Nice!
I guess that means Green is in too.

Possibly
Could be Dombrowski.
I’m curious about Gartrell.

Good point
Everything points to Gatrell being safe.

wooooooooohooooooooo!!
SO GLAD Bennett made the squad!!
sad for scott and shelton – today is going to be rough losing 22 guys who have been here and worked so hard for so long.

That means these guys made the team...
Ogemdi Nwagbuo beat out Ian Scott, Corey Clark beat our LJ Shelton

Huge sigh of relief
if LT goes down there’s no doubt Bennett steps in, hopefully the give him a few carries even if LT stays healthy

Forney gone
Vasquez the starter for the season, is my guess.

Wow
All the jabbering about who would get cut and the Chargers go in a completely different direction.

Surprised with the cut of Forney
I like the potential of Vasquez but it seems a little surprising to not have a veteran behind him
by TJBOLT on Sep 5, 2009 3:10 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm wondering
If Forney’s injury is enough to discourage other teams from picking him up immediately. So, essentially, if Vazquez has troubles, Forney may still be there healing up and ready to come back.

Anyone else surprised by Ian Scott?
I thought he looked like a serviceable back-up NT.

I am
I guess Nwagbuo is the backup NT now?

I get the feeling
That if Jamal goes down, they’ll rely on some sort of rotation to replace him. It’s not really going to be on the shoulders of one guy like the depth chart would leave you to believe.

if Jamal goes down...
lets face it, they are in a world of hurt. But the other possibility would be to use more 4-3. Not exclusively going 4-3, but using more of it. That is Rivera’s background from Chicago anyway. Not sure if they have the personnel to pull that off, but maybe a possibility

Spillman made it
No way they kept 6 safeties. Ellison gone?
I really like Spillman by the way, happy he’s being kept.

Still
I was thinking 5 safeties and 3 corners. 6 safeties and 3 corners seems outrageous.

Yes!
I love Spillman, I was thinking he might be a goner.

Castille
I hope he makes it to the practice squad. I like what I saw from him.

Just 3 Corners what's going on???
I guess Paul Oliver is going to get plenty of PT at his old college position CB. It’s the only way that makes sense.
Even then what are they going to do about depth???
by TJBOLT on Sep 5, 2009 3:31 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
No depth
The Chargers hardly ever play with 4 corners. When they do, the 4th CB will be either Oliver or Gregory. Oliver was a very, very good corner in college.

I think
It only matters if there are injuries.
A lot of times the Chargers have played with a S as the nickel or dime. For example, Weddle did it his rookie year. I think this partly shows that the Chargers are really confident with their top 3 and don’t have to worry about replacing anyone for ineffectiveness (which is rare, most teams have very little confidence in their 2nd or 3rd CBs, especially their 3rd). I’m comfortable with this setup, unless injuries mount to Cro, Jammer or Cason, but that would be problematic even if we had a 4th CB on the roster.

Yeah, that doesn't worry me.
I think we’re looking at a really good season. Cutting Shelton means that they think Dombrowski is ready to back up McNeill. Cutting Forney means they think Vasquez is ready to step up right away and Green is NFL-worthy. I hope they’re right. Similarly, we have a lot banking on Martin, Nwagbuo and Travis Johnson.
As far as 3 corners go, so much the better: I’d rather have to scheme around the good players I have than plug in a bad player who fits my scheme. Paul Oliver can be the backup nickel, as Steve Gregory should be the starting SS soon if he hasn’t already locked it down. Hart’s a very worthwhile backup, and is totally worth keeping around, but if you have to start him you know you have a soft spot.
So 3 QBs, 9 OLs, 6 WRs, 3 TEs, 3 CBs, 5 Safeties, 9 LBs, 6 DLs, K, P, LS … that’s 47. With Tomlinson, Sproles, Hester… that’s a spot for Bennett, Tolbert, and Johnson!

Oops. I got the final 53 a little off.
3 QBs, 9 OLs, 6 WRs, 3 TEs, 3 CBs, 5 Safeties, 9 LBs, 6 DLs, K, Robopunter, LS. Just being precise.

there’s 6 safeties.

Will Castille
Get picked up? It seems like they could stow him on the PS maybe and pull him up if needed.

From the looks of it
I doubt any one we’ll cut will get picked up elsewhere. The Chargers will get to pick and choose who they want on the PS. I’m willing to bet that at least on them will be a CB.

My guess as to the PS (or other teams):
C. Clark, K. Grennan, E. Bakhtiari, R. Jackson, C. Martin, K. Sperry, S. Castille, D. Beckwith. Billy Latsko can get an NFL job, but we don’t need any fullbacks, thanks.
by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Sep 5, 2009 3:54 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I like it
although I doubt Bakhtiari is involved. too many LBs on the roster.

cuts
Friday was a very telling game. The cuts made were the right ones. We’re going to have a couple of new stars this season. Johnson on offense (with all those RB’s we’re going to have a great ground game) and Applewhite on defense. Applewhite reminds me of a young Seau. This team is looking very promising.
by Debie4sure on Sep 5, 2009 8:32 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Debie,
First, welcome to BFTB.
Second, although I agree that Johnson and Applewhite looked good, I think you may be overstating it a bit. Keep in mind that the plays these guys were making were against the backups and 3rd string players on SF (who is not very good and doesn’t have much depth). They’re both young players and they’ll have to continue to grow in practice, but they’ll probably only have limited time on the field in 2009.

We're cutting it a bit tight on the OL
to suit my tastes. I’m OK with the S/CB mix as Oliver was a CB.
I would have kept 9 OL, with Shelton the 9th, at the expense of Osgood.
Glad that we kept both Bennett & Tolbert.

Applewhite is listed as an OLB correct?
what are the chances that they move him inside? Say, if Burnett or Cooper gets hurt?

If Burnett or Cooper gets hurt, Dobbins steps in. Applewhite would be the backup-backup-backup at ILB.
