Maybe I'm jumping the gun but...
I'm a little mad that Chargers have not had much of an offseason with picking up talent. I recognize that we may be concentrating on something for the draft and it's important to draft the right players...but. I just don't see how we can sit by and let Kansas City, Oakland, and Denver beef up their defenses while we lose players. Not saying that I don't think we will not be back at the top of the division because we all know Russell, Cassell, and Orton are not premier quarterbacks, but their defenses can put a hold on a good offense.
I think I would just like to see Chargers go out and pursue some names out there. I know we picked up a nickel CB in Strickland and I like that, but lets make some noise in the defensive line or offensive line category. By this point, I would think we are out to get a RB in the draft and I like that there is enough depth to get one. Maybe I'm just blowing hot air, but after losing Cro, LT, Osgood, and JWall, I have seen these other teams especially KC go out and hit the market hard. I do hope Cardinals sign Whitehurst!
GO CHARGERS!

raiders, chiefs, KC
are all big rebuilding projects. they are trying everything to see what will work. The chargers have a core. KC and denver are picking up a lot of older guys. NFL football is a young man’s game, as the season goes on they’ll have a tougher and tougher time.
So here’s the deal. San Diego is good but really at it’s heart is a small-market team. The money isn’t their to chase big names. They have to hit home runs 4 guys in the draft and a UFA every year to stay on level.
AJ is going to have to go out and earn next year. We need Linemen, corners, running backs.

I think we should have gone after Quinn
He is the only QB good looking enough to replace Charlie Whitehurst as our clipboard holder. Stupid AJ

Scouting report says
That Quinn was not satisfied holding a clipboard. We need someone who is committed to that role.

Of the losses so far
(Osgood, Jamal, LT, and Cro) how much do you think they contributed to our 13-3 season? I would say not much, or at least their contribution is pretty easily replaced.
If Nate Kaeding doesn’t have the worst kicking day in the history of bad kicking days we make a serious run at the SB. So, the sky is not falling, we don’t need to do a whole lot. By getting rid of Cro, we get rid of a locker room malcontent and can replace him with Cason who may not have the same level of talent but at least will give effort and should be good enough. By getting rid of LT, we can start looking for a RB with some future upside, instead of endlessly wondering if next year is the year LT is going to find his groove (IMO the groove is gone). Jamal didn’t really play last year and we are getting Bingham back off IR this year. Losing Osgood sucks, but ST is really the place for young up and comers, not a place for a veteran with no future as a starter on your team. I don’t think the drop off there will be too noticable.
So our team shouldn’t be worse than last year. With a good draft and some of our youngsters maturing (I’m looking at you English) I think we have the potential to be much better next year.
Plus, Free Agency is a crapshoot, for every Brees/Favre you have half a dozen Haynesworth/Cantys who crush their teams salary structure and don’t provide the value for the money.

Well said
Great summary of where things are. What role will Bingham play? Can he start at NT?
No one really knows
If we draft a NT, then he’s on the bubble of guys to get cut. If not, then he will likely be back in the rotation there. I see Nwagbuo as the incumbent starter at NT until something changes.

And my hunch is (and I can only call it a “hunch” since I don’t have past evidence to back me up) that AJ will sign some players as OTAs get into gear. That’s where he and the braintrust will get a clearer look at potential weaknesses. And there will be players available, and they will be cheaper than if he were to sign them now.

settle down, lil buddy
name some names. who did you want here? which FA linemen are good enough to start over the chargers’ current guys?
and which AFC west acquisition has you freaking out? I know Williams went to the donkeys, but who else is bothering you? Thomas Jones? Ryan Lilja? Meh.
Who did Lilja sign with?
As I recall, he can be a great guard or play like a turnstile from week to week.
Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

Well...
I don’t think we’ll miss Jamal too much, after all he didn’t play this season, and we managed to do OK with a rotation, it improved towards the end of the season.
With Cro again i’m confident in Cason, of course we’ll now need a back-up CB for depth, but Cason will do OK as a starter and to be honest Cro was overrated anyway.
We have a good enough special teams to replace Kasim, but i think people overlook the fact that LT actually scored 12 TDs last season, he wasn’t nearly as done as people made out. He wasn’t a 20 touch a game back anymore, but he was still pretty effective inside the 10, that’s hard to replace.
I don't think people think LT's "done"
but he is more or less just an average back now. He is still good in short yardage/goaline situations, which is why he did have so many TDs last year, but he’s no longer worth what we would’ve had to pay him to keep him. He’s now more or less a Tim Hightower or Laurence Maroney. He’ll get the job done in goal line situations, but rarely breaks off any spectacular runs.

Yup
Hightower and LT are practically the same guy at this point. Except LT is older, more expensive and has an injury history.

Listen to Jim Trotter. The goal line is the toughest place to run of all!

Well LT wasn't very good at it in 2009
And Hightower is pretty much as good as LT there as well. I’m telling you they are the same.

That guy bugs me so much. I can’t follow him on twitter anymore. He’s such a Charger hater now.

Sort of
I’ve heard him in interviews with Hacksaw. He is very optimistic about the Chargers this coming season. But, I guess it could also be interpreted that he’s not optimistic about the rest of the AFC West.

LT was done here in this system
LT was done here in this system; maybe he lost his mojo maybe not….but he certainly didn’t fit in this offense any more. He came and help resurrected a pitiful team; but Norv was going to use his talents, his legs seemed weary.. A new start in a system he likes will help; as as the Chargers, we are not rb dependent any more. Unless there is a stud that the staff is in love with it, I doubt will draft one int he first round. RB are just not that valuable in this system……moving on, we will be fine, he will be fine
Jamal’s loss was over come last year in terms of w-l record; but to be honest I would have redone his contract, the line got pushed around a lot. Our defense was soft, played better as year went; but it was soft and out of position most of the time….I see the first 2 picks leaning to the defense, our offense put enough on the board, our defense was nerve wracking even they got it done
The cornerback vs rb at the 2nd pick will be interesting tug of war; I believe cb will win out unless they love a guy on the board. Cro was soft and off the field headache waiting to be migraine…but cb’s don’t grow on trees, rb’s do
I am not so sure Merriman is written off out of town; just a guess mind you, I am thinking they want to see what they really have, a gimped LB or one making a rebound
LT isn't going to fit in any offense as a starter
At least not successfully. I think a decreased role is the only thing that will keep him in the league. As far as the Chargers not being dependent on the run, I beg to differ. You need the run to set up the pass. The main reason Norv ran a pass first offense last year was because LT wasn’t getting the job done rushing the ball on first and second down. At least thats my assumption based on the fact that LT didn’t do much with the Carries he got and really didn’t have more than 1 or 2 long runs.
As far as Jamall goes, not every player is just willing to have their contract redone like LT did last season. The Chargers definitely wanted to keep him, just not for 5 mil/year. They did the only thing they could do which was cut him and let him test the waters as a FA. Obviously Denver has a lot more faith that Jamall can stay healthy than the Chargers do and JWall did what most people would do and took the money.
On Merriman, I highly doubt any team would be willing to give up a first and third for him and the Chargers would most likely not accept anything less just in case he returns to his previous form. My guess is that Sproles might actually be the one to leave town but it would be for less than a first and third.

Let's see where we are after the draft.
My only worry is the d-line. But yeah, this team could go either way.
