Proj. RB Speed Score Update
Running backs weighed in so my spreadsheet now has actual instead of projected weights for all but one. First thing I started to notice was that a lot of the RBs that people want to see adjust their weight did either gain (Best, Brown, Andre Dixon, James, McCluster) or lose (Blount, Anthony Dixon, Dwyer, Gerhart) weight by various amounts. Dwyer is under 230 which is where scouts wanted to see him. Best is almost up to 200 when people were wondering if he was actually 190. And Anthony Dixon is nowhere near the high 240s that people were projecting him to be at. Anyway, here's what these guys are projected to run and what their speed scores could be as well as what they would have to run to get some good speed scores.

The man-crush has started
I want Jahvid Best in San Diego.

Love Best the player, concerned with durability
I like Best more than I like Spiller, the vision and game speed appear better, but does he fit the inside the guards running style of the chargers? Doubt it.
For pure fit, maybe Ryan Matthews is a better idea, thoughts?
Depends if we keep Sproles
I dont really think you can say Mathews is better fit for us if Sproles leaves. Best has had injuries including one where he got crushed, but Mathews has had his fair share of injuries too.
Best catches the ball really and returns kicks. Is he an insider runner, I dont know. But he can make guys miss and go the distance.
“Best has had injuries including one where he got crushed”
That’s actually not an injury that I would be too concerned about. Anybody who saw it knows that it was pretty freaky/flukey play. It’s the other injuries that are worrisome.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

He's had two, which is worrisome
But the second one was on a play where he leaped into the end zone and in mid air was redirected so that he came down neck first. I don’t see that one happening again. I also see that one resulted in serious injury even if he hadn’t already had a concussion.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Call me Innocent, I thought they would have resigned Sproles
If Sproles is gone, then Spiller, Best and McKnight’s value will certainly increase for the chargers, and they may actually draft 2 RB.
In terms of RB the most gifted in this class I think is Best, but you would probably have to limit his carries to somewhere between 14-17 per game. Somewhere around the lines how Pierre Thomas/Joseph Addai are used.
It’s just a gut feeling, but AJ’s history says he loves productive college backs, and overachievers (Weddle, Rivers, Hester). That being the case I have feeling that Toby Gerhart will be a charger. Not my favorite, he sounds like an AJ type back.
Sproles is gone

Why would a pass-first team draft a player like Gerhart, who offers absolutely nothing in the passing game, instead of an all-around back like Best?

Gerhart is okay in the passing game
He’s an adequate route runner and made some big plays catching the ball, but I understand what you’re trying to say. It’s not one of his top skills.

Call me crazy
but when I look at Gerhart, I see Ron Dayne. College power backs tend to be average in the NFL because the competition is much stronger. To succeed, you need elite power and/or elite speed.

Don't confuse, I don't love Gerhart
But the chargers want to run a power inside running game, and the sure seem to love overachievers. Who has both characteristics Gerhart, I would take Matthews or Best but every GM has a tendency.

Says who?

Play calling for running plays
when the chargers run, we know its the following its a Lead, counter or a draw and what do those plays have in common they’re between the center and guards. And the blocking style is power running. To say its old fashioned is an understatement.
The chargers rarely if ever call sweeps, option pitches, and unlike most teams that run the ball really well i.e. Carolina, Tenneesee to name a few, the chargers don’t really zone block.
Except he has this uncanny ability to disappear in big games.
And a history of injuries.
When he is playing well though, he is amazing to watch.
This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
Let's catalog the blog audience speed scores
I’ve got the weight for a decent number (230 lbs) and maybe can go under 5 sec. (I’ll be generous to myself – 4.95), but the whole 6’6" thing probably doesn’t translate to RB well. Chalk me up for a 76.6.
Hey Chargers, call me! I’ve got a 27-year-old rookie free agent with a 76 speed score who’s ready for a tryout.

Talk to Denver.
They go through like, 10 runningbacks a season.

I'm in!
5’10", 160 lbs, 40-yd time… hmmm. Earlier this year it was around 4.65, but I’ve not been training since then. 4.75 it is.
Yeesh. That’s a 62.9 speed score…
Well, there’s always Cleveland and Detroit.

Scouts, Inc just blogged about the weigh-ins
They liked that Dwyer was under 230. That’s exactly what teams are looking for.
They said that at 218 Matthews: “it was hard to find any fat on his body”
They like the extra bulk on Montarrio Hardesty and said “he is carrying the extra weight well”
Even with the extra weight McCluster needs to run in 4.4s to get a shot a high pick.
They feel that Blount and Scott could stand to lose a few pounds.

Other weigh-in stuff
Because I have no where else to put it.
Notre Dame WR and potential 1st rounder Golden Tate checked in an inch shorter than some thought at 5’10.
Same goes for the enigmatic Syracuse WR Mike Williams who measured 6’1 instead of 6’2.
Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford came in at 6’4 236 and carried it well. He was though to be in 210s when he played for the Sooners.
Texas QB Colt McCoy was thought to be around 6’3, but turns out he’s 6’1.
Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski gained a theoretical inch when he came in at 6’6 and Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham lost one down to 6’5.
Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung (and perhaps future Chief?) was not 6’8, but instead 6’5, but he looked really good physically according to those that saw him. Perhaps solidifying him as the top OL to be taken.
Texas OT Adam Ulatowski also went from 6’8 in people’s imaginations to 6’5.

Golden Tate = Steve Smith
Also, poor Colt McCoy. Those are two very important inches for NFL QBs.

Pierre Thomas was given a 2nd round tender by the saint
Hmmmmm

I wouldn't be against
a move to get Thomas for a 2nd. He can catch very well out of the backfield and run between the tackles.
Wouldn’t it be funny if we got Thomas and they ended up with Tomlinson.

at the very least
It will give us some insight into how high AJ is willing to take an RB in the draft. If he doesn’t pick up Thomas for a 2nd round pick, then we probably won’t be drafting an RB higher than the 2nd round.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Feb 27, 2010 6:57 AM PST up reply actions
Or
He doesn’t like Thomas as much as we do.
Or
He likes someone in the 1st round of the draft better.
Or
He doesn’t like the kind of money he’d have to offer Thomas.
It’s not entirely cut and dry, I guess.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Another thought process
RB is a milleage position, Thomas has some milleage and will want top15-20 RB money, a Rookie has even less milleage and comes cheaper.
AJ sure seems intent on going on the cheap in the RB position, my personal theory 2 RBs one in the second round and another 5-7 round. With one being a power runner, and the other third down-returner type. Take Dwyer-Matthews in the Second round, take Trindon Holliday around 6-7 round.
Pass Blocking
Rookies aren’t good at it. We’re going to need a vet in the backfield to show the kids the ropes and take over in passing situations. We have Bennet, but do we trust him to get that many reps? I don’t know how the team feels about him.
Hey I wouldn't mind trading for Deangelo Williams, but...
I don’t see it happening the chargers want to go on the cheap for their RB, I wouldn’t mind a veteran but at the end of the day, its what AJ wants to do.
AJ thinks because of history with mid rounds RB, he can go later on and get one. I can justify giving up a first for DeAngelo Williams, and basically killing any Defense that plays a 7 man front againt the bolts, I doubt AJ sees it that way.
Or the Chargers don't want to use thier one free agent signing on Thomas

That's a great point
Considering the lack of pass rush I would love to at least make a run on Peppers, but I think the Raiders have a better shot at winning the super bowl next year than Peppers in a charger uni.
The same Pierre Thomas who was 5th in DYAR and 1st in DVOA this past season? I’d pay a second for that.

P Thomas is a major upgrade
I like that with a Blount-type in the fourth. 1st round needs to be an impact NT no doubt about it, but the other picks need to fill the RB holes. Buster Davis can return kicks and punts. If Cromartie is still here, let those two battle for the ST returns. Focus on RB who can move the chains and catch the ball. P Thomas is a proven runner who can mentor a rookie.
Ben Tate
Had a great combine. Scouting reports I’ve read say he’s a downhill, between the tackles type of runner who can catch passes well. Sounds like a great fit for SD. What do you guys think?
I came to say the same thing
the man crush on Tate gas begun! I’d be happy with Tate, Matthews, or Best.

Edit
He might not be a mid round guy anymore, I just looked at his combine numbers; and they’re are ridiculous. He’s in the top 3 in almost every drill.
Yea thats what I was wondering...
How high does a great combine shoot up a RB? Previously he was projected for around the 4th round I think.
Jonathan Stewart went from projected 3rd rounder
to mid second to low first to 13th overall pick. RBs can witness ridiculous changes of fortune.
