Chargers sign former Cowboys S Pat Watkins

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers added S Pat Watkins and released WR Gary Banks to make room on the roster. The release of Gary Banks is not surprising since Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee are getting healthy and Vincent Jackson is just one week away from being activated.

My recollections of Pat Watkins mainly consist of him being the weak link in the Cowboys secondary when he used to start a few years ago. Since then he's been almost exclusively a backup. It's probably safe to assume that he's joining the team to play special teams. It's also possible that this says something about the severity of the injury to Steve Gregory, but that's just speculation.

Pat Watkins will wear #26.

4.43 40 time

And supposedly a ‘leader on special teams’ for the ‘Boys last year or so. We’ll see.

I'm all for big, physical guys who can fly

But why’d Dallas cut him if he’s all that and a bag of chips? Any insights, anyone? I have no clue about this guy.

Are Marlon McCree and Antonio Cromartie the same person? Just askin'.

I think

he was just ST, he ends up being not very good in coverage as Wonko notes and the Cowboys didn’t want to use the roster spot that way.

Cowboys miss him on special teams.

I just did a search on him. Found an ESPN article where Cowboys missed their veterans on special teams, including Pat Watkins. Looks good so far.

Team is trying to find another KO...

his dimensions are eerily similar:

Osgood: 6’5", 220 lbs
Watkins: 6’5", 218 lbs

Hrrmmmm….probably coincidence, but I think he’s definitely here for ST’s.

Oh and I should mention

he’s probably too tall as a safety and that’s why he was cut from Dallas. While he may have straight line speed and height, most guys that tall are not that fast in and out of cuts because of their higher center of gravity…I say “most” because there are guys out there like VJ that make that not the case. However, I don’t think you can find a successful defensive back out there that is 6’5"…which probably tells you one of two things:

A) a guy that tall can’t be a good DB
B) all the guys that tall and athletic are more successful at WR than as a DB

Actually it may be a combination of the two but either way, my point remains that he’s probably here as a ST’er and not for help in the secondary.
