According to Jason LaCanfora Vincent Jackson will sign his tender by week 8

It appears the Vincent Jackson finally understood that in a game of chicken AJ Smith doesn't flinch. So the question for everybody, what role will VJ have when and if he signs his tender?, the chargers are the number 1 ranked offense without him.

My guess is 2-4 weeks of part time duty, with the final 4 games as a starter, and a full playoff push, who would have guessed that both McNeill and Jackson could be there by the time the playoffs start. It sure didn't look possible a month ago. What your take guys?

Thanks for the video, it sure sounds like its inevitable

I really does explain the situation, it does mean that VJ would only play in 6 games, so he will basically be invisible this season.

Jason LaCanfora mentioned this on Total Access

And the NFL network crawl kept repeating the same news

VJ

Where in the world does this information come from. AJ is the soure of our issues, the guy needs to get a better understanding of how to deal with todays players….If he doesn’t he will “go down with the ship”

AJ is also the source of a perennial championship contender. I believe you’re forgetting that.

Uh... you know, AJ's record in the playoffs is 3-5.

That’s not terrible. The Colts and Saints needed a lot of playoff runs to get there too.

Maybe so

but we have been a playoff caliber team about 3 years after LT got there. Being in the playoffs 8 times in the last 10 years and not even making it to the Conference championship game?

But I don’t think you can blame that totally on AJ. Coaching and PLAYERS have to take some of that responsibility… bonehead def unsportsmanlike penalties, kickers missing field goals, leaders being injured and not being a leader on the sideline…. How do you defend against things like that?

Sorry “AJ is the source of our issues” sorry for the misspell..

This is not news

He’s just out-lining the rules. If Jackson wants to be an Unrestricted Free Agent by today’s CBA rules, which may or may not be the same later, he needs to be on the team for 6 games. For that to happen, he needs to sign before Week 8.

That Mankins would sign by week 10 and Jackson on week 8

by TJBOLT on Oct 8, 2010 11:38 AM PDT reply actions

They should get a third either way

He still would be a free agent at the end of the season, if the compensatory system is still place, the third should be the return.

Jackson's agents

are still claiming that they can structure his contract in such a way that the Chargers only get like a 5th rounder. They seem to be operating under the impression that the comp picks are awarded based on first year’s base salary. I find that odd, because first of all, the formula for determining the picks is secret. Second, most people who’ve written about the comp pick system think that it’s determined by the total value of guaranteed money, not first year base salary.

This is why there’s a system to file complains and have third-parties review.

I'd like to read that in print
claiming that they can structure his contract in such a way that the Chargers only get like a 5th rounder.

It seems like these agents just don’t get it. The price for V-Jax’s release has to be > 3rd for the Chargers. It seems pretty simple to me.

by Trendsearcher on Oct 8, 2010 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

They've said

that they think they can structure whatever his new deal is so the first year’s base salary is ridiculously low, thereby reducing the Chargers’ compensation pick to the lowest possible. As I said, I’m not sure how this is possible.

They're mistaken.

Whatever they think the formula is, whatever inside information they may have, no matter how certain they think they are, they’re wrong. Jackson is a player, and the Chargers are a team. The League always sides with teams over players. If a player thinks he’s outmaneuvered his team, there better be some other team coming off as the clear winner, or some ironclad set of rules that unequivocally tells the League he’s right, or the League will fudge it in favor of the team. If Jackson tries to game the comp-pick system, all it will do is cost him up-front money.

Dumbest threat ever

Firstly these D bag agents dont even know the comp pick formula. As NB pointed out. And the one guy that is the best at predicting comps
http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/2010/03/projecting-2010-compensatory-nfl-draft.html
says that the major factor involving comps is avg salary per year. Keep in mind no one has been better at predicting comps he routinely gets 29 or 30 of the 32 right. And has even done well predicting the order within the round. So unless VJack is going to take less money, he isnt going to effect the comp at all

IMO

by Foilhat on Oct 8, 2010 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Not only that but

they should be worried about getting the best deal for VJ and not spending any time at all worried about what comp pick the Chargers may get.

by JeromeB on Oct 8, 2010 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

No kidding.

Anyone else think the biggest reason this went down the way it did is because Jackson has idiots for agents?

The pick is given by the NFL

At the end of the third round, so the pick is like the first pick of the fourth round

Yes.

There are really 8 rounds in the draft

Including 32 comp picks awarded every year.

Jackson had darn well better sign by the indicated time. That fool left a ton of cash on the table. If he doesn’t sign, the team will have his rights again next year.

Unless the situation hasn't changed and the Chargers tender him an offer

Then compensation is dependent on the level of tender offered.
This could be one of the reasons for AJ believing he can get higher compensation if he doesn’t trade VJ for the 2nd and 4th. If he thinks there is a chance of getting VJ as an RFA next year he could slap on a 1st round tender and get a better deal that way.
By forcing VJ to sign, he at least gets 6-10 games out of him at a huge discount.

by riversformvp on Oct 8, 2010 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah if he walks

I belive they still get a comp pick….Depending on if he is restricted or not. Can they tag him next year? Read an Ace article where he said the chargers believed they would still control his rights.

No one knows because so much can change in the labor/management relationship between now and then.

LaCanfora continues to say VJ will sign

He wasn’t as specific as the week he will sign. Source Around the League NFL network

by TJBOLT on Oct 8, 2010 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

Until I get a quote from VJ saying he wants to make sure he doesn’t get caught in this same position next season, I’m assuming the LaCanfora making assumptions.

Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.

by John Gennaro on Oct 8, 2010 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Normally I would agree with this

but considering LaCanfora has been the VJack camp mouth piece I highly doubt this is an assumption at all

IMO

by Foilhat on Oct 8, 2010 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup

And I doubt it was a coincidence that LaCanfora was the one that landed the VJack exclusive interview. Funny thing is Acee has been saying for weeks that the Chargers thought the CBA was on their side as far as retaining VJacks rights into 2011 assuming he missed the 2010 season that is

IMO

by Foilhat on Oct 8, 2010 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I think this is news based on

some recent clarification about whether guys like VJ and Mankins will continue to be Restricted Free Agents next year even under a new collective bargaining agreement. Everyone (including me) thought that RFAs in the new CBA would be defined solely based on years of service. However, there is a subtle rule that if an RFA doesn’t sign his tender and doesn’t play, he is still an RFA next year no matter how many years of service he has. Of course this all depends on what the new CBA looks like, but the thinking is that the players and union have bigger fish to fry in the current labor fight than fight for a specific exception for two of their 600 members who refused to play for millions of dollars.

Because of this, I have come to the conclusion that VJ will sign his tender in time to get an accrued season (BREAKING NEWS!!!). However, I think we can expect him to nurse a hamstring injury and be inactive every week (from the sound of his recent comments, I have come to the conclusion that his left hammy is a little tight and won’t stand up to the rigors of an NFL game… wink wink).

This guy needs to get better representation

He played chicken and lost. He doesn’t have a contract, has 6 games of suspension to sit out, no guarantee that he won’t be in same position next year, and he’s still doing the same thing as me on game days. Suck it up, sign the tender, and make yourself useful.
