Around SBN: MLB Trade Rumors: Edwin Jackson to the White Sox, DC next?

According NFL.com's Steve Wyche Charlie Clipboard is just trying to decided whether he wants to go to the Seahawks or Cardinals. Once he signs an offer sheet the Chargers have 7 days to match, but they probably won't. Not matching would result in a 3rd round pick from the Cardinals or some other sort of compensation from the Seahawks (they don't have a 3rd round pick).

Clipboard Jesus

sign with the Cardinals please. I think we’d all love to have the 88th pick. AJ Smith, sign Brandon Marshall, then trade his @$$ to Seattle for the 14th pick. That is all.

by Natrone Bomb on Mar 14, 2010 12:10 PM PDT reply actions

Hold on now

The Seattle pick has to be worth more, right? Even though it doesn’t belong to Seattle?

There must be something in the rules that states what happens in a situation like this. It seems like basic fairness requires Seattle give us something better than a 3rd rounder since they can’t give us that.

You didn't follow the link did you?

The Chargers and Seahawks have worked out at agreement over what the compensation for Whitehurst would be. It doesn’t say what that agreement is though.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

As Wyche points out, the Seahawks don’t have a third-round pick in the 2010 draft. But the Seahawks and the Chargers already have discussed other compensation that the Chargers deem acceptable.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/14/whitehurst-has-two-offers-to-ponder/

I’d Imagine the compensation that has been talked about is Seattle’s pick in the 4th, #101 overall.

by Natrone Bomb on Mar 14, 2010 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I doubt AJ is that dumb

Why should he settle for only a pick a round lower when he has all the leverage?

Even if they get that 4th round pick, I doubt that would be it. Perhaps another lower round pick in this draft or the future, or maybe a player.

by CABurrito on Mar 14, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Arizona's 3rd round pick

is only 13 spots ahead of Seattle’s 4th round pick. I think there might be a couple comp picks awarded at the end of the third though. What’s the difference of value between #88 vs #101?

by Natrone Bomb on Mar 14, 2010 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Almost nothing

My guess is a late round 2011 pick is involved.

by AirNorval on Mar 14, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

54 points

Based on the chart.

The real issue here is the value they should have gotten, which was the Seahawk’s original 3rd rounder. That was pick # 69, which is a lot higher than either 88 or 101. Why would AJ just say “sure, we’ll gladly take a pick a round lower than what we are entitiled to”? At least in light of Arizona’s interest.

If it were just the Seahawks who made Whitehurst an offer I could understand them being more flexible, because then its a 4th or nothing.

by CABurrito on Mar 14, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

We are not trading him

Apparently compensation equal to a third has already been discussed with the Hawks. My guess is their 4th and next years 3rd or 4th and 5th.

I really dont care at this point I cant believe we are going to get any decent compensation for him anyway. I just want the trigger pulled already.

by AirNorval on Mar 14, 2010 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I could accept that. A 4th plus a future mid rounder seems fair given what we should have gotten per the rules of the CBA.

by CABurrito on Mar 14, 2010 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah problem is the Chargers cant choose what tender Whitehurst decides to sign. They can only choose to match or not. My guess considering Whitehurst’s hair style is he’ll choose Seattle for the better weather and weed.

by AirNorval on Mar 14, 2010 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s not entirely true. They could have rejected whatever alternative compensation Seattle is offering, which would have meant that Seattle couldn’t offer him a contract.

But you are right, his hair situation makes him well suited for the Northwest.

by CABurrito on Mar 14, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

exactly

which makes me think seatle will have to pay more than the value of Az’s 3rd pick for SD to consider any kind of compensation.

by Steve (Grey Suit) on Mar 14, 2010 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Per Acee’s mailbag, if Charlie chooses Seattle the deal could involve a switch of picks, possibly first round picks.

Not gonna get too excited but that would be great if there’s any truth to it. Come on Charlie, do the right thing!

by CABurrito on Mar 14, 2010 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitly wouldnt be a switch in 1st rounds… probably second rounds if anything… but i still couldnt see that happening.

I will be happy with a 4th and conditional pick next year… but on the other hand, im sad to see jesus leave us.

I wonder if they will require him to get a hair cut before he signs. Hopefully the Chargers move him quickly before AZ changes its mind.

by AirNorval on Mar 14, 2010 1:11 PM PDT reply actions

Compensation from Seattle

Acee speculates in some of his latest mailbag Q&A that the compensation could involved swapping first round pick. Not necessarily a straight swap for Whitehurst, but that it would be part of the compensation package.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

by StrangeBroP25 on Mar 14, 2010 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously.

That pick could bump us into CJ Spiller, or Dan Williams territory. At the least, that would assure us Ryan Mathews.

by CaDuck on Mar 14, 2010 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

That would not be the entirity of it.

I’m guessing the Chargers would need to do something else to sweeten the pot. Like a 2011 pick or something.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 14, 2010 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounds like the Bolts want

Williams or Spiller.

Weren’t the Seahawks interested in Sproles as well? Maybe the Bolts will send Clipboard Chuck, Sproles and the #28 pick to seattle for the #14 pick.

by Steve (Grey Suit) on Mar 14, 2010 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Could be

but that would definitely tip the hand towards signing Spiller, because you don’t get rid of the last proven back on your roster if you don’t intend to draft the best one on the board. We’d probably try and wrangle Justin Forsett in return.

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

by StrangeBroP25 on Mar 14, 2010 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

In that case, how would you propose addressing the RB position?

Picture, if you will, a nightmarish scenario where the only running back on our roster is Marcus Mason (count Jacob Hester if you like; I won’t). Do you draft two backs? Draft one, or none? If you DO draft a back, what kind? A speedster, or a bruiser? And who’s out there waiting to be signed?

I think it would be a terrible boner to NOT pick Spiller in that scenario (he’s on the board and we’ve got #14 at the expense of Chuck, #28, and Sproles).

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

by StrangeBroP25 on Mar 14, 2010 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Im NOT worried about RB w/ or w/out Sproles

Its an overrated position to begin with. Would be ecstatic to see us get to #14 overall, its likely Earl Tomas, Hayden, or Dwill would be there.

by AirNorval on Mar 14, 2010 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions

If the Chargers have the #14 pick

and the best NT and best RB are still on the board, they’re not drafting a corner.

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

by StrangeBroP25 on Mar 14, 2010 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Haden will not be there.

I’m personally not a huge fan of Earl Thomas, I think we would be much better served drafting a RB/NT

This off-season officially sucks for SEVEN(!!!!!!!) reasons and counting...

by CaDuck on Mar 14, 2010 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

There is alot of value at RB in the second round.

Also the Chargers were 31st in rushing last season only to be out done by the AFC champion Colts. They can easily get a serviceable back in the second round that can give them just enough production to make their offence work. However 3-4 nose tackles are incredibly hard to find so if you are in need of one and one is available to you, you take him and figure out your other positional needs later. But Like I said earlier it’s a moot point since Williams will most likely not be there at 14.

Cool.

We get a good round draft choice for our designated clipboard driver.

As a Cardinals fan

I hope we don’t give up a 3rd round pick for this guy when Brady Quinn just went for a 7th rounder and a couple of other scrub picks.

For a third rounder? Blasphemy!

AJ is certainly going to hell; or maybe that explains our loss to the Jets. A bit of preemptive purgatory.

about 7 hours ago via web

So I head on over to SignOnSanDiego to see what Acee has for us.
I am also hearing that there is interest in some of the Chargers’ first-and-third tender players, particularly Shawne Merriman. Whether that means teams are willing to part with a first- and third-round draft pick is not known, but according to numerous sources, there are several teams discussing going after Merriman and Vincent Jackson.

So who is it going to be? Sproles? Merriman? Jackson?

by Natrone Bomb on Mar 14, 2010 6:24 PM PDT reply actions

My money would be on Jackson. Proven performer who isn’t coming off injury.

Sproles would likely be too expensive when you add up the money and the first and thirds. Although I suppose they could work out a trade for lesser compensation, which is what Acee had been hinting at for a while now.

by CABurrito on Mar 14, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Jackson on his own is worth more than the unknown #14.

that was postulated a month or two ago? Jackson could buy us the world if we play ou cards right…

besides which, TO is still out there.

If we were to get an additional first rounder and another third rounder, we would surely be able to address our needs.

My guess involving Jackson and Clip board, and Seattle.

by Foilhat on Mar 14, 2010 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

So you predict that both Jackson and Clipboard end up in Seattle?

That would lead to some craziness in terms of draft picks.

by CaDuck on Mar 14, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope Im wrong but yes thats my prediction

Considering the interest the Hawks have shown clip board and BMarsh; I figure maybe they realize Vjack is better and it makes sense for them make a play for both players. If they were really wanting to land the clip board and collect a beast receiver, and keep him away from their division rival. They could kill two birds with one stone; or three birds I guess.

by TritonEye on Mar 14, 2010 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions

If a team gives up a first and a third for Merriman that would be a big step forward into re-stocking the Cupboard

if a team goes after Jackson that means that the Chargers are going to have to match what ever offer he gets.

And before Airnorval responds about poison pills and what not, I’m sure if the Chargers offer jackson an equivelent contract to whatever is on the other teams offersheet without a poison pill and posibibly a bit more compinsation then he will sign it.

by Steve (Grey Suit) on Mar 14, 2010 8:50 PM PDT reply actions

I could see swapping 2nd round picks with Seattle.

The value there is pretty equal to #5 in the 3rd round.

by SJO on Mar 15, 2010 12:22 PM PDT reply actions

It's quite possible

That is what it could be. I could see how the Chargers would be interested in that.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 15, 2010 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm....

While i’m all for giving up Whitehurst i’m not sure about giving up Merriman or VJ without getting something established in return.

Our window of contention isn’t gonna be forever and we may not have time for certain first round picks to develop.

For example take Larry English, last year’s first rounder at #16 pick, he’s not ready to start, especially if you consider that Lights Out will likely be better next season as he has the whole summer to get ready. Even last season Shawne was a difference maker in that he commanded attention from the opposing O-line..

And giving up Vinnie? Please no, he has a great connection with Rivers and his height makes him and Floyd and Gates a great combination.

by LT_21 on Mar 15, 2010 2:07 PM PDT reply actions

You could easily argue that last season Merriman was no better than English.

Because he really wasn’t. There is no guarantee that Merriman will accomplish anything this season. I would be more than happy to use a first round pick in return for Merriman to fill the void at DT.

This off-season officially sucks for SEVEN(!!!!!!!) reasons and counting...
