Asking the Enemy
Hello Bolts! I venture over from the land of Silver And Black Pride to offer any Raiders insight you may be in search of leading up to the big game. This is assuming the Raiders have enough healthy hamstrings to actually play the game.
Raider Nation was hoping/expecting to be 2-2 at this point, but a win to snap the streak of futility against the Chargers will erase any ill will the citizens have built up. I gotta say, I am not thrilled with the matchups. Especially, the Chargers front Defensive 7 against the Raiders Offensive line.
Ask away and please feel free to offer anything of note about your team and what you expect from the upcoming matchup.

2010 Draft Class
Very hyped class. How have they looked, in particular McClain?
Missed this. See below.
Quick take, the top 2 are about expected and the rest are almost all better than expected.

Is Michael Bush the real deal
Now that we have seen McFadden start to perform up to expectations, is Michael Bush starting to come into his own too? You guys might have a two-headed monster in the backfield. Can they co-exist? Is Heyward-Bey getting any looks in the passing game?
When Bush is playing, he is the real deal.
He can do it all. He is a tough runner inside and out, he can catch and he can pass protect. The only question mark with him is rather or not he can handle being a lead back. Last year his conditioning came into question and he has the injury concerns.
He and McFadden have had no problems sharing the load and maybe one day they’ll both be healthy at the same time to really test this.
DHB has been getting lots of looks.

Is DHB
going to be a total bust or does he have any hope of making a mark in the NFL? Also, what do you think is difference is in McFadden having more success this year over his previous seasons? I’ve read your O-line is having problems. Is this more related to pass blocking than run blocking?
DHB has improved so much from year one to year two
it is hard to tell it’s the same guy. That being said, he is still a ways away from being a legit #1. He needs to learn how to use his body and catch with his hands better. He also needs to stay healthy.
Among things he improved this year is his strength. He is tough to bring down after he catches the ball.
The offensive line is WAY better at run blocking and vastly improved from last year.
The biggest difference in McFadden has been his health. Of course, that left last week. Also he is running behind his pads and has shown much better balance this year. I doubt he plays this Sunday though.

Kirk Morrison....
Was let go for Rolando McClain because they wanted a better player in run support, but yet Profootballfocus and Football Outsiders had Morrison as a top ten LB in the entire NFL against the run. It was pass where he struggled, but he was good everywhere else. Did Raider Nation know that too? And has McClain been good so far?
There's no place like...the End Zone
by Superduperboltman on Oct 5, 2010 2:24 PM PDT reply actions
Almost every single person that has watched the Raiders
will tell you Morrison was not good in run support. There were some that felt given improved D-tackle play he could be, but he had shown time and time again the inability to get off of or avoid a block. He also had the maddening habit of overrunning plays. While he racked up the tackles, he failed to make many at or near the line.
McClain had been progressing nicely. He had a solid game in Week 3. Then Week 4 came and he looked very Morrison like. It was a step back for sure, but overall fans have been pleased with his aptitude and ability. It’ll be interesting to see how he bounces back against the Chargers.
Coming into the season, his biggest question mark was in pass coverage. It had been solid until last week when Arian Foster exposed him a bit. The Chargers would be wise to isolate him in pass D on a RB.

Fellings on the QB situation?
How are you all feeling about Gradkowski? A lot of us thought the Raiders would be scary this year with Jason Campbell replacing Russel. That doesn’t look like it’s worked out very well. Is it all the O-Line, or do you expect the team to be looking for a new QB next year?
I’m also interested to hear about the rookie class. How’s McClain doing?
"Were such things here as we do speak about?
Or have we eaten on the insane root
That takes the reason prisoner?"
What gave away that Campbell hasn't worked out very well?
There was no denying that the team played better with Grad. I actually went back and reviewed every passing play from the Rams game when they made the switch. The bottom line is, Campbell was making bad reads, he was too cautious, and he looked unprepared.
Grad runs the offense more the way the coaches would like. Grad struggles with accuracy and over aggressiveness, but he is a baller. His fire, competitiveness and clutch factor wins him a lot of fans.
That being said the Raiders would be foolish to not look for a franchise QB. Still, as it sits right now, they need to fix their pass protection first or any QB is going to struggle.
See above for McClain. Overall, the rooks have been solid. Houston has been a decent DE and Veldheer seems ahead of where you could expect a D-2 Tackle to be at this point.

Don't give up on Campbell
Gradkowski has had the benifit of what? 3 years in the system? Once Campbell finds the groove, I think he’s a much better QB than Grad and he doesn’t have Purple Drank’s mobility issues.
Next year is Campbell the guy to start things off if you draft a QB?
by Trendsearcher on Oct 5, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions
I hope you are right, but actually
it is only Bruce’s second year and it is a new system this year. Grad has actually had less time with the system than Campbell. Grad was injured all through mini’s and training camp.

I think the Raiders have a good chance next week
Strangely its shaping up much like game 1 last season, for some similar and different reasons. The Raider passing game this year – not so much. Do you think you are running the ball even better than last year?
This year the problem is not our DL, its our LBs. I’m not sure how we stop the run on Sunday. If the Chargers eliminate the fumbles, we just might be able to throw for a win. How is the Raiders’ pass D this season?
Can you cover the TE?
Has Cable beat up any coaches yet this year? (Actually I think I would have beat that snitch down too)
The Raiders are running the ball way better.
All facets of the running game have improved and it is harder to stack the box without the fat deuce in the backfield. Like I said earlier, I doubt McFadden will be available on Sunday, which will be a blow as Bush may not be ready to go for more than 20 carries and the Bennett the third string back will probably be out as well.
The Raiders Pass D has been great. Nnam is as good as ever and Stanford Routt has solidified the #2 DB spot. SS Branch has struggled in coverage in the few times the Raiders do go to a zone, which they have done too often in the redzone. Branch is better in man against TEs than he is in zones, but no one can stop Gates 1 on 1 and the Raiders don’t often double. The Texans leading WR last week was a TE, and it is likely the Chargers will be this week.
There was no love lost for Hanson, the coach who got the broken face.

McFadden Questionable?
I doubt McFadden will be available on Sunday
This makes me very happy (not for his pain, but for the Chargers chances). Yeah it seemed like the Raiders really upgraded at O-Line. Its kinda hard to get a clear read on your run game if the score get lopsided.
So who’s gonna get the reps RB reps on Sunday? It sound like everyone is knicked. Just Bush?
by Trendsearcher on Oct 5, 2010 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Yup Bush, the only other healthy back on the roster right now is Rock Cartwright.
My guess is they are the only two with a carry. Well, FB Reece may get a couple, too. Reece is a dangerous threat receiving BTW.

They aren't gonna give Cartwright the ball are they?
Ouch! Does your front office fill the gaps week in – week out?
In San Diego we’re not really sure who the Chargers are until Sunday morning. You guys need to pick up an RB before Sunday big time. My guess is Cartwright could not get positive yardage even WITH the upgraded O Line. (not that I don’t like Cartwright as a FB – I think he’s top 5 in the league)
by Trendsearcher on Oct 5, 2010 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions
If McF and Bennett are both out they'll have to sign someone.
They don’t have a RB on the practice squad. Still, they were giving carries to Cartwright in the pre-season as RB and I expect no matter who they sign, he’ll be the #2. Justin Fargas is available.
Lord loves a workin' man; don't trust whitey; see a doctor and get rid of it.
by Rich Langford on Oct 5, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes the Chargers do that too
they were giving carries to Cartwright in the pre-season as RB.
They do that just so the FB’s don’t start thinking they are undersized offensive linemen. Everyone knows the Coach isn’t REALLY serious about ACTUALLY giving the FB a serious touch in a real game.
I was very surprised to see Tolbert get the rushing reps here in SD. He got some straight-aheads in the mush at KC and did OK. Things kinda took off from there, but the minute he starts getting stuffed at the line – its , "Back to the corral little cow!"
I’m joking about Tolbert he’s a pretty versatile back. He’s just no where near as good a blocking FB as a guy like Cartwright. And I wouldn’t expect Cartwight to rival Tolbert’s versatility. Maybe Cartwright gets the ball and does well… I like those odds.

that guy.
I thought the Raiders killed it this off-season, I’m not sure Cable is the right head coach though, what is the consensus there?
Also Heyward Bey has the reputation of being greased lightning, but also having greased fingers, does he hang on to the ball better this year?
Finally, I’ve always liked Michael Huff at safety, but he had some rough patches, how has he been doing this season?

Well, at 1-3 Cable is not winning any supporters.
Head Coach for the Raiders is a funny spot. Most fans realize the uniqueness of that spot and the difficulties it presents hiring. Still, I think the majority would be in favor of replacing him.
DHB’s hands have been a thousand times impoved. That being said, they are still below average! He catches the ball with his body too much and he has the annoying tendency to jump for every catch.
Huff had a horrible 1st game and last game. He is solid in pass coverage, but scary in tackling. The thing is the Raiders often play a one deep safety and Huff is the last line of defense, so when he whiffs on a tackle, it is painful.

However, Gates is going to be so overwhelmed by the Raider defense that he will end up 0 catches and 11 drops! 7 of which will wind up as INT’s. Did I mention I don’t place money on my Raiders predictions?

Those are important.
The Raiders will be able to stop the pass better than they will be able to stop the run. So if the crowd can force penalties or if Special Teams can put points on the board, they have a good shot. If not, Mathews and Tolbert will hammer them on first down, and Rivers will start bombing off play-action.

Kickoff returns are slowly improving.
All of last year and most of this the blocking has been abysmal. Rookie Jacoby Ford is lightning though and he had a 60+ return last week with the blocking slowly improving.

Much better. Don't read anything into anything, though.
The Chargers’ solution to their punting problems seems to have been threefold. As you’ll see, one is a band-aid, one is unreliable, and one is probably for real.
1) School the young special teamers in the importance of playing good ST to keep their jobs. These discipline lapses will close up… mostly.
2) Rotate starters into the special teams. Of course, this is hazardous.
3) Score a TD on every drive, and kick high. Are you, by chance, the Cardinals?

He’s a UDFA guy from last year correct? Nice find for you.
His catching skills are second to none as a FB
He is a converted college WR. He is a real match up problem. The Raiders like to get him in the flat on the screen and he also ran a couple of wheel routes in the pre-season.
His blocking is improving. He is not going to blow people up, but he seems to be getting in the right position to interfere. He has been a nice find at with his rate of improvement at FB, the guy has a high ceiling.

Dang! what did he weigh in College?
He is a converted college WR.
That’s NFL TE size. So he has some foot speed too… (Silly me – everyone one on the Raiders has foot speed…) Well let’s hope he performs in the backfeild.
I guess with Miller you are pretty set at TE. No chance for a guy like Reece to get a shot at TE? Probably doesn’t show the leverage to play on the line right now. Is that the deal?
by Trendsearcher on Oct 5, 2010 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions
He actually spent his first year on the practice squad as a TE and FB
I don’t remember ever seeing him in a games as a TE, but I am guessing you are right about the leverage. He is not a power blocker at all. He has shown good recognition to engage, but he doesn’t get much push.

What is the perception of Gradkowski?
Is he a part time starter until Campbell understands the offense better, or will he have the job permanently?
Are the Raiders looking for a QB in the first round next year? I’m sure Al Davis has interest in bringing in Andrew Luck?
The Raiders already have their first round pick from next year and his name is Richard Seymour
At this point, I don’t thing many fans want Campbell to start. There is the perception that Campbell would be better for the Raiders with a better O-line. As for understanding the offense, Campbell had way more reps in this offense than Grad.
Grad has a history of injuries, so I am sure Campbell will have a chance to show if he has improved. He’ll have to come in and play well before he has much a backing to start again.

Oh well, the o-line is a mess in pass protection
but most of that is do to the tackle play. LG Gallery has been out since week 1 with, you guessed it, a hammy. He has been replaced by Daniel Loper. Loper has done an admirable job, but got blown up early last week for a sack.
They have been good run blocking as the Raiders have had their most success running between the Guards. C Satele is undersized though and doesn’t get much a push, which can hurt them in short yardage or goal line runs.
Many Raider fans like to complain about RG Carlisle, but he has been solid. He has actually been their most consistent and best o-lineman this year.
When it comes to the Raiders O-line, the worry starts on the outside.

Nnamdi Asomugha
I’ve read some stories about how the Raiders are putting Asomugha in different positions to maximize his impact on the game. Could elaborate on how they’re using him differently and how this has made your defense better?
They talk about it more than they do it.
It was only against Larry Fitzgerald that Nnam has moved and then it was to shadow Fitz. Nnam is playing better than ever though. He has only given up two catches for about 20 yards and had one illegal contact penalty.
I’d be surprised if you see him do anything but line up at right corner against the Chargers.

If the Chargers want to free him up deep, it’d be wise to get the Raiders into the nickel and then put him on the outside on the offensive left where he’d be going up against Chris Johnson.
Johnson was injured in the preseason and then got torched downfield time and again in the final preseason game. He was then hurt in the reg season and returned just last week, but was never really tested.
