San Diego Chargers Sign CB Donald Strickland

via Adam Schefter's Twitter:

Filed to ESPN: CB Donald Strickland reached agreement with the Chargers on a two-year deal.

Guess Wonko was wrong. The Chargers fill their nickel CB hole with Donald Strickland.  Stickland is 29 years old and has bounced around his entire career.  He's somewhat small (5'10", 185lbs.) and is more of a cover corner than anything else.

From what I've personally seen of Donald, he's a perfect fit for the Chargers.  He has been consistent enough that teams have tried to make him a starter in the past, with poor results.  However, as a nickel CB he's probably better than Steve Gregory.

UPDATE: SBNation has Strickland's stats from 2009.

Looks like Strickland isn’t afraid of a little bit of contact

His numbers should be inflated like that

Probably reflects him playing nickel corner and STs.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

How am I wrong

To quote myself:

Basically, this almost assures that the Chargers will either spend a 3rd round draft pick or higher on the position or try to address it through free agency.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

For the purposes of this article, let’s assume they will address it with a 3rd round pick or higher.

The assumption for the purposes of your post was an incorrect one. I am not saying something you actually believed in was wrong.

They still will

This guy might even not make it through training camp, he so fragile.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

He’s missed an average of 4 games per season over the last 3 years. That’s not far from the average for an NFL CB.

by John Gennaro on Mar 12, 2010 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

And over his career he’s played in less than half the games. Been on IR three times and had multiple concussions last year.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

I still think we take a CB early

3rd or higher.

Strickland is a stop-gap at best.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 12, 2010 2:36 PM PST reply actions

I don't see it

Starters: Jammer, Cason
Nickel & Dime: Gregory, Strickland, Hughes, Castille

That’s 4 guys, 2 of which the team is quite high one (and they may not even be the two that win the spots, because Gregory could always slide back to S). If they want to get a project CB to play nickel in 2011 or 2012, they’re going to have to get him much later in the draft so that they can put him on the practice squad without somebody else stealing him away.

We can disagree then

Gregory, Strickland, Hughes, and Castille

Cause we I see those names above my brain goes.

NB/S/ST, concussed, ?, scrub

Not one of those names says 3rd CB to me

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

It seems to me

That it’s adequate enough where if we get to third round we don’t have to say, “Oh crap, we have to draft a CB to fill out our roster since we haven’t drafted one already”, however it doesn’t preclude us from seeing a CB we like in one of the upper rounds and taking him.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

I still think if we get to the 3rd and havent draft one

We should be saying “oh crap”. Corner is a elite position. We dont even know if Cason is a starter yet so imo we need someone to compete with him as well. But no one is saying that, they just assume he’s a lock.

Adding one guy thats had has spend 3 seasons out of 6 on IR, had more than 3 concussions like last year doesnt mean we suddenly dont need to draft a corner high.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

Well

We must have signed him for a reason, I don’t think A.J. was just trying to be nice.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 12, 2010 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Yea we signed him

to compete. Just like any other scrub we sign. I figure he could push for nickel time, he could play STs, he could round out the roster as the 4th corner or 9th DB. He could also get blasted in game one receiving a fourth concussion, and be done.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

How does this scrub corner change our drafting plans?

HAHA

This guys presence didnt shift the board even an iota; we will still take a DB in the first three rounds. He should be in competition for the 4th CB, since not only do we need a 3rd corner; but we also need a 4th.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 2:44 PM PST reply actions

As stated above

You can’t pretend that Gregory, Hughes and Castille don’t exist. The team is very high on Hughes, and I expect him to be the 4th CB (in-training for the nickel spot). Gregory will definitely be on the roster for his versatility. Where is there room for a 3rd round or higher CB on this roster?

Hughes is not a sure thing

His knee injury could keep him from being 100% in training camp. If that’s the case, there is no way he earns a spot on the roster. I don’t think the team can assume that he’ll be ready or capable of roster spot worthiness. The same can be said of Castille, minus the injury.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

by Wonko on Mar 12, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

i felt like his injury was a little contrived

just to get him onto IR rather than trying to get him onto the practice squad. There was no way he was going to make the 53 man, especially since they had their heart set on 3 CBs.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 12, 2010 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

That was pretty obvious

It happened with that big TE we had like back in 07 too.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

Well

He was a 4th round pick (and not a reach), he got hurt and then never made it in the NFL. Seems to me the injury was important.

He was put on IR

Because the team didnt want to cut him allegedly. So he was “hurt” in like the preseason game.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

Nope

He had a serious toe injury. Then they signed Kris Wilson to replace him.

You're the one with the conspiracy theory here buddy

not me.

There’s video of Chandler getting his toe crushed by defensive lineman in a preseason game somewhere. I’m sure of it.

Is it so hard to believe that a player for the Chargers in 2008 had a serious toe issue? That was the team with the toe epidemic.

Maybe he did injured

But I choose to believe he was stashed on IR for the sake of practicality for a number of reasons, that although dont prove it true; all point me to lead to that conclusion.

I can find multiple articles

Where Norv is quoted as calling his knee injury “serious” or “significant.” I guess that could be part of the contriving the injury. He did avoid surgery on it.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 12, 2010 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

I’m just saying that if he doesn’t make the team, it will be because he sucks and not because he hasn’t recovered from an injury in training camp the year before. But it also bodes well for him that they wanted to keep him around enough to put him on IR and not risk losing him when trying to get him through waivers and on to the practice squad.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 12, 2010 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

The Scott Chandler “injury”, was way too obvious; they did a better job with this one.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

Yes I can easily pretend like they dont exsist

I not hard to do.

I dont care how high you say they are on Hughes frankly because you say the team is high on every scrub.
Gregory is a stud yeah, but he’s not a corner. He’s a safety, or nickel back; and a STs player.

Im not even going to mention Castille or Strickland its possible both arent even on the roster in 2010.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

i think your wrong about Hughes John

I remember even before he got injured Acee was reporting that he might not even make the team and the team was disappointed in what they got from him.

maybe they are all talking about the other Hughes. You know, the one who actually made the team.

by BORTZ on Mar 12, 2010 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

Im starting to like the pickup though

Only problem this guy has is his injuries, including way too many concussions.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 2:48 PM PST reply actions

Welcome Donald

Never heard of this guy, but I hope he can contribute on the roster.

From the scouting report I just read, he seems like the anti-Cromartie: Average athlete, more suited at a nickle or slot man, better in off coverage than bump and run/man, and isn’t afraid to stick his nose in and make a tackle in run support.

I guess we’ll see which player fits us better.

by CABurrito on Mar 12, 2010 2:53 PM PST reply actions

From RotoWolrd dot com

Chargers signed CB Donald Strickland to a two-year contract.
Oft-injured, Strickland has never played a full 16-game schedule in his career. The 29-year-old also hasn’t picked off a pass since 2003. However, he fills a major void in San Diego as a nickel back. The Bolts remain likely to use an early- to mid-round draft pick on a corner to groom for the future.

http://www.rotoworld.com/Content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=1554

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 3:53 PM PST reply actions

Ack, he doesn't really fit a void at NB

Cause I love the presence of Gregory in the WWS position.
By WWS, I mean weak weak safety, which I guess you could call nickelback.
But this is a depth move, this adds another player who is a proven
nickelback while adding a guy who has the physical attributes to play
the cornerback position. I like this move, more guys = better competition in the secondary.
I think we are a far distance from Cletis Gordon pushing Drayton Florence at CB… and that makes me happy.

by riversformvp on Mar 12, 2010 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

It's a void

He’s a nickelback.
He’s now on the roster.
How is that not now filled?
It may not be filled to our liking, but the void no longer exists.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 12, 2010 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

He fills the void at backup CB

Not at NB. So now we don’t NEED to draft a CB in the first 3 rounds.
Right???

by riversformvp on Mar 12, 2010 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

Oh

You’re saying we don’t have a major void at NB. Got it.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on Mar 12, 2010 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

Yup, although we still have a gaping hole at CB

Which is why we will draft someone to backup both Jammer/Cason. Hughes and Castille are pratice squad and pre-season players. If Hughes has a rough camp/pre-season we’ll cut him.

by SJO on Mar 12, 2010 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

Im not sure this guy fills any void

Besides maybe the void for scrub bodies needed to compete in TC for the 4th CB or 9th DB roster spot.

Question...

Who in the NFL don’t they have a picture of sacking Marc Bulger?

by Blueblood27 on Mar 12, 2010 4:26 PM PST reply actions

Good question

They keep missing on offensive linemen it seems.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 6:26 PM PST up reply actions

I guess...

AJ’s plan is to bring in capable backups for his up and coming players he thinks are starter worthy. If his plan is pushing us toward the ultimate goal of bringing a Championship to SD,then I’ll support him. This is also looking forward as well to keeping the team in SD long term, and what better way to keep them here?By building a SB caliber team and actually winning one.So here’s to us making great personnel decisions and hopefully bringing a Lombardi trophy in the coming years to San Diego and the Chargers.

I’m not the staunchest supporter of AJ’s picks or FA signings, but I gotta roll with the punches and with my team.WIN,LOSE OR DRAW,WHO’S WITH ME?!?William Wallace voice!!!

by Gorditoe1 on Mar 12, 2010 4:31 PM PST reply actions

I agree

the Wallace voice was abit off key; but this move was about layering some depth and competition. No guarantees what you get in the draft

by bo_shilo on Mar 13, 2010 9:24 AM PST up reply actions

At least they freakin' did SOMETHING

I was beginning to get… worried? angry? Not sure what I was beginning to get.

I sometimes get the feeling that AJ is reluctant to make moves because he thinks that by signing a FA for a particular position, he’s admitting to the football world that the team is weak at that position. And AJ doesn’t strike me as a type of guy who EVER likes to admit weakness.
