After today’s debacle against New England, I think a good case could be made that this is the stupidest team in the NFL. And it’s not just me: Nick Canepa of the Union Tribune said this week before this game that the Chargers “just aren’t very smart,” and John Ireland of KCBS stated twice after today’s game that the Chargers were “the most stupid team in the history of the league.” Just a few examples from this FUBAR of a game: Goodman leaving the ball on the ground after a catch and not being touched (this is not the NCAA, dude). Hester standing like a statue after Rivers’ swing pass is missed (they teach to go after the ball in this situation in Pop Warner). Garay’s idiotic unsportsmanlike penalty after a dead ball to extend the NE drive. Brown’s kick out of bounds to give NE the ball at the 40 after the Chargers pull within 3. Illegal procedure penalty on Vasquez (could not see who moved) on the potential tying FG that moved the ball back for a 50 yard kick (clank). There were many more, but these were just the highlights of the brain farts that the Bolts committed today. When you are in the top 3 in both offense and defense, but are 2-5, you must think that the team is very, very unlucky, or they are dumber than a bag of hammers. Or to put it more gently, they do not possess a high football I.Q. This is depressing as a Chargers fan, because it may be impossible to correct: “you just can’t fix stupid.”
