A Few Tidbits of Chargers News

Seems some news is trickling out of the Chargers Front Office today as reported on Kevin Acee's Twitter Page:

  • I hear and expect the Chargers will put the first and third tender on WR Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd
  • Shawne Merriman will receive the first and third tender
  • Looks like Marcus McNeill is going to get the first and third also
  • Not a done deal, but I'm hearing Cromartie could be a Lion soon. Regardless, Cro has almost certainly played his last game for Chargers

I hope a deal with the Lions for Cro gets done soon.

This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...

I am very interested as to what the Lions are willing to give for Cro.

That is honestly the main reason I want this deal done, it will be interesting to see the leagues appraisal of Cro’s worth.

I’m betting on a high second plus a player. But I’m just speculating

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Feb 28, 2010 3:38 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

A high second would be huge.

Then we would have many more options with our first round pick. We could most certainly pick up a good back in the high second, or we could look at DT, and potentially defensive back.

Im guessing 4th hoping 3rd

Agreed.

I just can’t see anyone giving up much.

by BigRed61 on Feb 28, 2010 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

No

way a second, at best a third. Maybe a rb and a 5th.

by GABOLT on Mar 1, 2010 11:27 PM PST up reply actions

I don't get why the Lions are interested in Cro

He is only under contract for one season and not very likely to resign with them. Do the Lions think they can compete next year? Why would you give up a draft pick that may net you a player who will help you out for the next 4 years for a player who will help you in the short term when your team is still developing?

by Steve (Grey Suit) on Feb 28, 2010 4:40 PM PST reply actions

For the past couple of years, the Lions have had some of the worse pass defenses in the league.

Their pass defence is borderline historically bad at the moment and is one of the primary reasons they went 0-16. It wouldn’t surprise me that they would at least consider picking up a former Pro Bowl corner, even if it is for a year or two with a franchise tag.

I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

by DoubleViking on Feb 28, 2010 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

Typically

High profile guys are resigned when they are traded. If he would sign with the Chargers before he was traded or after it really doesnt matter. It happens all at the same time, so basically Cro and his agent would be negotiating a deal originating from the Lions.

by AirNorval on Feb 28, 2010 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't bet on much in return for Cro

Considering the fact the chargers are the one actively shopping him, and the general knowledge he’s a goner for the brass and the locker room. I’m hoping for a 3rd round pick, I wouldn’t be shocked by a 4-5 round pick in return. Anybody hoping for a second or a first will be sorely dissapointed.

by TJBOLT on Feb 28, 2010 5:23 PM PST reply actions

I'm betting

Someone will be willing to throw a 2nd for Cro

by NorthCountyBolt on Feb 28, 2010 5:39 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Hey I hope you're right

I wouldn’t put any money in it though, and if it is Detroit their second round pick is pick 34 just after the chargers first round pick, that would be awesome. Hoping not holding my breath on it.

Their third rounder sounds just about right considering the value of the player and that he only has one year left on his contract. But the image of Cro giving up on a key play, and getting market value is a difficult sell.

all of the above...

….is very good news in Chargerville.
To Antonio “the Tin Man” Cromartie: sayonara weenieboy! I would say don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out but we all know how easy it is for you to get out of the way when something is about to hit you. All the best in your search for a heart and a condom dispensary!

this sounds familiar

you remember when AJ said he would be putting players on notice? i wonder if this is what he meant? players not living up to expectations would simply be, replaced. going to be interesting.

The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

by gatesoftds on Feb 28, 2010 6:51 PM PST reply actions

Players not living up to expectations are always going to be replaced, regardless of what team they're on.

This is about getting something out of a player that has currently disappointed but is still worth some value. This is also about moving a player that’s being payed first round money out of the backup spot and moving into the starting lineup (i.e. Cason).

I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

by DoubleViking on Feb 28, 2010 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

what about buffalo?

word is that the bills are shopping marshawn lynch. one headcase for another? i dunno bout you guys but i would love to get “beast mode” grinding it out with rivers and that pass attack. think Edgerrin James circa 2003-2007. comparatively, these two players project equitable talent level, youth, and personal (legal) issues, thus having even trade value. pair that with a dynamic homerun hitter in the 1st/t2nd round like USC RB joe mcknight and u have an offense well equipped for the post-season. I wouldn’t mind replacing marshawn lynch with thomas jones easily…

cro is softer than fur

Tired of cro playing so soft, he is a great athlete but he plays 10yds off his cover every time.. I am stoked this idiot might be gone.. I don’t think he is worth a 1st, but who knows the lions are in absolute distress right now and they might take what they can get!

by boltpride on Mar 1, 2010 6:58 AM PST via mobile reply actions

10yds off his cover every time

That’s what the defense asked him to do. Judging by his comments about it, he doesn’t like playing that way anymore than you like seeing it. The Chargers play soft zones, try not to get beat deep and hope the pass rush gets there. That’s not going to change even they jettison Cromartie.

Acee reported a few times

that Cro was acting on his own sometimes when he did that, and the coaches were not pleased. Perhaps this is one of the things that has lead to the Chargers wanting to move him.

It was in the mailbag

where people were complaining about the DBs playing off so much.

Hmm

All I’ve found so far is someone asking him about playing 10-15 yards off and Acee saying that he was actually playing up at the line too much. That was in November though.

I seem to recall

it being in the context of discussing players “free-lancing”, which was talked about after the Pittsburgh loss. An example given of a player free-lancing was Cromartie playing off the receiver a lot.

Yeah, I'm looking through a lot of his Cromartie answers in the mailbag

Seems like he was down on Cro through the Pittsburgh game and then kept saying he was doing well since the Pittsburgh game. And, then, I found one where he complains about too much cushion in early December only a few weeks after saying Cro was playing up at the line too much. This is painting a very blurry picture on Acee’s opinions.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Goodbye to Cro and all his kids

I agree I can’t imagine Detroit giving up a 2nd or even a 3rd just for Cro.
But what do you think about using him to get them to swap 2nd round places? They get their corner and keep a 2nd round. We get to move up and take one of the better RBs and not have to drop a 1st on an RB that probably isn’t worth it.
Do we still have a 2nd? I can’t remember all that stuff.

The rumor is

That they are willing to give up a 3rd.

from a draft pick value stand point they are worth the same

Chargers #60 pick = 300
Lions # 66 pick = 260
Lions #34 pick = 560

I would love it if the Chargers swaped 2nd rounder with the lions here is a ton of talent in the positions the Chargers need to fill in this yearsdraft in the late first early 2nd.

by Steve (Grey Suit) on Mar 1, 2010 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

Okay

That makes sense to me. But, does it make sense to the Lions? I guess from the Lions point of view, they get Cromartie and 2 rookies (2nd and 3rd rounders) instead of Cro and 1 (the 2nd rounder). I just have a hard time imagining the Lions giving up that high 2nd round pick, which is practically a first rounder even if they got that other 2nd round pick.

This is always where that darn value chart gets into trouble. It just feels like the Lions are losing out by not having their high 2nd rounder.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

also no mention of the Travis Johnson tender

Which Acee mentioned earlier in the week. I wonder if that was an oversight or if it won’t actually happen.

March 4th is the deadline for tenders so we’ll know for sure one way or the other soon.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Mar 1, 2010 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

I'd also think that Dobbins and Clary would get tenders

Maybe Acee is just focusing on the 4 that will get the highest tender.

they have till thursday

It would not shot me if they did not tender Clary due to his injury and the emergence of Dombrowski

who replaces Cro?

Cason? Don’t think he is an improvement. Maybe they figure they can replace him with available free agent talent (the cheap kind) but I fear too much off field stuff is driving the decision making. We are not running a Boys Club. If the player does what he asked, I think off field, within reason, is their business.

If the coaching staff made the call that he is replaceable and is hurting the team, OK. But if AJ decided he is “weak character” and wants to replace him with a more upstanding but less able Cason, I am not sure how this improves the team.

by jayman66 on Mar 1, 2010 3:22 PM PST reply actions

They must feel that Cason is equal or close to equal to what Cro provides. No way to know if they are right if they don’t try, I suppose.

I also think his on the field performance factors in more heavily that you are letting on. Not to mention the business side where Cro becomes a free agent next year.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
