Another New Contract/Old Player: Alfonso Boone
Just like Kris Wilson did earlier today, Alfonso Boone has now signed a 2-year contract to stay with the San Diego Chargers. After being signed as a free agent early in 2010, Boone was one of the most productive defensive linemen for the Chargers all season.
At least the Chargers won't need to draft a DE this year. Between Luis Castillo, Vaughn Martin, Jacques Cesaire, Travis Johnson and Alfonso Boone, that spot is locked up with a good mix of young talent and wily veterans.

Kind of an odd move to sign him to a two year deal
I’m sure they made it so that they can cut him in 2011 without much damge but I wonder what the logic is behind signing him and Wilson into a year where there may be a work stoppage.

If there's a work stoppage, they won't get paid anyways.
So really all that matters is the guaranteed money.
Right but who knows what kind of cap structure the NFL will have when the work stoppage is over.
Not saying that either contract will have any major effect on the Chargers operations post new CBA just kind of interesting that they gave both players a second year under the conditions.

It's easy
either player could’ve easily gotten a two-year deal elsewhere….the Chargers wanted to keep both players.

Wilson Yes
I’m not too sure about Boone though.

I’m not saying they were. I’m just assuming that the Chargers weren’t the only team in the league that was interested in them.

that's a safe assumption....
seeing when you go 13-3. teams tend to pick over your team with a fine tooth comb.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
Good to see he'll be around.
He ceratintly exceeded my expectations, low as they were.
Off topic
Is there anyway that KOs tweets could stop showing up in the left hand margin since he’s not a Charger anymore?
He’s not on anyone’s roster, and he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of coming back. Although he’s not tweeting, Jamal Williams’ twitter is still a part of that widget too.

I would actually agree.
I think there’s a zero chance Kassim is ever a Charger again.

not liking some of these moves
Lots of comments about “Hey, we knew we wanted Cro gone, so at least we got something…”. Why, exactly, did we want to get rid of him given we do not have a superior replacement. “Off-Field Issues”? If the player is doing something malicious and truly foul, OK, but if I would argue his personal life is his if he does not affect team play.
And Williams? WTF? I don’t think a single player’s loss hurt us more than Williams. I was hoping we would retain Williams, start grooming his replacement, get a stud pass rusher, and retain Cro.
Peppers is gone, Wilfork is gone, trade Cro, release Williams. Yes we signed some of our guys on for FA below market, but, as of right now, our team is weaker than last year. And substantially weaker than if we retained some of these guys.
AJ knows his job a lot better than I do, but I sure hope there is method to his madness and it is not just saving money.
JWall hasnt signed elsewhere
So firstly Im going to leave that one alone. And yes everyone did know Cro was being moved, and many including myself thought we would get really hosed on the deal. A conditional 2nd in 2011 is actually better than I expected.
Now whether we should have traded him is debatable, but it was a sure thing the Chargers were not going to resign him. So getting a conditional 2nd isnt bad imo all things considered.
Basically we lost a RB who did nothing last year in LT
A NT that didnt even play in JWall
a CB that pissed off the FO so much we would have had to release him anyway
a above average blocking FB with versatility in Manu
And we gained so far
a 2011 2nd/3rd conditional pick
and like 15mil in cap space
ok...
My point about JW is that we would be better with him back, not that he contributed much last year. I would argue that him healthy at NT is the most important position on the team. Now, is he worth the money next year? I don’t know, but it makes me nervous. But our D with him in, historically (even recent history) is much better with him than without.
If no one takes JWall, than I see your point: AJ’s assessment is in line with his peers. My fear is that he will get picked up, and contribute very well to his new team. He is getting old, so needs lots of breaks, but I expect him to be good for a few more seasons.
Yes, Cro annoyed the FO, but my point is that a FO issue or a Cro issue? Again, he brings his crap into the team environment and effects play, OK. If not, I would argue the FO needs to decide that players’ personal lives are theirs.
I was sad to see LT go, and doubt there was some limited role he could play, but I get that.
On the $15m, if that goes back into other players, cool. That’s AJ’s job to make those kind of calls. But my fear is that with CBA gone, teams can go below the old floor and that SD’s FO has decided to save some money so the money won’t go back into players, but back to Spanos. That is not AJ’s call, he would be executing that from above, but his moves make me nervous.
I guess we’ll have to wait on the Jwall thing, if the Chargers resign him cheap, AJ would come out looking pretty good this offseason until the draft. Then we could re evaluate him. The Spanos family could very well try to pocket cash this year, but that remains to be seen. The Chargers want a new stadium, and they have some guys that need to be paaapaaaPAID. So it makes sense for them to scale back spending now considering the CBA situation, and doing that by cutting very old players is the best way to go about it.
And as bad as our D seemed it was our offense that looked pathetic and lost the game.
I'm liking the offseason so far
I believe A.J. is handling everything as well as he can at this point, not to jinx him. I would like to see Williams re-sign for one year. We’ll see what happens with Sproles, I feel like he’s not staying put at one yr/$7.3
I was amazed at how many times I said to myself last year “Boone’s our best D-lineman on the field right now” honestly.
Now they don't need to draft a DE?
They released their best D line player. They could not stop the run without him. This is typical of the Charger’s management. They are not interested in winning a superbowl (see extending Norv’s contract; 13-3 and again losing to the Jets because Kaeding can not make a somewhat high pressure field goal). I can see why Eli did not want to come here.
And to think he joined just to post it.
