Like I said, his knee was never down. The fact that this wasn't challenged is absurd.

I thought it was a TD too

but since nobody paid it any attention, I figured I must’ve seen it wrong
But this is a TD and definitely should’ve been challenged. They couldn’t know that Tolbert would fumble, but this would’ve been overturned.
Nice run.

same here

i watched the game with my six years old son. i told him it was a touchdown.

Looks down to me

I don’t see it being overturned based on that angle; I hate it when coaches burn timeouts just because it’s close.

His knee never touches the ground! It lands on the defender!

I believe there was a closer, slower angle that showed it even better.

He

rolls over a defender, but when he starts to go down it sure looks like there is nothing between his knee and the ground. I don’t see how you can say anything with this view; you can’t see his knee at all at the critical moment.

agreed.

if there was a challenge and this was the only angle they had, we would have lost the challenge. continuing off of the same premise, norv was right not to challenge the call on the field.

Yep no point in changeling the play

Even if they replayed it on the jumbotron. How the about the team scoring when they are on the 1 inch line

IMO

How about giving the ball to the guy who just gained 9 yards

instead of the guy averaging negative yards per carry?

I agree

but unless there was a clear angle showing where Mathews’ knee ended and the Raider defender’s arm/shoulder began, I don’t think it would have been over turned. Should have been challenged regardless though.

AND THERE IT IS

thanks for posting this… i was looking everywhere for this video!!!! i thought that as soon as it happened! throw the stupid red flag… when points are involved, you need to challenge a play like that OR the next play you could fum… OH, SAD DAY !

Meh

You’re probably right, but if put in the position of being the “eye in the sky” for the Chargers, I probably would have agreed that it wouldn’t be worth the risk of reviewing it. I need those timeouts in a hostile environment. And besides, who can’t punch it in from the 1?? We just gained 5 on a run play. It’s not like we’re gonna fumble or something…………..

You obviously didn’t watch the Chiefs or Broncos games this week. They stopped their opponents numerous times on the 1.

If this made it 1st and 1, that’s one thing, but 3rd and 1?

but we’ve got Tolbert, who is nails in short yardage….

Norv said...

they were looking at the jumbo screen for a replay but Oakland stadium people didn’t play it (of course) so he didn’t challenge it. But what about the guys up in the booth?! Communication on this team needs to get better.

That is crazy...

Last year, Norv had Chud up in the booth specifically for assistance with game management and replay review. If he’s not there now, or something else has happened… HELP

Maybe next time Norv can Phone a Friend™ or Ask the Audience™

That is the major problem with replay -

The teams are at the mercy of the network showing it in a timely manner and with good angles to help the coaches make the call. If the game is Sunday Night or Monday Night there will most likely good coverage (more cameras), but SD v OAK was the bottom of the CBS coverage barrel! Network coverage and the choices of the TV director in the trailer can sometime affect the outcome of a game based on if a challenge is made. That is why replay is flawed and sometimes unfair (but still better than no replay at all).

by BoltFan58 on Oct 12, 2010 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it was a touchdown

but there was a point in the replay that made it look like his left knee may have touched the ground. If Norv had called for the replay I do not think that the call would have been overturned.

by JeromeB on Oct 12, 2010 12:53 PM PDT reply actions

to me not clear enough to reverse the call

But yeah his knee might not have touched, just not super clear cut view.

Now on the last fumble… How does the ball go forward if the defensive player is hitting PR backwards? Maybe a JFK conspiracy expert can explain that one to me. Because the only way I think that ball moves forward is if PR moves it forward.

by Trendsearcher on Oct 12, 2010 2:30 PM PDT reply actions

Different Standards for different teams

I agree, PR pass was just as much an incomplete pass and the one Gradkowski threw that looked more like a fumble. The official’s have to realize PR’s throwing motion isn’t the same as the typical NFL QB. PR’s throw was so obviously incomplete pass that all the players stopped playing except for Branch – who as just playing the odds that it would be called a fumble.

And, in the Monday night game, I recall a play identical to Mathews (TD) play and there was no discussion about it, it was a TD.

by charmaen on Oct 12, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It was a TD.

I saw this same BS TWICE during the Florida-Alabama game as well.

I

Was screaming at the top of my lungs to challenge this one glad I wasn’t the only one!!
