To New Orleans

No city and group of fans deserve this more. Congratulations, and enjoy your month of non-stop partying.

As a Chargers fan, this is a bitter pill to swallow. Fair or not, if Philip Rivers doesn’t win a ring, we’ll be as tired of hearing about Eli, Drew, and Ben as we are tired of hearing about Ryan Leaf.

Im happy for drew brees

He is a class act, i just don’t know if we keep him on this team after the year he had when we drafted rivers.

Nothing against Rivers

I love Rivers, and wouldn’t want anyone else under center.

I’m just pointing out my bitterness over Drew Brees joining a list that includes Lance Alworth, Fred Dean, Louie Kelcher, Gary Johnson, Gary Plummer, and Rodney Harrison.

What are you talking about??

The year his contract expired, Drew had major shoulder surgery on his throwing arm and he was coming off a season in which he was good but not spectacular (2004 was a fabulous year, 2005 was fairly average). Meanwhile, we had a first-round QB that had been waiting in the wings for two years.

Drew was an unrestricted free agent so we offered him a deal that was appropriate for a QB of his caliber coming off a career-threatening injury. But the Saints were willing to take the risk and offer much more guaranteed money so he turned down our deal and walked.

Given the circumstances, I don’t think he was treated unjustly by our FO and I don’t think we can blame AJ for anything.

by cowbell on Feb 7, 2010 7:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And that's not anything against Drew

He’s a great player and a great guy who I have the utmost respect for. But his win today DOES NOT reflect poorly on AJ because I think AJ took the reasonable course of action.

Besides, I think both teams came out better for it. Drew’s had some amazing years in New Orleans and has given so much to their community. And Philip’s playing better than I could have ever imagined.

I am not hating on our GM!!!

Stop putting words in my mouth. At no point have I mentioned A.J. Smith, much less hated on his decision – I understood the decision to let Brees go then, and I still think it was the right call.

This is a long-term frustration as a Chargers’ fan. All of the guys I mentioned above were great players who did not win their rings wearing our uniform. Some were let go due to bad decisions – BTW, I am fully aware that none of those players (except Brees under terrible circumstances) were let go by A.J. Smith – others made the most of opportunities elsewhere.

I think SD is fine with our decision. We’re happy for Brees but most people i know would rather have Rivers.

Congratulations New Orleans Saints and Beautiful People from New Orleans

I watched the game with my family, and I prayed the whole time that the Saints would win. What a stupendous game. Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints and their Louisiana family. It couldn’t have been any other way. We here in New MexicoI love those Saints.

One other thing...

The onside kick call by Payton was, hands down, the best calculated risk I’ve seen a coach take in a big game. Totally changed the game. That was brass.

Sort of a different scenario

The onside kick was a basically a ploy to attempt to keep the ball away from Peyton Manning and the offense. You can try and sum it up as a “They wanted to win more” sort of anecdote, but its simply game strategy. It’s the sort of game strategy that really wouldn’t have come up in the Chargers-Jets game. I for one think the best strategy for Chargers in the Jets game and the Colts in Super Bowl would be to play the way that had been playing the whole year. For the Chargers that meant that they didn’t execute that strategy and lost. For the Colts, they did execute it and still lost. I would argue though, that the Colts would have made themselves less likely to win if they had attempted a different strategy, which by that logic would make both teams playing to win equally as much. But, when both teams play to win equally as well, one team will still lose.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Strange how similar this game was to early NE/Indy games. It seemed like the refs didn’t want to get involved, and as soon as New Orleans realized it they started beating up the Colts’ WRs at the line of scrimmage. Also, when they realized that the Colts DBs wanted no part in the same game, they just started throwing 4-5 yard passes on every play.

I'm so excited for Drew

And I thought it was a really good game.

And for those keeping count. Purdue now has 3 QBs (Griese, Dawson, Brees) who have started for Super Bowl winners. That ties them with Alabama (Starr, Namath, Stabler). Take that Stanford (Plunkett and Elway), Notre Dame (Theismann and Montana) and BYU (Young and McMahon)!

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Congrats to Drew and the Saints

So happy for Drew, he’s a total class act. I lost what little respect I had for Peyton as I saw his back jogging off the field when time ran out, he didnt bother to congratulate Drew or anyone else, it was a total Eli move.

by skberry64 on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

maybe Eli was doing a total Peyton move....wdksjhfkshfsdlfh

But I thought his explanation was legit. He said he’s been there before and knows how much hoopla there is right at the end of the game and he was going to let them do their thing. You know he’s going to congratulate all of them.

Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

people will stop using past championships as indicators of potential to win future championships.
