Roster Needs
1) RB X 2 (rd 1-3) (rd 4-7)
Definitely the most glaring need with the departure of long time great LT, and the possible loss of 3rd down RB/KR Darren Sproles. I have us picking two RBs because it just makes good sense to double dip at HB in order to protect the team against injury and or below average performance. I figure it cant hurt for a high pick to have to compete with a low round pick for playing time or a spot on the active game day list. If Sproles were to depart obviously we would need at least one vet back. I'm not going to mention the top FA RBs because I doubt we would acquire one, it's my opinion that around 75% of all RB touches in 2010 will come from a rookie(s).
Javid Best (assuming no Sproles), Ryan Mathews, and Jonathan Dryer are my favorite first day guys in order (yes I left Spiller off, cause he should go real high) Ben Tate is the only back I know enough about to say I like him as a mid round pick.
2) NT (rd 1-3)
The more I thought about the roster; I realized that the Chargers really have decent depth at DE. I expect Johnson, OG, and Martin to all be Chargers in 2010. Which would put all the rest besides Jwall and Castillo on the bubble. So assuming we do draft a shorter larger guy with the intention of having him back up Jwall at the nose; your Dline in 2010 would be Castillo, Johnson, OG, Martin, Jwall, and the rookie. There is plenty of youth and what appears to be upside in that unit, but it would require the severance of ties with known rotational bodies like Bingham and Ceasaire,
Cam Thomas I would hope to be high on the Chargers draft board because they'll surely have to reach to acquire his services. From what I've seen he's quick enough to possibly get some interior snaps in nickel.
3) DB (rd 1-5)
I labeled it DB because the Chargers could possibly look at a just getting the best secondary player in space. Weddle and Ellison would seem better suited to play closer to the line of scrimmage, so this pick could be used for either a center fielder, a CB that projects as one, or a true corner. I do expect Cro to be traded, and obviously that would increase the need for a true corner; hopefully his trade would result in a decent pick, and subsequently an adequate roster replacement.
This draft seems to be strong in secondary players, my favorite high to mid round prospects are FS Rashard Jones and CB Brandon Ghee.
4) OT (rd 3-5)
Count me as one of the people that think our offensive line we fielded in 2010 will be the same one we fielded against the Jets in the playoff game. I do however think we need to bring in a rookie OT to compete for the third (OT spot) and even starting RT job.
Jason Fox is a guy with a recent injury that could drop to us around this range of picks, I must admit I havent see many of this games though.
5) and 6) (rd 6-7) WR and LB
Just looking for STs players at this point, who have upside as developmental projects.

RB
I would love to see the Bolts go after Chester Taylor. Despite being 30, he has only one season with more than 160 carries (303 carries – 1216 yds in ’06), and has a lot left in the tank. I also think he would fit the system well.
Taylor along with Sproles/Best would be a solid combo.
I’m confused as to why the vikings let him go. he was working well with AJ

He's a UFA
They didnt let him go his contract ran out. He still could sign with the Vikes, or any other club he wanted to. I wouldnt mind at all signing Taylor to a 2 year deal, but I’m almost certain we are going to throw a rookie back into the back field and expect him to carry the load.
call me crazy but I see AJ going WR with Demaryius Thomas
In the first round. He’s a underrated receiver, body type that’s rare, clean off the field, plays hard and needs time to learn the offense. He’ll get a year or two. I know we got Craig and that 7th rounder from last year but Floyd and Jackson will be leaving soon.

and nice posting
I think AJ has groups of RBs lined up for rounds 2-5.

Well,
Crazier things have happened in the draft before, and Thomas has the size that AJ obviously likes. However, that would be a pretty large reach. He played in the triple option, so who knows how he will adjust to a modern offense. Not to mention, I think that we have such glaring holes at RB and DT, we have to look that way in the first round (or trade down for more picks if possible).
This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
sorry, the below was for you – I agree that you are perfectly logical. NT or not: The question is what’s AJ’s grade on Cody? 370 pound guys who can play football are rare.

Pass on Cody
I would prefer a 1st day pick at least have a possibility of playing 3 downs, Cody didnt even play 3 downs in college.
2 downs is two downs.
2 downs is two downs more then zero. Stopping the run is hard. The last two 1st round picks don’t play that much and the team is still good.

Jamal
Has been a two down guy for quite some time as well. I think that is to be expected from our NT

Jamal became a 2 down player
after suffering an immense physical toll on his body season after season. You need to keep those 34 year old knees fresh. I was 11 when Jamal was drafted. Since he’s been a Charger I’ve went through 3 years of middle school, 4 years of high school, and 4 years of college. That’s a loooooong time in the NFL and he was a 3 down player for a majority of those years. Cody on the other hand can’t even keep his fat self on the field for 3 downs in college.

true, but we don’t need a jamal type player to be a three down player. We can have our NT be a specialized 2 down guy. Our 3-4 base defense is pretty different from our nickel, which is a 4-2 (with our OLBs playing the DEs). If our base was a 4-3, it might be more important for our DTs to play all three downs, but not so much in our scheme.
That being said, I agree that Cody’s weight is an issue and I’m hoping we stay away.

The other thing with being a "2 down" type guy
Is what happens when you have 6 plays or so in a row without a 3rd down. Or you fumble a punt or kickoff and don’t get much rest on defense. Those are situations where you need to dig down and come up with something. But, if Cody is conditioned such that he can’t stay on the field in those situations then that’s a problem.
Also, Jamal played in the league 10+ years before he became that type of player. Where will Cody be at in 5-10 years if he already is having to substituted for?
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Cody obviously has great potential.
But he appears to have trouble managing his weight. If he could trim down from 370 to 340 or so, he would be one hell of a player. That does happen to be a big “if”. It will be interesting to see what he weighs in at the Combine and at his pro-day.

Couldn't this be assisted with
contract stipulations to reduce risk?
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
I know that Cincy had Andre Smith sign a contract like this.
He gets much more money if he stays under 330 or whatever it is.

I could see us trading up. We don’t have that many holes, we got a bunch of development players, we don’t need 7 new guys.

I like that idea
Patriots are going to clean up with those 3 second round picks
by not humble enough on Feb 25, 2010 7:39 PM PST up reply actions
How do they do it?
How do the Patriots get so many picks every year. I know the Bolts handed them some in a trade 2 yrs ago, but WTF! I guess I just really hate that team.
Well,
I know they got a few from the Raiders for Seymour, and a few from us.
This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
They got a first rounder for Deion Branch a few years back.
They also do things like trade out of the first round to teams in the top of the second round and get that teams first rounder the next. Those teams in the top of the second suck so that first rounder could be a high pick. They did that to the 49ers a few years ago and got Jerrod Mayo with the high pick. Now he’s their best LB.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

2 RBs in the draft?
I think we are probably going to get two new RBs, but I bet one will come through a trade or FA. Because the passing game is such a huge part of our offense, we need a RB who knows how to pass block. While rookie RBs can become immediately effective at running the ball, they tend to learn blitz pickups and pass blocking in general much more slowly. The ones who were good at it in college tend to take 1/2 a season to really get it figured out in the NFL, with most of them not really getting it until the second year. Because our passing game is such a big part of our offense, and Rivers’ health is critical, I think we at least have an active RB who is a proven NFL commodity who is good at pass blocking.
And I think this is also the one of the main reasons why AJ will think a long time about keeping Sproles around.

Yes 2RBs via the draft
Thats just my opinion. I figure there’s about a coin flips chance Sproles will be back. So the 3 RBs the Chargers carry have to come from somewhere. I do agree that we will have a vet back on the gameday roster, for a couple of the reasons you mentioned.
I just happen to think that the third RB, who may possibly inactive on gamedays will be a rookie; along will our starting rookie.
I think we should go after one of the Carolina back. deangelo Williams i beleive is a FA this year and i think he wants to be a every down back and he deffinately can do it.
Yeah but...
There is a difference between the Panther’s OLine and our OLine when it comes to run blocking. But don’t get me wrong. The kid is talented and I would like to see him in a Charger’s uniform too (although I like Jonathan Stewart more). Wasn’t the previous year (before this last one) the last one he played a complete season? Would still need to pick up a quality #2 back.
If they think he could play NT instead of a DT I think it would be very interesting if the Chargers traded their 1st and 3rd to move up and grab Suh from Nebraska. Now that would be CRAZY!
