Should We Draft Jared Odrick, DE/DT, Penn State?

  • Arm Length: 34 in, Hand Size: 9 3/4 in.
  • College: Penn State

Odrick excels in the power game holding well against the run, even as he drew double teams and bull rushing interior linemen with good success. The holes in his game are a lack of elite athleticism. He's no immobile fatty, but doesn't shine in pursuit either. Odrick would be a good 1st round pick in the later half of the round for a team looking for a player who is strong against the run, but can still be a factor pushing the pocket against the pass.

The draft buzz has many suggesting that Odrick's fit as a 3-4 DE could have him drafted far earlier than expected, a-la Tyson Jackson (considered a mid 1st round pick, Jackson was taken #3 overall by the Chiefs).

His lateral movement has been held against him when talking about playing outside, as a college DT, moving outside to the five technique defensive end in the 3-4.

"The fact that he's got a great motor and had great production in college is his highest testament," said Mike Mayock, a draft analyst for the NFL Network. "He's got great size, his motor runs all the time, and he's smart and tough. It will be tough for some of those teams at the end of the first round to pass on him."

He has a long frame, with big hands, uses his bull rush well, as well as having a decent inside out move, gets off the snap better than most, and seems to know the precise moment the ball will be snapped to get leverage, has a good initial burst, and can penetrate consistently into the backfield.

Work ethic and personality had been questioned pre 2009 because of an incident which resulted in him getting citied for disorderly conduct. However he seemed to turn a corner and everyone seems to have positive things to say about Odrick's enthusiasm to get better. Posting his best season statistically while also facing more double teams than previous years is just one indicator of this.

I voted no, but I want to put in a qualifier.

If none of our targeted RBs are available, and we can’t get/don’t want Cody or Williams, then Odrick would make a nice consolation prize for value-at-need. But that would be settling.

If he’s still there at #40, that might be a different story.

Exactly.

Now that we have a nice new pick in the second round (thank you clipboard jesus), I don’t see any reason to take a guy like Odrick in the first. Who knows, maybe he won’t even be there when our first round pick comes along, crazier things have happened.

by CaDuck on Mar 27, 2010 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I dont Odirck will be there

I would welcome us drafting him, and I consider him a more likely selection than both Mathews and Cody. That said I like the mix we currently have at DE.

IMO

We can say we like the “mix” at several positions: OL, DL, LB, DB. But that doesn’t mean we can’t get better. And Odrick would be an improvement over most of those guys.

I understand the rationale that we have “greater needs” or “bigger fish to fry,” but for me, it’s about relative value. If there are quality RBs — who fit the scheme of the team — available throughout the draft, but a big drop-off in DLs after the first 5, then I would jump at Odrick.

I'm still thinking CB

for value in the 1st. There’s a very good chance we can still get Best or Matthews at 40 even if we take the best CB available at 28. DE/NT in the 3rd/4th is perfectly reasonable. Arthur Jones/Linval Joseph.

by Bluelightning on Mar 27, 2010 2:17 PM PDT reply actions

that's a pretty small bench press number (26)

especially for the type of work we ask of our DEs. I’m not sure he would be a big step up from any of our existing guys. I think he’ll be gone before we would find value in picking him (4+ round)

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 27, 2010 7:42 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

26 reps doesn’t seem like he has the pure upper-body strength to become a dominant 3-4 end. He might be a good rotational player but I think he needs to be stronger up top. It would be interesting to see what some of our current DEs pushed when they were drafted. As a #1 pick, or even a high #2 I would like to see numbers in the area of the low 30’s.

by MacDeezul on Mar 28, 2010 5:04 AM PDT up reply actions

The bench is overrated, especially for a guy with that length

You use leverage and lower body strength to move large object, anyone who has tried to move a heavy box knows this.

But it is a good indication

Of overall dedication in the weight room. 26 is a good 9 less than you would expect.

I dont know if I really agree with this

Some people like the bench others dont. Go to the gym for a week you’ll always see some douche bagg that never does anything but curls.
No cardio, no tris, no lower body just curls. Dude has great dedication to his biceps and the gym but is a total tool.

That's like

How Nebraska players always do well in bench since outdoing each other in bench is part of their culture there.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Plus

Line play not only has to do with having a strong base, there is also quite a lot of “hand play” that goes into it. Getting your hands onto your opponent while keeping there hands off you is a big part of it, and that is closely related to bench press strength. Not that it’s a deal killer, but I think we have enough youth at DE and this guy doesn’t seem to be a big upgrade, plus we have bigger needs elsewhere.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 28, 2010 9:10 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

While I do agree we have nice youth on the DL

And I love the “prospects” at DE. I think this guy would be a major upgrade, especially since he does offer some value as a interior pass rusher on nickel downs

Bigger needs elsewhere yes, but could we pass on this guy at 28? I doubt it.

I think we need a havier guy to plug up the middle

I just want to get paid to draw naked girls, is that so much to ask?

by tonoxtono on Mar 27, 2010 10:53 PM PDT reply actions

He's definitely a DE on a 3-4.

We’re deep with end prospects, but have only one proven guy, and there are two positions, after all.

I would not take Odrick at 28 and I don't think will be there at 40.

But if he is there at 40 and he is the top player on the board I think it would be a good pick.

by Grey Suit on Mar 28, 2010 9:12 AM PDT reply actions

THANK YOU!!

I’ve been calling for Odrick the last 3 weeks! Our defensive line is weakest at Left Defensive End, Jacques Cesaire is starting….come on. I know everyone is on the whole NT/RB in the 1st scenario but I just don’t see it happening..
1)Nwagbuo and Martin are both young, developing players who showed promise last season.
2)Adding a rookie NT to our already young rotation wouldn’t benefit us right now, we’re going to have to wait for him to develop so we might as well let Nwagbuo and Martin compete.
3) The Chargers are really into Antonio Garay, he’s a Rivera guy from Chicago and he’s been getting the job done since day one.

The Depth chart for Left Defensive End is Jacques Cesaire and then Alfonso Boone….that’s got to be the biggest hole on the entire team. Atleast sproles is an actual threat to make a play. We can find a good running back at #40.

by ZionKing on Mar 29, 2010 10:03 AM PDT reply actions

You are forgetting about Travis Johnson

To me, he’s the starter next year if nothing changes. Him or Boone. Martin will definitely be in the rotation. I have my doubts that Cesaire will continue to be a Charger next season.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Plus, Ryon Bingham is also in the mix, he was IRed last year. He may be in the same boat as Jacques, but he was a super-sub before last year (and at 28 is still relatively young)

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 29, 2010 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I left out Bingham

because ZionKing didn’t mention him like with Cesaire and he’s definitely in the same boat with Cesaire. He could get voted off the island quick if he’s not 100% back and Johnson, Boone and Martin all look healthy.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I didn't forget about Bingham...

I just don’t think he’s a factor for the starting position. He’s a great contributor and he can spell guys when needed just like Cesaire, but neither of those guys can cut it as a starter. Boone is turning 35 and his responsibilities are minimal. Travis Johnson is the only guy who really has a shot at starting, i’m not too sure the organization is ready to give him the starting role right off the bat but It is a possibility… Odrick on the other hand can start from day one and has the potential to be a much better player than anyone we have now.

by ZionKing on Mar 29, 2010 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I think a lot depends on the club's current evaluation of Martin

If they think he is the future (this year or next) starter at DE, then I don’t think we look to take a DE this high. If after one year they feel that his ceiling is backup, then I think we could see them try and get a DE in the first round (I assume Odrick will be gone by our 2nd round pick).

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 29, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see them switching Martin to NT

After they spent a year preparing him for the DE position. He’s too raw to be learning new positions every year and then expect him to succeed. It’s best that they stick with him as a DE and use Nwagbuo, Scott and possibly a rookie for that middle spot.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
