Around SBN: MLB Trade Rumors: Edwin Jackson to the White Sox, DC next?

The San Diego Chargers could be in the market for two running backs after notifying Darren Sproles on Friday they will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Acee: It hardly qualifies as news, but it is now official that Darren Sproles will be able to test the market as an unrestricted free agent.

figured.

if someone picks him up. maybe we should take 2 RBs in the draft or trade up.

Gary Potter: Harness in the good energy, block out the bad. Harness. Energy. Block. Bad. It's like a carousel. You put the quarter in, you get on the horse, it goes up and down, and around. Circular, circle. Feel it. Go with the flow.

The impending loss of Sproles...

…puts Best and McCluster into serious play for that 1st round pick.

I look at it differently

I don’t know that they want their starter to return kicks. I think it puts a KR/PR type in play for a later round pick. Kind of like they did when they originally drafted Sproles.

Agreed

The last starting RB that I can remember returning punts or kicks was Westbrook.

"When they come for me I'll be sitting at my desk, with a gun in my hand wearing a bullet-proof vest, singing 'My, my, my, how the time does fly when you know you're going to die by the end of the night.'" - Catch 22

Well, I simply mean relative to how it was before. It seemed highly unlikely that the Chargers would draft a Best or McCluster type if Sproles were still there, and they certainly aren’t likely to be around by the time they pick in round 2..

If they didn’t want to spend the 1st rounder on such a back, then certainly Joe McKnight enters the discussion for a later round.

McCluster in the first?

Have you been breaking into my “toolshed” as well?

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.

There will be a lot of intrest

in Sproles in the open market. He is a great return man and a good RB. I would like to see Dallas sign him and trade Choice for Cromartie.

Ugh.

That’s all I have to say.

by 'Eaters on Feb 26, 2010 3:52 PM PST up reply actions

I bet he would be

Because a backfield with no RBs is his only chance of starting anymore.

Thomas Jones?

I heard the Jets might not be willing to pay him anymore, and he’s obviously not bad.

The first round

I hope they go with an offensive lineman instead. And get a running back by 2nd round or by free agency

Or DLineman

I still feel the biggest weakness of this team, the thing that kept it from winning (those few times it didn’t win), was the weakness along the defensive front.

For the lousy run blocking that the OLine provided, for the lousy running that the RBs did, it was still a potent offense. I just don’t think this system asks much from the running backs. Catch passes out of the backfield, pick up blitzing linebackers (neither of which is a strong suit in Dwyer’s game, btw), and occasionally rush. As Jamie Dukes likes to say on NFL Network: “Dime a dozen.”

CJ Spiller

Might fall to the end of the 1st round, and he’s one of the most explosive players available this year. He’d be an absolute steal at 28.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on Feb 26, 2010 10:39 PM PST reply actions

It would be a miracle if spiller falls to 28.

But a damn steal if we get him there. The kid won’t make it past 15. Especially after the combine, he’ll move up on team’s boards. He’s damn good.

I'm not totally upset

I think this year I just as much frustrated with Sproles in the return game as I was excited by him. Particularly in the punt return game he seemed to not know when to call a fair catch. I think he was pushhing to hard at times.

There is no way you would tender Sproles and pay him 7.3 mil. Not sure if anyone offers him the money he wants. He might even come back at a lower rate on a long term deal if o big offers come through.

by Aussiecharger on Feb 26, 2010 10:48 PM PST reply actions

I agree

Watching him before he caught the kickoff/punt was just as nerve racking as watching him actually return it.

I'll never buy a jersey if it's not the beginning of a contract.

And I’d never buy a baseball jersey.
