Expect the Franchise Tag for Vincent Jackson
Adam Shefter is reporting: "Multiple people around the league now believe the Chargers have no choice but to slap their franchise tag on Jackson, lest they lose him in free agency."
The franchise tag would run the Chargers about $10.6M and of course would create more controversy and animosity between the team and the wide receiver. However, not using it on him would only serve to help Jackson and would be of no benefit to the team. Using it would mean the Chargers retain his rights and can get value from him. We have a pretty good idea already how A.J. Smith deals with that sort of decision tree.

I saw that as soon as I finished publishing mine
Should have checked. I could have deleted mine, but I liked some of the stuff I added about it.

I’m thinking there’s a bunch of other UFA’s that they could use that tag on… Weddle being the first one that comes to mind.
Nope
Weddle will get a long term deal. Thats an AJ type player all the way.

Weddle should be anybody’s type of player.
there are a bunch of uncertainties
primary being the new collective bargaining agreement, but there are lots of guys the Bolts would like to have long term that are going to be unrestricted free agents this off-season. I do agree that Weddle is maybe #1 (perhaps #1a behind Floyd), but they might need to use the franchise tag on a guy like Weddle or floyd to buy themselves some time to negotiate a long term deal
Because that policy worked so well with Sproles //sarcasm

I don't think Floyd or Weddle
are worth franchise tag money. As you pointed the Chargers got stuck overpaying Sproles.
In principle, I think Weddle would be
Safety isn’t a terribly expensive position to begin and he really is the “Don’t Break” part of the “Bend but don’t break” we’ve run the last couple of years. I can’t think of anyone being more integral to the defense over the last 2-3 years than Weddle.
That said, he’s getting a long term deal so it’s a moot point.

In theory
Weddle cold be an RFA.

Seriously?
Gaslamp Ball Game OT: "Makes you happy in the pants"
"Even Jedis don't stand a chance against our bullpen."
If not VJ then who?
We were able (for the most part) to have our way in the passing game with the likes of the AFC West and NFC West with Floyd, Nanee, Clayton, et al, but does anybody think that group is capable of going deep into the playoffs? If we don’t retain VJ then AJ has to go out and get another big threat to complement Rivers-Gates in playoff games against the Steelers, Ravens, Pats, et cetera. Is VJ really that much more expensive than Fitzgerald or an equivalent? AJ has to be thinking about thinking about The Ring at this point, not just draft picks (which he hasn’t been using so wisely lately). He’s got to be more active in free agency whilst Rivers is still in his prime.
I think we could go as far as the Colts did
with Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon.
Seriously, it’s the QB and system that make the receiver. We’ll be fine.

Nah, it starts with the QB..
and ends with were it’s thrown. simply put, you need both. ex Sam Bradford is having an outstanding year for a rookie QB, that everyone expected to get killed, and not be competitive this year at all. Now the argument can be made Zach, that they’re successful “because of him” , but if that’s case they should be winning more games. However, PR seems to be in similar circumstance, albeit PR has far more experience and is levels above Bradford, PR has had a lot of new faces to throw to and has the 8-6 record to prove it. then out of no where, over the last two games, BANG! we’re the “Super Chargers” again? because PR is da’ man?
Seriously, the QB and WR need each other, is a symbiotic relationship. the last game should prove we need to be more than just fine. after all somebody needs to throw it, and somebody needs to catch it in double coverage for the winning score. no system or QB makes that happen, please give credit to the “skill” position player.
peace out

You forgot to mention Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark
The QB and system are huge factors but to continue to pretend that players like Legs and Tutu can step in and replace VJ is odd to me.
it will be interesting to see how the next two games shake out
In the last two games we have been the Chargers of old. Has it been because VJ was in the starting lineup? Or because we were playing two teams with QBs who should not be starting in the NFL, which lead to us getting early leads and then being able to play our game.
Next week should be interesting since Carson Palmer has the ability to be a legit NFL QB and that offense could keep us from building up too big of a lead.
I’m reserving judgement on how important VJ is until I see a few more games. It could be that the Chargers now are not much different than the 6-6 Chargers of three games ago, we’ve just played two craptastic QBs the last few weeks than makes us look a lot better.

No need to reserve judgement
He kicked ass all last season and he is doing it again now. He is only one player so I don’t pretend to give him all the credit for these last two wins, but are you suggesting that if the Chargers don’t win every game he plays in then he has no value.
Not building an early big lead will only get him more looks as the Chargers will be throwing more.
no VJ is clearly a top 5 receiver
I am reserving judgment on how critical he is to the Charger’s offensive success, and not letting myself get carried away by two very successful games he participated in compared to the 12 he did not participate in.
Between all the turnovers and special teams blunders, it is really had to tell how much VJ would have helped us in those first 12. For me, the one critical item that the Charger’s have lacked this year is the last 5 minutes of the game comeback. We’ve had a couple that fell just short. In previous years they always seemed to succeed. Perhaps it is the law of averages catching up with us, or perhaps it is the lack of VJ. The one thing that would convince me is if one of these next two games starts off poorly, and then PR and VJ stage a last minute comeback.
Because one of the joys of a Charger fan’s life is watching PR go “All Philip Rivers” on some team, and it would be a big bummer if VJ was the critical cog to that and he was let go.

Early in the year
special teams and fumbles were the biggest issue, but the offense was also unable to finish drives putting up FGs instead of TDs all too often. I think VJ is the type of WR that makes some important catches each week, turning 3rd downs into first and turning FGs into TDs.
I will remain a big Charger fan VJ or not, I just hope that try to keep him. I would hate to see him go and see the Chargers give Floyd a huge contract.
Clearly loosing a WR like ExJax is a step down
to pretend that players like Legs and Tutu can step in and replace VJ is odd to me.
But I think Jackson already gave us the answer this year, "Without me guys like Legs and Tutu and 15 others along with Rivers make a top 1 or 2 passing offence." That ain’t chopped liver.
AT BEST Ex Jax is just icing on a pretty good cake. The Chargers do not absolutely need to have Ex Jax to succeed.

I agree that they don't need him to have a great offense
and put up big numbers. I think having him makes the team better and helps the Chargers win football games. I enjoy the games more when San Diego wins so I hope that they keep VJ.
When the Chargers are losing they will pass the ball more and put up more yards and cool stats, they were losing a lot early this season so they put up some big numbers.
What it have looked like IF
Jackson had taken the 3 million? And had a healthy productive season? I know those are ifs, and with the injuries at WR this year maybe healthy is a big IF…
But I think had it unfolded this way, there would have been a gigantic question mark around whether the Chargers could succeed without V Jax.
Think about the stats a healthy Jackson could have put up this last season??! What a HUGE missed opportunity for the guy! Another year older and very little to show for it.

agreed.
but now that we’ve seen the offense with and without him, let’s move on and make it an offense with him, for years to come.

Let's also not pretend that Gates doesn't exist
Sure, he’s injured now, but that (hopefully) won’t last forever.

VJ makes the whole team better
Look at what the running game has done, with the safety playing deep to double VJ. It has totally opened up the running game. Imagine if Gates was healthy, this offense would be unstoppable. Think about this, VJ, Floyd, Legs, Crayton, Buster, Tutu, Gates, McMicheal, Matthews, Tolbert, and Sproles as the offensive weapons. I am drooling thinking about all those guys healthy.
The defense is playing great, because the other team is behind right away. The D can just get after the QB. Look at the Raiders game. Run after run while playing from behind, the offense couldn’t get on the field. With VJ the offense and defense are better.
I guarantee you
That “VJ, Floyd, Legs, Crayton, Buster, Tutu” will never all be on the same active 45 for a game day. Never.

because Buster will not be here. and Crayton wil be to expensive…..

Paid the guy ! He’s worth the money. we need him.
