San Diego Chargers Sign Eight Player to Practice Squad
The San Diego Chargers have announced the eight players they signed to their practice squad after cutting them yesterday. Unfortunately, Charly Martin isn't on the list.
- Gary Banks, WR
- Darry Beckwith, ILB
- Simeon Castille, CB
- Corey Clark, OT/OG
- Andre Coleman, DE
- James Holt, OLB
- Billy Latsko, FB
- Ryan McDonald, C
The two big surprise names on this list for me are Latsko and McDonald. With decent depth at each position, and young depth, I didn't see any reason to keep them around. I guess the Chargers have their reasons.

Uhhh, I wonder why Charly Martin is missing...
Anyone have an idea as to why he may be missing? Is he already starting his presidential campaign for 2012?

damn
really wanted martin to stick.
was surprised coleman made it over keith grennan who looked much more dominant.
and agree on latsko and mcdonald
i didnt think mcdonald was gonna make it past the 75 man cut.
he does have a badass mustache at least.

I like Beckwith and Holt on the PS
I think both will eventually be contributors. Holt really looked good getting pressure (against the other scrubs). I think both will benefit by putting on some weight and building NFL bodies.

Beckwith
Looked really good in that last preseason game. Latsko had some nice plays too, but I’m surprised we would hang on to a fullback.

we are a little light on active OL
we only have 8, so I think that is why we are a little OL heavy on the PS
I don’t get the FB thing.

I would love Bush
I was disappointed when trade rumours fizzled out last season. He’d be the ideal power back we’re looking for. Big, powerful, fast and a good receiver.

Beckwith should be a nice project.
Hopefully he can be a contributor at some point.
Greg Maddux for manager.

why did AJ keep BUSTer Davis?
I’m dissapointed about charly martin. He may not be a pro bowler, but he is a football player. I’m also surprised that AJ refuses to give up on BUST-er Davis. He didn’t show me much during the preseason. I think he will be cut sometime during the season. Just my opinion.

AJ Smith kept a former first round pick who is still quite young.
Charly Martin is 25 and Buster Davis is only 23. Buster is faster and has proven to be effective against better competition (the SEC) than Charly.
Davis’ problem is not his talent. He showed during the preseason that he has the speed, the hands and even runs good routes. His problem is that thusfar in his pro career he’s been unable to stay healthy. It’s not rare for a young player to get over that problem as his body could still be growing. The Chargers are hopeful that he’ll develop and learn how to stay on the field.
Even if you thought Charly played better in the preseason (I think he had 1 good game and 3 poor ones), there’s no telling if he’d be able to stay healthy either. Considering the team has more invested in Buster (in terms of money and years) and there’s more potential there, Davis was the right choice.
The team will likely give Buster this entire season to figure it out. If he cannot make it through the season, the 2010 preseason may be his last chance to stay on the roster.

Im not sure about the whole better competition thing...
Charly played much better in the preseason than Buster did, in the sense that he played WR and special teams, both quite well. I highly doubt that we have gotten to the point where the SEC is better than the NFL, southern rednecks may disagree though…
It is just my opinion that I would rather take a productive player that wasnt from a high profile school, over a first rounder that is from a well known school and just gets injured all of the time…At the same rate, i do believe that Buster should get one more year; but i am not confident in his abilities at this point

Preseason stats
Charly Martin – 7 catches, 88 yards
Buster Davis – 5 catches, 102 yards
Buster also was typically playing against second-stringers while Charly was playing against third-stringers. And yes, I consider starting in the SEC to be playing with tougher competition than playing against third-stringers in the NFL preseason.
Charly’s first game, against Seattle, he caught 5 passes for 67 yards. In his other three games he didn’t catch more than 1 pass. He brought very little to the table as a special teams player.
Part of the reason Buster is still on the team is because he’s the first rounder, but that doesn’t mean he was chosen over Charly Martin just because he’s a first-rounder from a big school. It’s because he has better skills (speed, hands, route-running) than Charly Martin, has been in the system for years and has far greater potential.
There’s a reason why there’s only one Wes Welker in the league, and it’s because players like that typically aren’t good enough or can’t stay healthy in the NFL. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that Charly Martin is a potential starter or even slot receiver in the NFL. The guy had one good game and a good article about him in the UT.

Martin didn't get the game reps after the first game
It seems like Banks and Martin have similar size (Martin might be a bit smaller) and skill sets. They must have seen more in Banks. Either way they can’t load up the PS with any single position.
Although I would have given Latsko’s spot to Martin. Keeping Tolbert gave us plent of depth at FB.

Charly was a beast with West Texas A&M
Of course, he was playing second-tier defenses even by college standard, but look at the line from his senior year:
95 receptions
1867 yards
22 TDs
Let’s contrast that with Buster’s college stats when we drafted him out of LSU:
56 receptions
836 yards
4 TDs
Remember— this was an offense with Dwayne Bowe and Early Doucet, which may explain the significantly lower numbers… but Martin had better stats than any two of the above combined.

But can you really attribute that to the stat difference?
A thousand yards, forty catches, and EIGHTEEN touchdowns more? Charly’s going to latch on somewhere, but I don’t know that he’ll ever become more than a capable #2.
