CJ Spillman: The Latest UDFA

With 8 draft picks this year, CJ Spillman made the 53 man-roster as the latest UDFA.  AJ Smith has had at least 1 UDFA make the team since '03 and that player usually lasts 2 years on the squad which is pretty impressive.

'03-Dielman, Gates, Cooper, Osgood, Cesaire

'04-Floyd, Welker(I know he was cut, but I'll give AJ credit for finding him)

'05-Camarillo

'06-Gregory, Gordon, Tucker

'07-Applewhite

'08-Tolbert

'09-Spillman

If the UDFA makes the team, AJ usually gets it right and that player should contribute something for the year. Spillman did make some coverage mistakes in the pre-season but he was a legit hitter and someone who was around the football. Special teams is were he will make his mark but I see a bright future for the kid.

I think Applewhite was practice squad in 2007, and started there in 2008.

Still, he was active plenty last year and looks to be again this year. So your point probably still holds in regards to him.

Actually

it seems that Chargers nearly cut Spillman Sunday morning after he made the team, but then changed their minds.

Well...

The possibility still remains that he could be cut and placed on the practice squad in favor of another cornerback (I believe). I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping Spillman and only 3 cb’s, but I still have a feeling that AJ is looking around for a 4th cb.

I think the author has his days wrong

he says the roster was cut to 53 on Sunday:

The Chargers’ final house cleaning came on Sunday, when 21 players were released to finalize the 53-man roster

I think he means Saturday, and that CJ Spillman was nearly cut then, not after he had made the 53 man. Which makes sense, he was definately a bubble guy, but I don’t think they thought about cutting him by Sunday.

That makes more sense.
