Holy crap, what an undertaking this is. Mocking the Draft is using representatives from each team's community (the Chargers' rep is Wonko) and doing a SEVEN ROUND LIVE MOCK DRAFT.

So far, no Chargers picks have been made, but this is already turning into one of the more fun threads of the offseason.

Holy Crap

I got screwed. There are only 3 NTs who I think could potentially start in 2010, one went before my 1st round pick and the other two went before my second round pick.

I am happy with Ryan Matthews in the first round and I got great value for Kareem Jackson in the second, but the NT position basically gets the shaft,

Does this mean that the Chargers should reach for Terrence Cody or Cam Thomas in the first since there will obviously be some capable running backs left in the second? I would have loved to trade down in the first and get some extra picks, but trades weren’t that easy. If somehow the Chargers could trade down a little and still get Matthews and then use those picks they acquired to move up in the second and take Cody or Thomas, that would be ideal. I just couldn’t make it happen.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

They were only difficult because you weren’t talking to the moron who flushed his franchise.

If a team either signs Chuck White

or AJ somehow trades sproles and gets some kind of value for him (which AJ will do or he prob won’t trade him) then the Chargers should have the extra pick to use to move up in the 2nd round and get Cody. If neither happens then AJ can always trade the Chargers 2nd round pick next year since they should be getting one from the Jets.

by Steve (Grey Suit) on Mar 13, 2010 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

Trading down is overrated

I think you should have taken Kyle Wilson at #28, but this draft is pretty deep in the secondary; so I dont mind passing on a corner. And I think you did get good value with Kareem Jackson at the bottom of the 2nd.

With the board you had it was either a CB or a RB, it seemed pretty cut and dry; but you were right to pass on Cody and Thomas in the first. It keeps looking like passing on a 1st round RB is the right play this year.

The way I see it this year. Is we have two choices regarding the NT issue. We either trade up into the 2nd (possibly use our 2nd or 3rd next year) or we dont take one until a late round. And hope for the best.

For some crazy reason I think we wont take a NT until the 4th round tops. There are too many good DBs and RBs early in this draft.

If the Chargers use their 1st round pick on a CB, I’ll kick a hole through my television.

Funny how you’re the only person who thinks that.

And take Ben Tate

If he falls to you in the 3rd. Two rookie backs that good would set us up for years to come.

by AirNorval on Mar 13, 2010 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

I am not taking two RBs

Not without knowing if Sproles will be traded. Fortunately for the Chargers they will know that by the time of the real draft.

If I did draft a second RB, it would be someone who could also return kicks and not Ben Tate.

At least take a late round back

We do need to draft two even if we keep Sproles I would think.

by AirNorval on Mar 13, 2010 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

Hi Wonko, I just posted a fanpot regarding this, but I’m wondering, seeing as how your mock draft went, would you change up your strategy and pick Cody or Thomas in the first instead of Matthews? Or would you still pick Matthews first and hope a NT falls to you in the second?

by random122 on Mar 13, 2010 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

I think

The real problem was that the Broncos kind of messed up the NT pecking order when they drafted Dan Williams in the first even though they just spent big bucks on Jamal Williams. If they had gone elsewhere, Williams could have gone to Miami, the Chiefs could have picked Cody and Thomas could have been there. However, that means that the Bills have to pass, which I’m not sure the real Bills would. The guy in this mock basically telegraphed that his priorities were on offense, but I don’t know if the Bills FO will feel the same.

Yeah

I was thinking maybe that second rounder from the jets could be used to trade up this year and grab a NT. It would be better though if we could use the third from Chuck.

We don't have a second rounder from the Jets

We have a 3rd round pick currently, with a stipulation that it could become at 2nd rounder.

by TritonEye on Mar 13, 2010 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

Seems to me we have two options to land a NT like Cody or Thomas. Either reach in the first or trade up into the 2nd for whichever one falls.
Problem is you need a parter to trade.
I dont think we will excersise either option ; but those seem like the options. If I had to pick one I guess we should reach for Cody in the late first, but I hate that idea.

by AirNorval on Mar 13, 2010 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

There are a few ways we could go here, seems like all of the good DT's are off the board.

No Price, Williams, etc…

Ryan Mathews perhaps?

This off-season officially sucks for SEVEN(!!!!!!!) reasons and counting...

by CaDuck on Mar 13, 2010 5:57 PM PST reply actions

FYI

Someone pointed out that Price would be the shortest 3-4 DE in the NFL. There’s probably a reason why they are all 6’3 and taller. He also struggles against double teams. He’s just not a good fit for the Chargers defense, even if he was on the board for them.

Raiders drafting Trent Williams?

Yeah right! The Al Davis is incredibly insane factor was clearly not accounted for. I say they go for Pierre Paul.

The whole thing was over by the time I got around to looking at it (which took me a little while to figure out. Times like these I wish SBNation had a delete comment button), so I didn’t look through the comments.

Are you using Firefox?

I heard a report earlier tonight that some people were seeing the site weird in Firefox. Either switch to a different browser for the time being, or wait it out. These issues usually get fixed quickly.

AJ has a tough job

these are all tough decisions and I’m glad I don’t have to make them.

I, for one

would not be displeased either by Torrell Troup or a good ILB (Pat Angerer, Sean Lee) in round 3 or 4.

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

by StrangeBroP25 on Mar 14, 2010 8:30 AM PST reply actions

Other NTs

I’m thinking it may take a year or so to get a guy like Troup (or any other NT prospect) ready to play NT. I don’t think he will be an upgrade on Nwagbuo or Scott for a while.

Sean Lee is definitely high on my BPA list, but the Chargers don’t really have an opening at ILB unless Dobbins signs elsewhere. However, I guess that’s true of most of the positions after drafting a RB and a CB. I don’t want to telegraph what I’m going to do in case there are spies here, but I have some ideas for our third round pick.

I wonder if Charlie Clipboard signs with Arizona if we’ll add another 3rd round Chargers pick to the mock. I would hope so. Too bad it’s too late to use it in a trade.

The only problem with Lee is that he has never been able to stay healthy.

Other than that, he played well for good ol’ JoePa.

by CaDuck on Mar 14, 2010 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Serious disadvantage

picking late, our 1st is more like a early 2nd. To get a player you target youve got to overdraft. If you want Cam Thomas, you’ve got to take him in the 1st. If you want Torrell Troup, youve got to take him in the second. Id take a NT this draft over a RB because this class is so strong. Take a RB in the 3rd. Use Sproles and Tolbert/Hester as stopgaps. Then take a RB in the 1st next year. So I’d go NT/CB/RB or CB/NT/RB. We just got too many holes to fill and not enough draft picks. TE,DE is another area of importance. Rivers got killed on the play Manu missed his block, don’t want to watch replays in 2010. Probably would rate TE as more critical than our pathetic DE’s since our team’s success is entirely dependant on River’s health.

I am interested in...

Deji karim from southern Illinois and linval Joseph from east carolina. I don’t know if they are any good. Can’t find much YouTube video and they are small school guys, but they have decent stats and crazy good physical measurables.

Linval Joseph is a beast

I’d like to see how he measures up, if only as a probie in TC.
