Serious Business: 2/3 Chargers Links
Where in the AFC West would Peppers fit? - Bill Williamson - ESPN
San Diego: The Chargers do not have a recent history of pursuing big-ticket free agents and the team has a lot of pass rushers. Larry English was drafted last year in case Shawne Merriman leaves. Peppers would flourish if he were to end up in San Diego, but a lot would have to happen for that scenario to play out.
Porter erupts, already eyeing new teams - Tim Graham - ESPN
Porter was a guest Tuesday afternoon on Miami sports radio station WQAM here on Radio Row and went on what amounted to a 25-minute rant against the team and even listed three teams he wants to play for in 2010: the San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.
Stat of the Day: Quarterback Hurries
No Chargers defenders in the top 20.
Adjusted Comeback Efficiency
The purpose of the Adjusted Comeback Efficiency (ACE) Rating is to provide a comprehensive figure for measuring a quarterback’s performance in potential game-winning or game-tying situations.
Critical Part Of Chargers’ Financing Deal Out of Play - San Diego Business Journal Online
"We would have gotten $100 million under the old program," Fabiani said. "It’s a critical thing, and if we don’t get it replenished, it would be tough to get anything done downtown."
Ravens plan should include deal for Floyd - baltimoresun.com
If Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome is smart, he should be preparing a tender for Floyd when the free-agent period opens on March 5, or asking the Chargers about a trade.

That Baltimore Sun article makes a great point. Floyd is one of the top WRs that actually may be available for a reasonable price and doesn’t have a bad track-record of off-the-field problems. I could see somebody offering the Chargers something like a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him. At his age (28), and with guys like Legedu Naanee and Buster Davis nipping at his heels, it would be hard to turn that down.

I think the lack of off the field problems
will be the thing that keeps Floyd around. VJ, for all his talent, is a little worrisome off the field (not TO/Brandon Marshall worrisome, but still a little worrisome). The more I think about it, the more I think we’re going to keep the WR corps the same (minus Osgood and with Buster active every week). I could see Floyd getting a First Round tender and if someone makes an offer for him, the Bolts could still match it if it isn’t crazy.

Naanee and Buster have no off-field problems.
I don’t see the logic in keeping Malcom just because VJ can’t stay out of handcuffs. It’s not like the team will eventually sign Malcom (29 at the start of next season) to a long-term deal instead of VJ (27 at the start of next season).

If you let Malcom go
and VJ gets suspended and/or finds himself getting harassed by The Man again, we could be down to starting Naanee and Buster. Letting Malcom go puts some additional risk into our lineup next year. I love Naanee and I think Buster has potential, but I’m not real comfortable with them as my starters. So Malcom stays (I suspect).

Agreed, but in that case you’re keeping Floyd around for his talent….not because he doesn’t have off-the-field issues. That was my point

Do you see the logic in keeping Malcom just because it would mean we’d have three starting receivers at or about 6’23"?

Buster Davis nipping at his heels
Is that what you call it. Buster may be a player some day, but I have not seen much nipping yet.
You didn’t see the one game Buster was active for this season, did you?

I did and I think
“the one game Buster was active for this season” part says it all. He had a couple nice plays in a garbage game, but I am not ready to start working on a Bust for Busters trip to the Hall yet.
I was not on the Malcom band wagon before this season began (and was wrong not to be), I think it would be a big mistake to let him go as I am not sold on the Charger’s “depth” at the WR position.
I don’t think Buster sat due to a lack of talent. I think he sat to get healthy. His problem has never been with skill, as he’s produced when he’s on the field (seriously, go look through his stats). His problem has been staying healthy. Hopefully that’s behind him now.

I hope that your right
He has been hurt a lot, but I don’t think they are that comfortable with him on the field either. I think some of his inactives this year were by coaches choice rather than injury. I have no doubt that he is skilled, most WRs drafted on the first day are, sadly that does not always translate into production on the field.
Not a ton of stats to look through on him. A small part of the offense one year, and then nothing for two years. So far he is Osgood minus the special teams.
I am all for him staying healthy and becoming a big part of the offense, but I am not going to hold my breath.
Buster's inactives were mostly coach's choice AND injury.
Just not injury to Buster. How many guys can you activate? Ok, 45. But that includes a pair of badly battered lines and 4-5 WRs who couldn’t be deactivated.

Osgood minus the special teams? Ouch
The difference has already been stated. Osgood couldn’t get on the field because he doesn’t have very good hands. Buster gets on the field when he’s healthy. The coaches tell you which guys are good.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year
Assuming Osgood leaves and the rest of the WRs are the same, will buster be active? With Osgood gone, there is an active spot open. I know he doesn’t really do special teams in terms of coverage (does he return punts/kicks?) so he would have to really earn it based on his contribution to the offense. This year, I don’t think he was better than Nanee or Floyd or he would have been active.
Of course, if either VJ or Floyd leaves, we will definately see Buster.

Davis WILL be active if he's healthy.
There’s going to be a competition at returner, and Davis will almost certainly be the favorite. Also, if the lines don’t get beat to snot right out the gate again, they’ll probably carry one less active 300lb’er, because now they really know they can trust their backups at all positions on both lines, something they didn’t have last year until late.

That SDBJ article is a HUGE deal
Just when I was hopeful that a downtown stadium might be a possibility, it seems like it no longer is. Essentially what the Chargers need is a billionaire to finance at least part of the stadium on his own in exchange for part ownership of the team……which is exactly what L.A. offers. Crap.

Noooooooooooooooo!
I’m going to be absolutely crushed if the Chargers leave S.D. Not only that, but to maybe go to L.A.?!? Anywhere but there, please please please! I’ll be a Charger fan for life, but it will be a serious blow to my heart to have them become the dreaded L.A. Chargers again.
I’d rather them be in L.A. than somewhere across the country.

Me too.
Even if I move to that town. If there’s room for an NFL team somewhere else, then maybe the League should expand. My kind of fan living in Cleveland would be Ravens-haters, in Baltimore they’d have it in for Indy; were I from LA, I’d have a nice sense of schadenfreude about how bad the Rams suck these days, and I’d rue the name Kurt Warner. Teams get a window of 5-10 years (the Dallas Texans and LA Chargers don’t qualify; the LA Raiders are marginal on that count), and then they are where they are. The only atonement for the sin of departure is return.

Finally....
yes, I’m reading the articles one at a time and then commented back about each one…..
That FO article about the best Comeback QBs is awesome. Take that Brady (14th) and Brees (10th) lovers! When you need a game winning drive, the QBs you want are Rivers, Roethlisberger or one of the Manning brothers. Man, that 2004 QB class was amazing.

It was interesting though
That Brady’s low ranking is almost entirely due to his 2009 performance.
Did you notice that in 2003 Brees had barely any comeback opportunities compared to the rest of his career? Not sure what that means, but it caught my eye.

I like his play
but that interview tells me there could be some off-field issue’s with him that we aren’t fully in the loop about. If that’s the case there is no way in hell he would ever come here. Unlikely as that already is, that would finish the possibility.
Everyone knows Joey Porter is insane. However, when he ran onto the field to chest-bump Gartrell Johnson after a CSU touchdown in 2008….well, that’s just about my favorite football moment ever.

Joey Porter = epitomy of overrated
He can pass rush, but basically has one move, and disappears aside from that.
