Acee's 53-man Roster Projection
Kevin Acee, our favorite beat reporter, has posted what he's guessing the 53-man will look like Saturday after final cut-downs. Take a look:
The final 53
By Kevin Acee
September 3, 2009, 10:20 a.m.
I'm not in the meetings, but I do talk to a lot of people, and I have been to every practice, and I've watched plays in the preseason games more than anyone ever should.
So here is my final 53-man roster:
OL Corey Clark, Jeromey Clary, Kris Dielman, Kynan Forney, Nick Hardwick, Marcus McNeill, Scott Mruczkowski, L.J. Shelton, Louis Vasquez.
I think this comes down to Corey Clark, Brandyn Dombrowski and Tyronne Green. Clark's versatility gives him the edge. I wouldn't be totally shocked (just a little) if Shelton were let loose. He wasn't great in the first two preseason games, and he's hurt. Dombrowski and Greene make the practice squad. QBs Philip Rivers, Billy Volek, Charlie Whitehurst.
, RB Jacob Hester, Gartrell Johnson, Darren Sproles, Mike Tolbert, LaDainian Tomlinson.
Michael Bennett deserves to be on the roster. And it makes a lot of sense fo a team that believes it's Super Bowl-bound to keep that kind of insurance. But Tolbert helps them more (on special teams) if LT stays healthy. TE Antonio Gates, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kris Wilson.
WR Chris Chambers, Buster Davis, Malcom Floyd, Vincent Jackson, Legedu Naanee, Kassim Osgood.
DL Luis Castillo, Jacques Cesaire, Travis Johnson, Vaughn Martin, Ian Scott, Jamal Williams.
I think you have to keep Scott over Ogemdi Nwagbuo for the experience factor. Ryon Bingham looks headed to IR. LB Antwan Applewhite, Kevin Burnett, Stephen Cooper, Tim Dobbins, Larry English, Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips, Brandon Siler, Jyles Tucker.
CB Antoine Cason, Simeon Castille, Antonio Cromartie, Quentin Jammer.
Just because Castille is on the roster Saturday afternoon doesn't mean he is Sunday or Monday or ... Safeties Kevin Ellison, Steve Gregory, Clinton Hart, Paul Oliver, Eric Weddle.
Ellison has earned the spot, and he was a draft pick. C.J. Spillman is on the PS. Long snapper David Binn
Kicker Nate Kaeding
Punter Mike Scifres
Looks about right to me. I found it interesting that he thinks they'll PS Green. I was under the impression that multiple teams were interested in him, and there's a strong possibility he'll be signed away from the practice squad. Perhaps they expected him to be further along than he is and hoped he could beat someone else out.

Agreed
I think he’s right on, but I think Bennett might be able to earn a spot still.

All this talk about Tolbert helping more on special teams
Do we think he’ll be active week to week?
We will have 8 guys inactive every week:
1. Whitehurst (emergency QB)
2. one offensive lineman (8 active)
3.one of the WRs
4. one of the DL (5 active)
5. one of the OLB (applewhite or tucker)
6. one of the safeties
7. gartrell
8. and tolbert?
Any other way this works out? In game, if LT gets hurt, hester splits the load with sproles and Manumaleuna or Wilson moves to FB.

The same issue would arise if you replace Tolbert with Bennett.

true
but the argument for Tolbert over Bennett is that he provides value on special teams even if LT isn’t injured (I guess Bennett isn’t that good on special teams). But if Tolbert is inactive week to week, he isn’t providing any value. The only time he would be activated is if there is any injury to another RB, which is really when you would want Bennett over Tolbert.
of course, trying to guess who is going to be inactive week to week is even riskier than trying to guess who is going to make the 53 man.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having listened to it. More I think about this I think it's a fair point.
I asked Acee about it in his mailbag. Let’s see if he gives us a response.

Couldn't Wilson (the 3rd TE) be inactive?
Plus injuries usually start to take care of who is active and inactive.

I thought about that too.
But he was active both playoff games, where we used all three tight ends. I imagine he could be active some weeks and inactive the next.
The team could also have 2 inactive DL or OL, or even decide to activate all 6 WRs.

plus, we use lots of 2TE sets
only having two active TEs would jeprodize those.
I’m pretty much guessing at the inactives, but it does seems like Tolbert would be on the edge of being inactive every week.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Sep 3, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Last time I checked
2 TE sets only required 2 TEs not 3. If one got hurt and the 3rd was inactive, then guess what? You don’t use those plays. Pretty simple. If you are really worried about an injury wiping out a certain portion of your playbook, then you don’t deactivate him. If you aren’t (which may happen some weeks) then you do.
I guess I’m sort of agreeing in that Tolbert would be on the edge, but there are some options here that could improve his chances of not being inactive. It’s not as inflexible as it first appeared. And I still think that week-to-week injuries would change who was inactive.

Tolbert/Bennet over Gartrell
I just don’t see why everyone is high on Gartrell. Yes he is a power running back, but in any of the pre-season games when he slammed into his would be tackler, did he ever BREAK that tackle, or even push the tackler back at ALL? I didn’t see a single carry meeting those qualifications. Beyond that, he’s slow. What good is a slow, power running back that doesn’t break tackles, or even push back his woudl be tackler?
They think he's going to develop, and be helpful down the road.

Not comfortable with roster if LT gets hurt
On a season that is so important can’t see the chargers pinning hopes on a combo of Gartrell and Sproles if LT gets hurt. The combo of Bennett and Sproles just makes more sense I just think Bennett at this point is a better player than Gartrell. So for me the question is do you keep Tolbert or Gartrell.
Considering Kris Wilson & Manumaleuna have some experience playing fullback, I’m just more comfortable keeping Bennett than Tolbert.
that doesn’t make me a whole lot more comfortable :-)

Hester is a better FB than Tolbert. I think his size makes people not believe this.

I'll take Spillman over Hart
Young safeties with speed that hit like bricks are a worthy commodity, Hart’s playing time just seems to be going down, I’ll admit I’m not biggest fan.
If the chargers are certain nobody will sign Spillman to a roster and they can sneak him into the practice squad I can understand. I just think its a matter of time before Gregory and Ellison take over most if all the SS duties.
Young safeties don't know shit
And get burned on a regular basis. No thanks. At least Hart gets turnovers.

This is true.
I believe that, in a good year, Hart is a slightly above league average safety. In 2007, when we had a good pass rush and he wasn’t hurt, Hart had 6 picks. That was good for second on the team, behind only Cromartie.

Yes
that goes for Spillman and Ellison.

Gattrell is worse than Eldra Buckley
He’s at best a serviceable NFL running back. AJ blew the pick. AJ fell in love with one bowl game performance - Gatrell isn’t that fast and when he tries to run over people in the NFL, he gets stood up. He should have drafted Glen Coffee and waited on Vaughn Martin or should have gotten Javon Ringer. I hope he gets Jahvid Best out of Cal to replace LT. AJs gargantuan ego will prevent him from cut5ing Gatrell over Michael Bennett who clearly seems more valuable.
At least Al Davis isn't running my team's drafts.

Coffee was gone by time they picked in the 3rd round.

There are multiple issues with this post
I’d be willing to bet that A.J. wasn’t even the one who was Gartrell’s biggest backer. The Chargers have college scouts including John Spanos and I bet it was more his call than A.J.’s.
