I guess it's alright

I’d be more comfortable with another DT, but I really like having Spillman on the team.

I didn't like Spillman's play in the pre-season (particularly Friday against SF)

It seemed like he was making a lot of the mistakes. Arguably he has the second toughest job on the field after QB. So maybe he just needs more time to learn this system.

Byrd signed a 4 year contract and is on the non-football injury IR

Hughes also signed a contract and is on the IR with a knee injury.

I'm a little concerned with..

the depth at DE, not sure about this Travis Johnson guy which just leaves us with Vaughn Martin. then again we also have Ogemdi Nwagbuo who could fill in at DE so that makes me feel a little better.

by tonik on Sep 5, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't worry about Johnson.

He’s a physical freak and isn’t expected to be a regular starter. This year is only technically a contract year if there’s a CBA, but even if not, he’ll have RFA coming and will probably only yield a 1st-round tender. If he plays like he’s worth it, he might get a deal. So if you’re worried about his motor, don’t let it get to your head.

Evidence of Davis's Vampirism

… can be found in the funny way his sharp fangs make him pronounce things. For example, he sets out to pick up Lorenzo Neal, and ends up with Oren O’Neal. Obviously the consequence of a speech impediment that makes it difficult to close his mouth.

12:00 Noon Eastern Tomorrow

is when teams are allowed to start signing players to their practice squad.

And of course, its possible this 53 man roster is not the roster that will go into the Oakland game. If they find someone cut by another team they like, they could add them directly to the roster and cut one of the guys above

by BFTB_zach on Sep 7, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just a thought

Chargers cut a few veterans, maybe this has some forward thinking attached to it. Veteran backups usually have to be resigned or replaced after the season. Chargers have a lot of free agents coming up. Putting the CBA aside for a second, having a lot of (cheap) backups that are under contract will help the Chargers focus on either resigning their other guys or using their draft picks to cover the losses from those potential FAs.

Either that, or A.J. just want to be young with upside instead of old, safe and creaky. That does sound like him.

Could both be true? Am I just babbling?

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

Vested Veterans

I’ve heard some talk too that once a veteran becomes ‘vested’, if they are on the opening day roster, the team has to pay their entire salary, even if they are cut part way through the season. I’m not sure how many seasons one has to play to become vested though.

Was it a factor in any of these cases? Hard to say. But with a difficult economy and home games not selling out, I don’t know if one can completely rule it out.

I had heard one reason the Raiders wouldn’t keep Garcia was because he was a vested veteran, and keeping him around meant guaranteeing his salary for the season.

Interesting point. There is talent there too, but if they shave some salary on the non-starters it might leave more to sign McNeil, VJ, et al.

I’m glad they found a way to keep Bennett and Tolbert. Our special teams won’t suffer, and we have an actual running back to take over if LT or Sproles get hurt.

6 RBs, wow

I’m surprised they kept so many RBs while shorting the DL. I’ll be curious to see how this affects the rotation of the DL during a game.

by CoastalBronco on Sep 5, 2009 5:54 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Waiver wire

I have a feeling we will be making a move at some point for another CB, DL or OL because we lack the depth at all 3 positions but figuring out AJ is near impossible (how about trading a LB or WR for a need position?).

I don’t recall AJ making any moves before during this time to grab someone for a position on the 53-man roster so it probably won’t happen – although I’d like to replace a few of the guys we have with some that are available.

Some good pick-ups to me would be Marcus McCauley-CB, Tony Pashos-OT or Paul Spicer-DE.

Mike Tobert shouldn't be on the team

While he’s a good special teams contributor, six RBs is way excessive— if not for Bennett’s strong preseason I’d prefer to drop the axe on him too.

I think the team may be willing to part with a wide reciever for a corner or defensive tackle.
DT might not even be a problem to address through trade; Terdell Sands was waived by the Raiders and Tim Crowder was given his walking papers by the Broncos.

Following up on that idea, the #1 guy I’d have on the trade block is Chris Chambers— his number is pretty near up, he hasn’t produced to expectations, and he wasn’t worth the 2nd round pick we traded it for (granted, we only could’ve gotten Earl Bennett, Dexter Johnson, Early Doucet, Harry Douglas, Mario Manningham… still, he’s produced far too little). I could see trading Chambers for a player of, say, Cortland Finnegan’s or Leodis McKelvin’s caliber. Maybe with a bit of a push, Cason will start to blossom in the nickel corner slot… he’ll just be hitting his prime when Jammer begins to age.

"Everything I say, is calculated, appropriated, written and arranged in Feng Shui."

by StrangeBroP25 on Sep 5, 2009 10:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not all talent vs. talent

At this point, Chambers is nearly untradeable because of how much money he’s owed this year. Plus, the fact that his contract is up at the end of the year hurts the trade possibility. Why would a team trade a draft pick for him when he could walk away after the season?

Plus, as you’ve said, he’s no longer worth the second rounder SD sent to Miami for him. The guy’s you’re talking about are number 1 cornerbacks, stars in the league. I they’re tradeable at all, which is doubtful, it would have to be for a 1st rounder and then some. A 1st rounder, plus Legedu Naanee, plus probably something else MIGHT get you a shot at either one of them. Probably not though. Teams don’t go trading away corners that good. You have to find them.

So let’s say the Chargers do trade for someone like that. Where the heck does he play? Is Cortland Finnegan the Chargers 4th corner? Does he push Cromartie off the field to be the second? Or Cason off the field to be the nickel corner? If the Chargers are going to add a cornerback, it’s going to be someone who was just cut by another team.

I want Jammer to age like Rod Woodson. I want Cason and Cromartie to eventually be the starting CBs and Jammer to turn into the starting SS. That would be really cool.
