Whitehurst Prefers Seattle, Waiting on Trade
For those hoping that Whitehurst chose Seattle, it seems that he has. Also, as predicted, the loser of the Whitehurst sweepstakes (Arizona) signed former Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson.

I'm very interested
to see what we get. I predict trading 2nd rounders.

This is killing me
They said 48 hours and that was at least 72 hours ago. Rarely have I felt such suspense over an impending trade, probably because we have no idea on the particulars.
Well
Now you have to wait at most 7 days. The question is: Why would the Chargers wait that long?
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Also
Should I put up a ranking for QBs since it’ll be likely we’ll draft one? Should I subtract value from guys like Tebow, McCoy, Lefevour who didn’t get to spend a lot of time holding clipboards? Tony Pike spent a lot of time with the clipboard (and making all those funny signs on the sidelines). I’m just saying.

Well we know that McCoy and Bradford both have shoulder issues. Raises big doubts about their ability to hold the clipboard.
Add Tebow to that list...
He may revert to holding the clipboard too low.

Oh, wait
I should probably read my own links.
Apparently the normal RFA rules don’t apply. The way it is going to work here is that Whitehurst signs his tender with the Chargers and then gets traded to the Seahawks. No offer sheets involved.

We're waiting too
I think a lot of Seattle’s off season moves depend on this deal. I think the idea is that Carroll and co. are not sold on any of the QBs in this draft.
At least we aren't the Raiders?

Carroll is obsessed with the roll out pass
And the Clip Board is suppose to be solid in this respect; in theory of course.
First Tomlinson, now Whitehurst.
The team is running out of icons.
I’m sure we’ll be able to find another #3 Qb. However I just don’t know how we’ll be able to replace the sexy that will depart with Charlie.
Clipboards across San Diego will be held at half-height today in honor of his passing.
I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

Can't be lower than a third
or the Chargers would not have accepted the deal.

I don’t see worse than a fourth. I see fourth as a worst case scenario (eps since they just added a fourth with the Darryl Tapp trade) and at best, a complex swapping of picks that has us swapping some high level picks.
Swapping firsts or swapping seconds.. both options sound intriguing even if we have to give up some lower pick to make it happen.
I think they want to trade out of the 6th pick
Swapping firsts and getting a 3rd and Whitehurst?
At least we aren't the Raiders?

+1
I don’t get the assumption that it will be for a 4th round pick, which is basically what it is now Seattle obtained a second pick in that round through a trade.
Seattle did not have the required compensation so had to negotatiate acceptable terms with that Chargers. They can say no if it’s less than compensation Cardinals would give, leaving Whitehurst with one option, which he’d probably take.
Worse than a 4th just doesn’t compute.
I anticipate the worst to be a 4th and a second late round pick (6th or 7th), with a swap of picks in the 2nd or 1st (where we’d have to give a little extra on our side) more likely.
A big surprise but not out of the realms of possibilty is a trade involving Vincent Jackson given Seattle’s pursuit of a #1 WR. Perhaps #6, a 4th and a player like Justin Forsett for Vincent Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst.
I don't see Jackson going
AJ’s not dumb. He realizes that he’s got a good thing going with Rivers and Jackson and even with the run-ins with the law, Jackson still seems to be on his good side.
Letting go of Jackson would be a huge overvaluing of draft picks. Sure, you could get a high first and a third for him. But you could take a high first round pick ten times and you’re still not guaranteed to get a guy like Jackson. Barring new off-field issues (knock on wood) I see Jackson being a Charger for a very long time.
Jackson could very well be in the mix
As much as I hate to admit it. It would seem like this trade isnt going to be a standard thing, because its taking so freakin long to go down.
My guess is the Chargers trade Whitehurst, 2011 3rd, their late 1st in 2010 for Seattle’s 2010 mid first.
Then Seattle can use the Chargers late first to make a play at Marshall if they wish.
This is what I'm thinking.
I’d be quite happy with this. I couldn’t imagine that the Seahawks wouldn’t be happy, either. #28 plus about 400 points on the chart (2x unknown 3rd-rounder) is a pretty even trade for #14, actually.

For what it’s worth, Barnwell of FO seems to think the Chargers will get one of Seattle’s fourth rounders.

Bloody Elbow // " looks like your comment violated rule #4. and it’s a heck of a rule, rule #4" - Kid Nate
That's weird to me, considering his tender was for a 3rd.
I know they aren’t technically signing him to an offer sheet, but still.

Acee seems to think there is more to it than that
He hasn’t given details, so it’s kind of sketchy, but I’m inclined to lean towards whatever Acee has been hearing over Barnwell’s guess.

It depends if AJ seems Whitehurst as a #2
Eventually they won’t re-sign Volek. If they trust him as a #2 then then they should re-sign him. If he has no future, then trade him for any draft pick, considering we are going to lose him next year anyway.
What does that have to do with Barnwell being wrong about us getting a 4th rounder for the clipboard?

My Conspiracy Theory
The Seahawks are moving to a 3-4; it will be Whitehurst and Merriman for their second first round pick, fourteenth overall.

Carroll is obsessed with huge pass rushers
because his scheme requires one DE to play both DT and DE, but I’m not sure Merriman would fill that need.
Plus I dont know if Merriman would appreciate signing in the pacific northwest, and he could block this from going down by refusing to sign longterm.
With that said Im thinking this deal involves more than just the clip board, but my theory involves Vjack.
Seahawks picked up
Chris Clemmons from the iggles, so Carroll isn’t totally obsessed with size. At 240 pounds he’s a bit light for DE, but as an OLB that’s probably ok. Could be nothing, but it got me wondering. Merriman would probably prefer a big market team, but the Seahawks could just franchise him if he plays well. They have Cole at DT who has the weight to play NT.
I can’t see the Chargers trading Jackson, but the Seahawks certainly need a WR too so you never know.

And I doubt the Seahawks will run a 34
I know at USC they just ran a shifted 43 most of the time, called the 43 under.
Schneider
helped build a pretty good 3-4 defense though. I’m just speculating, but when I look at it just right, it seems possible.

“Deal would b Seahawks receive 2010 2nd rnd pick (60) & Whitehurst from SD. SD gets r 2nd rnd pick (40) in 2010 and our 3rd rnd pick in 2011”
This sounds like what the deal would look like. Fleeced haha

Meanwhile AJ is stacking 2011 3rds. Thats 3 we have so far, with one that has a chance to turn into a late 2nd.
Not bad for the clip board and a CB we were going to have to cut.
That sounds about right actually
The swap of the 2nd rounders being compensation for the 2011 3rd being of lesser value than 2010 3rd.
Sounds about right?
We just traded into the top of the second and received a 2011 third (which will be high cause the Hawks suck) for our late 2nd and a clip board.
That is a excellent deal for the Chargers. Swapping 2nds it itself equals about a 3rd.
Wow
Wonder if AJ had a gun or something. That’s pretty nice, I’m guessing Mt. Cody and a great RB.

All I can say is "WOW"
Only AJ could get what amounts to a 2010 3rd and a 2011 3rd for a clip board.
That's awesome value for Charlie Clipboard.
We got back more than we spent on him in 2006. Never thought that would happen.

I have to think
We will now draft either Matthews or Best and then go for Cody or C. Thomas in the 2nd. Or vice versa. I seriously doubt any WRs or CBs or Ss get picked with those.

Cam Thomas from North Carolina
Like Cody, probably a two-down player. Big run stuffer, little pass rush.
I’m liking this a lot. Would you rather Cody or Cam Thomas?

Not bad grammar. Just recollections of a deranged killer.
Thomas
Currently Scouts, Inc has Thomas with a grade of 85 and Cody at 82. To a certain extent I trust those grades when evaluation the overall worth of a prospect.

Cody sounds like just a lazy big guy to me
Or that’s how the media’s spinning it.. I can’t actually attest to that fact.
They sound like they have similar skill sets. That is, big space eater that will probably get taken out on passing downs. But Cam Thomas (at least from what I’ve read) seems to have the team-first kind of attitude you want in the guy anchoring your line and Cody has a propensity to take plays off.
For what it’s worth, Mockingthedraft’s scouting reports for each:

All I can say is
F__k yea!
Now I’m more excited about this draft and we’ll have plenty of picks stockpiled for next year, this is great!
Good
his technique with that clipboard, was getting sloppy.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!
Awesome.
Good deal all around. The Seahawks spend a late 2nd in net draft value, don’t actually lose a pick until next year, and get a former 3rd-round pick with several years experience studying under Norv Turner and backing up Philip Rivers. He’s been on a winning NFL team, warmed up in the playoffs, played in the preseason: no rookie has done any of these things.
As for the Chargers, he was more-or-less extraneous. Now we can carry an extra DL. What’s a #3 QB good for?
1) Future potential. Philip Rivers is young, with a long contract. Too soon to consider.
2) Compete w/#2. Billy Volek is a proven veteran who could start for many teams. Not happening.
3) Emergency backup. We have a good OL for pass-protection. If worse comes to worst, there’s Legedu Naanee.

Great deal for the Chargers
and a really good deal for Whitehurst too. He gets paid, and with Hasselbeck missing so much time the past couple of years, he could easily move into the starting position sometime during the season. Congrats to all.
