Shawne Merriman Interviewed by Playboy Magazine
So, before his name was to forever be attached to Tila Tequila's, Shawne Merriman sat down with Playboy Magazine and answered 20 questions for them. It's a really good interview, and you can click here to read the entire thing (SFW, I think).
Highlights of the interview can be found after the jump.
On the hardest players to hit: "Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. They’re great quarterbacks, but they’re also very hard to get to. They get rid of the ball quick; they make the right decisions. It’s not always about your athletic ability. There are some guys in the league who have more athletic ability than both of them, but Brady and Manning are so good. It’s really hard to hit them."
On the hardest hit he’s delivered in the NFL: "When I knocked out Priest Holmes. That was probably the hardest hit, and from what I’ve heard, it was one of the loudest hits anybody has ever heard."
On running into Priest Holmes after the hit: "I saw him two years ago at – of all places – the Playboy Mansion…It was awkward. Because on the field, I’m a beast and a killer. I’m going to try to get you by any means necessary. But off the field, I’m not like that. When I saw him I didn’t even know what to say. I said, ‘What’s up?’"
On critics who have claimed his hits were illegal: "When I was in high school parents sent letters complaining that I shouldn’t be on the field with their sons, that I was an animal. It was hilarious. They stopped letting me hit in practice. Whenever we had contact drills, they’d send me over to another field, where I would practice hitting dummies.
On being hit by Jacksonville Jaguars’ Maurice Jones-Drew during the 2007 season: "He came out of the blue when I was looking at the quarterback, and Maurice is about eight inches shorter than me. The guy leveled my ass. A f*cking bowling ball is what he is, man. It wouldn’t have been such a big deal if it wasn’t me. You know, ‘Lights Out got lights out.’"
On being hazed as a rookie: "I had to take the whole team out for dinner. The tab was about $32,000…I felt sick. I talked to nobody for three or four days."
On his childhood: "I had a really troubled upbringing, and some of the unfortunate things that happened are why I’m able to do what I do now. I’m built for everything that’s taking place now."
On being a judge for Miss USA pageants: "I loved it. I made a joke about Donald Trump twisting my arm to get me to go there, but I probably would have gone out there for free…You’re around 50 hot chicks, and I’m single. It was fun for me."
On appearing in Keri Hilson’s "Knock You Down" video with Kanye West and Ne-Yo: "I told [Kanye] ‘I’ve never done a video. I can show you how to hit a quarterback, but I don’t know about videos.’ [Kanye] said ‘All you have to do is stand there and be Lights Out.’ So I just stood there, and it worked. It was a hot video."
On being considered for the Hall of Fame: "People don’t often talk about the Hall of Fame this early in a career, and it’s an honor even to be considered. But I don’t feel it’s right until you prove yourself in your game. Anybody can have one or two good years. Do I want to be considered the best that ever played the game? Of course. But at no point in time do I want to come across as being disrespectful."

Really?
No comments on this? This is right in the wheelhouse of the Merriman discussions that have been going on. Some points for discussion…
-Look how big his friggin’ arms are!
-Can you name another NFL player that has been in a rap video and hasn’t been trouble for his team at some point?
-I love that he made it a point to say he did not want to come across as disrespectful.
-He seems slightly disturbed about the person he turns into on the football field. I don’t know if that’s bad or good, but it sounds a lot like Lawrence Taylor.
-One of my favorite things about Shawne is that he never seems to dodge any questions. The fact that he answered the MJD one attests to that.

I read it,
I guess i just didn’t find it as relevant as you did.
-The rap video with Kanye and Ney-O or whatever, has Merriman in it for like .75 seconds, basically just a flash of his pic when the lyrics say “high school football star” or something like that.
-The MJD question was cool. He answered sincerely saying that everybody gets whomped at least once in their career. MJD is small and can came out of nowhere. MJD is a powerful and small like a “bowling ball” and caught him off guard.
- His hit on Priest Holmes that broke his spine was the hardest hes ever hit somebody in the NFL. Seeing him at the playboy mansion was kinda funny. AWKWARD TURTLE.

glad to finally hear his thoughts on the MJD hit
Have a friend who’s a Jags fan, and he’s beat me over the head with that every time I mention Merriman. Good to see 56 man up and say he got beat.
Also interesting
Two of his houses were burned down when he was growing up. One was because his babysitter witnessed a murder, and someone tried to extinguish them by killing her with fire. The other was because of a candle.
Gives some good insight into his actions following the SD fires.
Didn’t dodge the steroid question, kinda, just admitted that he would have to deal with it later when being considered for HOF. Plans on showing he is able to do the same thing now and in the future.

Yeah, the story about him being in the house when it got firebombed was interesting. It definitely cleared up why he was so charitable after the fires.
I thought it was kindof odd how he wasn’t the least bit regretful about what happened to Priest Holmes. He basically laughed it off, saying that he has knocked people out his entire career.

I only saw the hit live
can anyone find any video? I didn’t have much luck looking last night.

I live in the DC area
The tribulations SM grew up with, including the story of the fires was featured prominently on the local news and in the Washington Post in the build up to that season’s draft. That, along with his performance at MD really gave me strong feelings for him as a player, and a person. I was hoping the Chargers would get a crack at him, but thought (like Shawne did) that Dallas would snap him up the pick before.
Demarcus Ware has been great, but I’d rather have Shawne.
This is a young guy who I think has a pretty good head on his shoulders.
He’s obviously charismatic, funny, and enthusiastic about whats going on in his life right now.He doesn’t have a problem donating money for charitable causes, and he enjoys being young and having notoriety on the football field.
He’s enjoying all the benefits off success that comes with being a recognized “celebrity”.I know alot of people don’t like that word but his life is that of one,and yet he can’t enjoy it too much. It’s a part of the lifestyle that comes with being young, rich and being a recognizable figure in sports.Especially in this era, where it’s a little bit more acceptable to be so.
He’s in a difficult place right now because he’s being scrutinized more closely due to this recent incident with Tila Tequila. But I think he will be a good player on the football field this season and the others to come.He has that hunger to become a legend and to help bring his team a championship. This was a very telling interview about his personal side,it let everyone know that he’s intense and humble at the same time.
NEVER MISS A GAME,WHETHER BY BEING THERE OR WATCHING AT HOME,FO SHO!!!

New reader!
Hey, I just discovered this blog and as a huge San Diego Charger fans, I’m psyched to read all the latest news and rants about all things San Diego Charger related! :)
Sorry for the general, nit-picky comment, but can you guys minimize the phrase “after the jump” or “after the break” at the end of summary text? I find it really annoying when blogs do that. I plain old “Read more here” or “continue reading here” seems more reasonable to me. :) Again sorry for the silly request—just thought I’d chime in.
Keep up the great work! GO CHARGERS!!!
