing. Some teams do overspend on FAs, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t improve your team by signing a couple once in while.
It seems like you do get a little crazy when someone even mentions the thought of signing a free agent. As well as overstate what the person is suggesting he would like to see the Chargers do.

by JeromeB on Mar 5, 2010 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

And neither Sharper nor Brees (merging the conversations) were “top-tier” free agents when they were signed. The thought was that Brees was too injured and Sharper was finished. They were guys that were picked to fill holes. The Saints didn’t, and don’t, go after free agents any more than the Chargers do.

The Saints

actually had a rather large number of FAs on last years team so I am going to disagree with you on that one.

About Brees and Sharper; whether a player is “top-tier” or how good he is, or if he is “too injured” or “finished”, those are choices that a GM has to make. The Saints valued the contribution that they thought Brees and Sharper could make to their team more than other teams valued the expected contribution to theirs. It turns out the Saints made the correct choice, for some teams perhaps neither would have been a great fit, it is hard to know. A GMs job is to decide what a players value and how he will fit in on the team. The value of a FA should not be judged on the amount of his contract, but on how produces on the field.

by JeromeB on Mar 5, 2010 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

and how many of those goes were top-tier free agents? Guys like Chris McAlister don’t make the argument against what the Chargers do. They just don’t draft as well as we do.

by John Gennaro on Mar 5, 2010 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

Again

I am not making an argument against what the Chargers do. And I am not saying that a team should sign “top tier” FAs, I am just saying that FAs are part of the equation.

The Saints may not draft as well as us (the Chargers) but they have won a Super Bowl. What is the Goal?

by JeromeB on Mar 5, 2010 10:45 PM PST up reply actions

On the topic of free agents putting teams over the top...

Dating back to 2000, only 2 super bowl MVPs were free agent pick-ups. I don’t really consider Kurt Warner to be FA since no one really wanted him anyway at that point. So, that makes 1. 1 super bowl MVP that was not drafted by the team he won the super bowl with. i am certain you could go back further and find that the percentage doesn’t change much. I would like to think that the super bowl MVP is probably the most important single person (aside from the QB, which most teams stick with from the draft if they are any good) with regards to winning a championship since the had the best game in the biggest game. Just a thought.

What the Chargers really need is to stop making idiot plays in the playoffs (don’t kick the flag!)

or headbutt

miss FG’s and throw an INT on our side of the field, tackle better.

by boltsgamedayfootball on Mar 5, 2010 2:03 PM PST up reply actions

I for one

have in no way been suggesting that any free agent that the Chargers might sign would become more valuable to the team than Rivers. Perhaps some people have suggested this but is has not been me. Nor do I think that most teams sign a free agent thinking that he will be the best or most valuable player on their team. Most teams sign free agents thinking that they might help contribute to making their team better. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, much like draft picks.

Considering the Bears also just signed Manu, and Peppers, now Taylor?

Who have they not signed?

The Bears

were not a good team. Even with these additions they will be hard pressed to make the playoffs. I would suspect their free agent signings were, at least in part, an effort to prevent a revolt by fans who are incensed about a combination of higher ticket prices and a team that showed no sign of returning to respectability.

I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

Bears have to sign FAs

They have no draft picks. I think they have two in the 4th and 6th or something like that.
They traded a bunch to Denver for Cutler.

How happy was everyone here when that happened? And then how happy were we all when he looked as bad as JaMarcus out there?

If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

Ladell Betts

Chargers should look into Betts. He was ailing last year but was a good hard runner and in the pass game the few years prior.
