LaDainian Tomlinson Released by the San Diego Chargers
According to ESPN, LaDainian Tomlinson has been released by the Chargers. The Chargers and LT "restructured" his contract last season, and he was going to get a $2 million bonus and $3 million in base salary in the deal coming off his least productive season as a pro. We've all gone over this decision ad nauseum and we knew it was coming and this just makes it official.
As far as the AFC West goes, I don't really see LT being a fit on any of the other AFC West teams. The Raiders are stacked at RB, the Chiefs have a young super-star in the making in Jamaal Charles, and the Broncos also have a bunch of young RBs and don't seem to have any desire for an old veteran.
Thanks for everything LT, you were a tremendously tremendous player. I hope you come coach at San Diego State someday.

He had an great run, but nothing lasts forever unfortunately.
Nine years of mostly amazing play from a position where the average career lasts three or four years. It’s been great watching him his entire career. Seeing him in another uniform won’t be easy, but it’ll be fine knowing it’ll be easier seeing him in his induction into Canton years later.
I love my team of historically talented underachievers.
Its being reported by more than just ESPN now
NCT and UT are both reporting it

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
THANK YOU
For your actions on and off the field, you’re a class act LT; I wish you and you new family all the best.
LT
LT: Good luck in all you do. You are an inspiration! To you and your family, I wish you all the best.
Heartbreaker...
Man, LT is my hero, i wished this day would’ve never come, he should’ve retired with us man…
It’s so sad this couldn’t get worked out, i still believe he’s got something left, maybe not as a feature back but certainly as a contributor, and i would’ve loved to win a sueprbowl with him on the team.
Kinda crazy because he’s been a Bolt as long as i’ve been a Bolts fan so i kinda love him as much as the team… Very sad day, oh well we can hope for no other team to pick him up and he comes back home to SD
LT_21 is now a classic
you could sell that handle on eBay
I recently realized
That LT’s departure leaves a different kind of void with the Chargers. Who on the team is leader in the community now? Are they any other Chargers that provide the kind of off-the-field contributions that LT was providing? Why is this missing from out current Chargers?
I’m looking at you Phil.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Phil
is going to have to be that guy…. I can’t even think of anybody else who could do it… Maybe Gates.
I agree
and to be honest, from LT’s comments it doesn’t sound like he really felt like he was being treated like a leader by some of the guys, so I wonder how effective he really was as a leader. Hopefully leadership consollidates around Rivers, but also, hopefully he’s actually up to it.
Unfortunately for the community
Phil is a much more dedicated father than he is a community leader.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
He also doesnt live here
But you’re right Wonko I pointed out LT off field contributions above. But didnt think about who could possibly even slightly replace his community work.
I was under the impression
that Rivers lived in San Diego County.

Lists Phil as being a resident of the city.

Probably lives in the really nice area by Maderas.
This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
Quentin Jammer
has done some real good in San Diego.
I actually thought about Jammer as I was writing this
He was the only one that I could recall doing multiple really good things.

All things will sort themselves out with time of course...
… However I’m currently concerned more with LT’s on-field replacement being found than his off-field one.
New personnel come to the team yearly. Who’s to say some of them will/won’t do community work. Besides, LT is very well established here Dom a community, charity and business (ex: Snug) perspective. He may not be playing for the team anymore, but I doubt he’s going to be tearing up everything he’s built and established off-field in San Diego.
I love my team of historically talented underachievers.

It shouldn’t be difficult to replace what he contributed this past season.

Now, if we’re talking about trying to replicate what he did in 2006/2007 that’s a different story.

GOD THIS STINGS.
Like a clinic trip. For 2 seasons I wanted you out. But I couldn’t call myself a Charger fan if wasn’t feeling at a loss. The greatest to ever don lightning bolts. And you’ll be remembered as such. Still <3 21.
booty.
Goodbye Mr. Tomlinson.
You did great things for the Chargers on the field, and will hopefully continue to do great things for San Diego off of the field.
This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
Cya LT
LaDainian was a great player for us from the get go. He’s seemed out of place for at least the last 2 years. ‘01 – ’07, I don’t think there was anyone better at running back. He’ll be sorely missed, but he needed to go. It was like watching someone slowly die…
Its not out of the question for LT to re-sign with a new deal
The FO didnt want to pay the conract he was owed, bu he can be signed for the league minimum plus incentives. It happens all the time in pro sports.
The torch has been passed, and Henne has added fuel to the fire!
LT didn't sound very open to such a deal

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
He's hurt, and that's understandable.
I’m not saying it will happen, just that it is a possibility if no other team jumps quick to sign him.
The torch has been passed, and Henne has added fuel to the fire!
It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

He's emotional
big time… more so than any player I can think of ever. Sometimes that’s a good thing, you play to win not a paycheck, you take the playoffs seriously, etc. (wish our younger guys were a bit more). Sometimes it’s a bad thing, when you can’t separate things. There are so many advantages for him to stay with the Chargers (good chance to win a SB), but he’s so upset he can’t bring himself to come back for less.
You mean when he said he would “absolutely not” consider restructuring his contract again?

L.T was great
but he was not a leader on the team. He was quite during all the playoffs when the chargers were losing he sat by himself on the sideline. He never tried to walk the sidelines and try to pump up the team.Besides that he’s a great running back.
BYE LT
It’s a sad day to see an all time great leave. We appreciate everything you did for us charger fans. The hard part for me is explaining to my kids why this happened all they have ever known is LT’s greatness.
Later LT
You were a pretty good linebacker.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

I think it was the “pretty good” part of that comment that made me laugh.

Thanks for everything, LT.
I’m glad we got to have you in your prime.
“Wave to your mama!”
33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.
Very sad day.
I knew it was happening. Was hoping it wouldn’t. Thanks for the memories LT. Thanks for the fantastic play. Its too bad you never won it all as a Charger.

I really hope
That he doesn’t do great at all. Because I hear enough bs about bringing back Marty and shouldve kept brees. I don’t want LdT to have the same story following him. I wish him the absolute best, I really do. But just not on the field.

You know...
I was watching SportsCenter when the news broke. And I sat at my computer for more than 7 hours, waiting for SOME KIND of announcement, notification, post, or SOMETHING from this site. Why’d it take so long? I was starting to think we weren’t even going to talk about it on here! lol
My faith in the San Diego Chargers will always be at maximum strength for as long as I live. CHARGERS ROLLLL!

HOF
As a Bronco fan I must admit it will be nice to not have LT kicking our butts anymore. As a football fan I can only admire him as a player and person.
Goodbye LT, unfortunately skill is not eternal resource
Every charger fan has to come to grips to the reality of the passage of time, and making sense of separating the legend that LT has made and the current 31 year old LT that averaged 3.3 yards per carry.
I will tell my kids that LT was one the 5 greatest backs I have seen in person for the last 25 years and maybe the greatest charger.
Unfortunately at his current production he can very easily be upgraded, and will be upgraded by a front office that does it job well.
So long, man! Thanks for the memories!
I hope LT goes to some NFC team and gets 25 more TDs in three more years.

I thought about that
But they have 2-3 solid backs because they lost 2 of them last season, maybe they give him a chance but I don’t see where he fits on any team with the production he showed last season.

it's a sad day...
not that i didn’t see this looming on the horizon, i just wish things could’ve been different, like with a ring or two and LT still putting up numbers in SD, but that’s not gonna happen…i wish my kid would’ve been born with LT still a charger….it’s time to go jersey shopping
"that wasn't a very good start to us getting our lives together. i didn't even go to work today."
...ya'll are brutalizing me... ronnie dobbs
bringing another charger fan into the world for the 2010 season...i hope i get a linebacker

--Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
--Someone should slap Larry Brown and bring him back to reality..
Because of the obvious fact that LT has lost a step or two from his golden years, i really wish he would just go on and retire rather than put on another jersey and keep playing in a less then stellar capacity, too many great ones don’t want to or never knew when to stop, hope he is differant. He is also one of the classiest players in the league, yea they are athletes and we don’t need them to raise our kids but LT was one i wish my son would take on as a role model, can’t go wrong there compared to all the other wanna be thugs and their posse hanger ons that you keep hearing about in pro sports, uuhh like say Burris for example!!
