Shawne Merriman's season ended before it began. Bills placed him on IR. He won't play for Buffalo.

Siberia sucks doesn't it?
6/10/2010 - Tra Thomas signs with the Chargers
8/21/2010 - Tra Thomas retires.
That was fast.
Cheap Shots
I blame the Titans and Jeff Fisher who ruined his career during the game in 2007. It was Kevin Mawai and another OL who busted his knee on purpose. Karma will turn itself around! He was great when healthy.

Too bad
I was actually hoping he would do well. he was exciting when healthy and on the juice. Maybe the Chargers finally cut loose someone who deserved it? Now we still need an impact LB to compliment SP, because he can’t do it all himself.
First round next year.
Antwan Barnes is good enough for now.

Unless we go into the secondary.
If there’s a bona fide pass rusher (a Merriman-type, not a stretch like English) when they pick in the first, then they should take him. If not, they should take a CB in the first and use another pick on an OLB. Maybe a 2nd/3rd and a 5th/6th to get a project with good upside and an insurance policy, like they did in ’07 at ILB, with Waters (who washed out) and Siler (who turned out well).

AJ Smith
Won’t be happy until he has an entire secondary full of first round picks. I’d much rather go WR or OLB/DE in the draft than CB

With you on OLB/DE, but not on WR.
And OLB/DE only if we’re sure he’s the guy. Larry English would have been fine as a 3rd-rounder. This team is getting its sacks already, so no gamble required. If there’s a guy out there when we draft that we think really slid, then maybe.
First-round WRs aren’t what this team needs. Everybody wants to play WR for San Diego; it should be no problem amassing a good collection of WRs without a major investment in an unproven player.

You need top athletes on the corners.
It takes two years to build a CB. How long do you think Jammer has left before he moves to SS?

And then, yes, we'll have first-rounders (or equivalent) at all four secondary positions.

This sucks
Shawne will always be one of my favorite Chargers. He was at the top of the league when he was healthy, and I really really hope he can recapture that somewhere.
Commiserating SM's lost season is one thing
But it doesn’t change the fact that he screwed the Chargers and Bills out of a combined 3 million dollars. This is the SAME injury he had at the end of last season. Why didn’t he have off season surgery last season to fix it? Oh yeah he was too busy holding out on the Chargers so he could pull the 3 million tender money.
He’s done. And he knew it almost a year ago. I don’t think there is a high degree of success and chance he returns to the NFL after Achilles tendon replacement. SM just pulled a 3 million LEAVING bonus. He did the same thing with the PCL repair.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
If he plays next year, he proves us all wrong. But nobody will guarantee him seven figures again, that’s for sure.
