Time: 3:30pm PST

Come and join Sam and myself as we chat about the Chargers game against the Redskins, look ahead to the 2010 Chargers roster, preview the Wild Card Weekend (including picks!) and make our selection for MVP, Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year.  It should be a great way to kill 30+ minutes!

For those asking, the best way to listen is by going to the episode page.  From there, you should be able to listen to us live and also log in to the chat room to post questions that way.

If you want to call-in and make fun of our high-pitched voices, the number to call is (347) 327-9679.

Couldn’t agree more. We were actually funnier before the podcast started. Just slipped into sport talk radio habits I suppose. More personality, jokes and language that would make a sailor blush in the coming weeks.

What’s weird is that they biggest thing that held back the personality was the damn time limit. Next time it’s going to be 60 minutes (as a minimum) with less written-down topics. More time to freewheel. I think next week with Zach will be a blast, and I’m sure the next time Sam’s on we’ll have more fun.

Overall, great episode

I agree with most of what has been said already. It seemed like it was a bit too much “by the book” and topic transitions weren’t very smooth at all. I know it’ll get better with practice.

One question I had: I know it’s been mentioned on the site before, and you mentioned it again in the podcast, but it’s been said that the Jets are such a matchup nightmare for the Colts, but it hasn’t been mentioned they could be a nightmare for the Chargers too. What makes them a nightmare for the Colts, but not for the Chargers?

From my point of view the Chargers and Colts are very similar: explosive and dominating passing offense, poor running offense, relatively porous run defense, but decent passing defense.

So are they a tough matchup for the Chargers as well? Or are they not, and why not?

by creanium on Jan 5, 2010 10:07 AM PST reply actions

They are and they aren’t.

1. The Chargers can beat anyone if they get a lead, and typically don’t let teams back in the game. The Colts never seem to get a big lead, and when they do (see Broncos and Titans games), they always let that team back in the game.

2. The Chargers have more receiving weapons, which takes advantage of the Jets lack of depth in the secondary. Guys like Sproles and Tolbert out of the backfield could find huge holes in the middle of the field. The Colts almost never throw to their RBs.

3. The Colts offense typically struggles against 3-4 defenses. Particularly against 3-4 defenses with strong CBs. The Chargers offense, at least in 2009, has done probably done better against 3-4 defenses than 4-3 defenses and whether or not the team has a shutdown corner doesn’t really seem to matter. Let’s look at points scored per game against 3-4 defenses for the two teams:

Colts: 24.4 PPG (7 games). They scored less than 20 points 3 out of those 7 games.
Chargers: 29.1 (9 games). They did not score less than 20 in any of those 9 games.

Oh, and....

I forgot to mention why they were. It’s mostly just their strong running game.

A weak QB can beat the Colts, who don’t have much in the way of CBs and therefore leave open big holes when they blitz, but will have a much harder time going a full 60 minutes without making one or two mistakes that Cromartie, Jammer or Weddle can take advantage of.

by John Gennaro on Jan 5, 2010 11:22 AM PST up reply actions

Thank you, sir

Exactly what I wanted to know.

1. At first, I thought about the Chargers/Browns game or the Cowboys game. But then I remembered the defense does know how to clamp it down when necessary, or the offense can continue to drive down the field removing any chances of a comeback. I do know in the Cowboys game, letting them slowly drive down the field in the 4th quarter was basically the plan, as it ate up a ton of time on the clock.

2. I can’t say I’ve been following the Colts that closely this year, so thanks for that insight. How well or often do they run a screen? The Chargers seem to be one of the best at running the screen, so it’s nice that it’s always an option for this team if the receivers are well-covered downfield.

3. So basically defensively the Chargers and Jets match up very well to the Colts. I like the sound of that. Maybe for once going 4-3 wouldn’t solve everything.

by creanium on Jan 5, 2010 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

I have only seen a handful of games, but have never seen the Colts run a screen.

I just can't take the Jets seriously.

Rookie QB in the playoffs? Last year Matt Ryan was much better than Mark Sanchez has been this year, and he did not do well. Flacco didn’t have to do much of anything, and he wasn’t a turnover machine like Sanchez.

by Zach (maestro876) on Jan 5, 2010 2:08 PM PST up reply actions

The logic on the Jets should be something like this

Their defense is the best in the league. What has happened when the Chargers played defenses that were playing well? The great Chargers offense gets limited to point totals in the low 20s (Dolphins, Ravens, Cowboys and Giants games). If they are limiting the Chargers to that low of a point total, then they will not be forced to pass the ball and can use their offensive strength (running the ball) to pick up yards. However, as evidenced by a couple of our wins under these conditions, it’s not a bad scenario for the Chargers, just not a potentially good one since the Chargers were behind late in several of these games. Being behind late in these types of games requires a high level of execution by the offense against a defense that is also executing at a high level during the game as opposed to a shootout where the offense has to execute at a high level against a defense that has executed at a low level during the game. Therefore, they should scare us. To a certain extent.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

by Wonko on Jan 5, 2010 2:33 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Exactly

If Sanchez can make one or two plays a game, they’re a really dangerous team.

My thoughts on the podcast

I finally got to listen to the entire thing, and I think you guys did a GREAT job — considering you’re newbies! You should be proud of yourselves! Of course there were butterflies and a little cotton mouth. That’s to be expected.

I personally like the idea of “topics.” It keeps the pace up and limits any long-winded ramblings. I understand that it adds a little pressure to get your point across in a timely manner, and may undercut “personality,” but I really feel that “long and boring ramblings” are bigger detriments than “lack of personality.” And personalities will find ways to sneak in there even in short, pithy answers.

Keep up the good work!

There will always be topics, because otherwise I’ll panic and have nightmares about an hour of me going “umm….ummm…umm…” I think in the future, I may have broader topics and go with the flow of the conversation more. Also, having 60 minutes instead of 30 will help.

Just figure out who's leading the call

Just seemed to be a few silent points, where a question was asked, but they didn’t know who should take the answer first. John you should direct the question to a specific person, or have a designated order. Once responded to, the order goes back to the lead, then the lead defaults to the next person. I don’t know but figure out a system.
