Chargers Trade Antonio Cromartie to Jets

The major changes to the San Diego Chargers roster continue, with Antonio Cromartie being traded to the New York Jets for a 2011 3rd round draft pick (that could become a 2nd round draft pick based on Cromartie's 2010 performance).

While I would've preferred to trade Cromartie to a non-conference team, this is not a bad move and the Chargers actually got very good value for a guy that they absolutely did not want on the roster anymore.

The list of positions the Chargers need to fill after today's moves: Starting RB, Nickel CB, Starting NT.

I wanted a 2010 pick

But this is basically a 2010 3rd, witch is about what I expected. Its better than a scrub RB and a 2010 5th.
Man I sure hope we dont have to play the Jets in the playoffs again because their D went from great, to straight up ridiculous.

by AirNorval on Mar 4, 2010 8:33 PM PST reply actions

Equivalent to a 2010 3rd. The idea is that a 2nd rounder next year is roughly equal to a third rounder this year as far as value goes.

Disappointed

this trade doesnt make our 2010 team, or 2011 team any better. In fact, it weakens our secondary and our depth at CB. We got so many holes to fill this year, I just hate the trade. We sold low, weakened our secondary, and dug out another hole to fill. Bad move.

by Bluelightning on Mar 5, 2010 12:57 AM PST up reply actions

surprising trade value

since everyone knew he wasn’t wanted here and if they waited he probably would have been released. What worries me the most, is CB depth was thin last year, they only had 3 on active roster. I know they had a lot of DL for the rotation, so they were short on a roster spot for a CB. That leaves a few practice squad guys, Cason (who looked more lost than Sammy Davis did) and Jammer. They better explode on the pass rush or the D could be 2008 vintage. They can’t go sign more than 1 FA, and no extra picks this year with 2 very pressing needs at RB and NT.

by glamisdave on Mar 4, 2010 8:36 PM PST reply actions

Good explanation on Chargers.com

They’re TOTALLY limited to 1 FA — as long as it’s someone they can sign to under 4 mill a year.

The Chargers, as one of the final eight playoff teams, can sign only one UFA with a first-year salary of $5.807 million or more. The team may sign additional UFAs at that salary range only after losing one at a comparable salary. It may sign an unlimited number of players with a first-year salary of up to $3.862 million

by Andy (allfield) on Mar 4, 2010 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

That doesnt count guys that were cut though I think, not that it matters. We wont be active in FA anyway

by AirNorval on Mar 4, 2010 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

good point(s)

the UFA limitation is only for UFAs whose contract expired, guys who were waived/cut are not restricted by the final 8 plan.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 5, 2010 8:41 AM PST up reply actions

Hopefully this allows for some draft flexibility

Because we might not get a shot at the RBs we want in the late 2nd.

by AirNorval on Mar 4, 2010 8:36 PM PST reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised to see AJ take a NT, then CB, and wait until round 3 for one of the bigger backs to pair with Sproles. One of Gerhart, Hardesty, Tate, etc.. might still be around right?

by BFDC on Mar 4, 2010 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

sadly I doubt tate lasts until our late 2nd, he has been skyrocketing up draft boards

by AirNorval on Mar 5, 2010 12:35 AM PST up reply actions

um, no

He’s been moving up. But not that high. Scouts, inc still has him graded as a high 4th rounder.

Fexibility

I wouldn’t be surprised if AJ packaged the 3rd/2nd in 2011 with this years and move up to take the RB or NT we didn’t pick in the first round.

But, the Jets are also very good at getting pressure on the QB. Great place to play CB.

I hate to say it, but maybe.

He will have Revis shutting down half of the field, a great pass rush and a good run defense.

That’s an understatement RT @BarrettVT @ro72 dropoff in pass rush affected defense as a whole. I also think his head got a LITTLE too big.

Technically not correct

The Bolts led the NFL in sacks in 2006, which was not Cromartie’s big year (he wasn’t even a starter). His 10 pick year came in 2007, when they were 5th in the league and had 19 fewer sacks than the year prior.

He may be correct about the drop off being a result of the Chargers sack numbers/pressure falling the last 2 years. However, his surrounding cast in NY should help him. He won’t play #1 receivers because of Revis, and the Jets front 7 is very strong. This could give him ample opportunities for big plays. Hopefully it won’t and he’ll continue his decline.

I don't think it is really that many "key" changes

LTs production will be matched or bettered by anyone that plays next year. JW was a great NT but he basically didn’t play at all last year, so there will not really be a change there. It appears that the only “key” player that will be gone from this years team is Cromartie (if you consider him a key player.

what distractions are you refering to?I think you’re just repeating the dislikes of him that some people here have.So he has a bunch of kids,SO…none of us take care of em.What was or is your complaint about him? The missed or non attempt block? I think you’re just criticizing for the sake of criticizing bro.

by Gorditoe1 on Mar 4, 2010 10:11 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I'll just keep it simple cause with him gone it doesn't matter

Off the top of my head, the allegations that were put on him in November after the win in Denver. Regardless of the outcome with the investigation, you cannot take away the bad publicity that Cromartie received, and more importantly the bad pub that the Chargers organization received. That is what I was specifically referring to, not to mention past issues that he has been involved in that have been discussed here.

As the kids go, that also puts negative pub on the team because anytime that his name was mentioned with overdue child payments, it was said as San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie. I’d rather not be associated with that as a fan of this team. That’s my personal opinion.

And why should we be taking care of his kids? He should be the one doing that.

by cspfan on Mar 4, 2010 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

you see

That was THE MOST vague explanation EVER….that was what you came up with?Y ou just dislike the dude point blank period. And I never said that WE should take care of his kids.I guess you’re ok with the multiple DUI’s that VJ and SP95 have been mentioned in though right?I hate it when dudes just hate on other dudes just to hate.

by Gorditoe1 on Mar 4, 2010 11:05 PM PST up reply actions

You said, “SO…none of us take care of em.” I took that as you saying that we don’t take care of them either so we have no room to talk. Sorry if you were saying something else.

It’s a stretch to say I’m “hating” on Cromartie. I’m simply saying that I believe Cason will perform as good if not better than Cromartie has the past 2 years without the off-field distractions. So I prefer Cason.

This isn’t about Jackson or Phillips. I’m definitely not ok with those either.

by cspfan on Mar 4, 2010 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

WELL...

IF Cason performs better great, but he was looking pretty bad against a bad team last season when he got the start. We can only hope he has great work ethic and a great training camp so he CAN perform better and be an asset to the team.

by Gorditoe1 on Mar 4, 2010 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

i dont get the obsession with his kids

On the radio the other day I hear a laundry list of guys with multiple kids with multiple women who did fine in the nfl. Marshall Faulk was the most prominant (6 by 4 women). I guess Travis Henry is the Steve Garvey of the nfl though.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 5, 2010 9:39 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

neither do I

I’ve read this past year he’s done a ton to start getting his life back on track. We all know he admitted to being lazy in practice during the ’08 season, relying on his talent to save him from poor preparation. With help from Jacques Cesaire (who leads a team Bible study from his house), Cro became a Christian. And he married the mother of his most recent children, and states he is working on becoming a better husband and father.

Now I know most of the Cromarie bashers don’t care about any of the above, but doesn’t that just serve to reinforce the idea that if we hate a guy for his on-field play, that’s what we should stick to bashing?

Cason looked terrible last yr, he was benched for a reason. We’re taking a CB and NT(if available) first two picks. Can never have too many good CB’s in my book.

by notablogger on Mar 4, 2010 10:40 PM PST reply actions

At this point, I can’t help but think that it’s gonna be about more than just the draft. Out of necessity, the Chargers are gonna have to be active in free agency. Or trades or somethin’.

AJ says he’s got a plan. He’s starting to remind me of Gene Hackman in “The Poseidon Adventure.” “The kitchen’s under water, so we gotta go this way!” Okay… If you say so… But you better be right. Meanwhile, I gotta carry Shelley Winters on my back.

Considering all the negative vibe going around I was positive there was no to get value of this fluffy soft player. But I’ll give AJ props I thought a 4-5 rounder seemed reasonable, so getting a 3rd with option for it to be a second even if it in 2011, doesn’t sound bad at all. They made something out of nothing, good job.

Funny reading all the Cromartie bashing

I remember a fair number of posts during this past season where people would brag about how the Chargers had one of the best CB duos in the league. Now all of sudden the guy sucks.
I’m o.k. with the trade, as there were obviously things about Cromartie that the Chargers felt made him more than expendable. But he was a talented CB in coverage and he very well could be missed.

by JeromeB on Mar 5, 2010 12:11 PM PST reply actions

Agreed

I don’t think Cromartie sucks, I think he’s very talented. I just also happen to think Antoine Cason is very talented.
