San Diego Chargers Defeat Miami Dolphins 23-13
Whew, so that was a bit of a whirlwind. Because of a prior engagement, I was only able to see the first quarter and the fourth quarter (plus the end of the third) live. I'll completely re-watch the game before posting the Bolts & Dolts tomorrow.
Based on what I saw, I was right. The defense did just enough and the offense could not be matched by Miami. The offensive line looked terrible, but Philip Rivers took what shots he could and made huge throws downfield when he could.
I heard the Steelers again lost to an inferior opponent in the Bengals. It seems they're really struggling without Troy Polamalu. If he's out against the Chargers next week, Norv's crew will have a chance at eventually getting to 6-1. That'll put the team in a good spot when players like LaDainian Tomlinson and Nick Hardwick are getting healthy again.
So, BFTB faithful, what did you think of the game? Who belongs on Bolts & Dolts tomorrow?

I said it...
somethin special was gonna happen. They’re shaking the slowness part out and they had the swagger that they needed. Aside from the redzone issues almost everyone stepped up and had a vast improvement after that fumble.
Rivers 92million Quarterback to me and some might agree is the most complete Quarterback in the NFL right now. and he takes all the sacks and bounces right back up like he just got a little scrape on hisknee… brushes his shoulders off and Makes plays! Of course it also breathes on his Marriages w/ Jackson, Floyd and Gates oh yeah let me throw in Naanee in that mix.
Anyone know where Hart or Cromartie jolted off too??? swear they were starting…
Sleep well all…

Rivers IS the best in the NFL
but he needs a run game.
The freaking SAINTS have a run game.

will take the win
But, if Pennington stays healthy, we may have lost
Decent showing by D
I wish Norv would run less predictably; more draws
Red Zone is a mess; seems like an area we could easily improve; better, more imaginative play calls

They called two plays in the red zone that should have netted touchdowns, but Rivers overthrew one and underthrew the other.

i hope you are right
I don’t have my DVR going, so could not look for open players, but the dismal success rate in the last two games is worrisome. So, the plays have been good but PR is messing up? Not been his history, so why suddenly now?
It is a consistent knock on Turner; not finishing drives. I hope it goes away, but we easily win the Baltimore game if 1 of the 3 FG is a TD. Then we would have been kicking a short to medium FG to win at the end instead of getting stuffed at the end.
Miami kept this close despite not having a great running game in the second half and playing a much inferior replacement QB. We’re 2-0 against teams with bad QB’s (in this game for the second half) and 0-1 against competent QB’s. Steelers will not let us win if we do a lot of inside the 10 FGs.

The trouble in the red zone
has to do with the defense knowing we cannot run the ball and dedicating 7-8 guys to zone coverage.

Exactly. The line can’t run block with Vasquez and Hardwick both out and the receivers can’t get open against 8 guys in coverage. That’s not the fault of the playcalling.

Dolphins lost that game
more than we can claim to have won it. Had we beat the Ravens I would have called that game a real win. The o-line is going to get $92PR hurt before midseason.

One Bolt and one Dolt, just for your consideration
BOLTS: Eric Weddle. He was all over the field (7 tackles I think) and without that pick-six we still could’ve lost. By the playoffs last year I was calling for this to be his breakout, Pro-Bowl-caliber year, and I just might be right.
DOLTS: The officiating crew. Holy smokes, it was like the Baltimore game redux; I counted two uncalled delay-of-game penalties, two uncalled DPIs, and at least 3 uncalled holds on Jake Long alone.

Dolts
1. Can’t believe I’m saying this: Dielman. At least the Ski’s have an excuse. 2. Anybody on the front 8 that is supposed to be able to tackle a runner. The yards after contact for our D must be abysmal. 3. Did Hester play? I saw his number flash by a couple times. Is he hurt or just maxing out as “just a guy”?
We have got to muster a ground game. Getting a gimpy LT back is not going to save us. Starts w/ O line. I cringe every time they run a 180lbs (soaking wet) scatback up the middle. Darren is way too valuable for that. Bennett looks like he might have a little something if the O line wasn’t getting pushed around. Can’t wait to hear what Clary has to say on his weekly XXRadio Scott&BR interview. (Last weeks interview was very enlightening. He said Mooch should have picked up Ray Lewis on the last play.) Hopefully those guys are embarrassed enough that they’ll be hopping mad in Pitt.
Lots of Bolts: PR for President, receiving corp, Sproles, corners, and a career game for Weddle. Did we finally contain a TE?
Miami clearly regressed even before Pennington got hurt. (I’ll bet that’s it for him career-wise.) Beautiful first drive but they couldn’t keep it up as Rivera adjusted. Whole different ball game if Pennington stays in (but I was still projecting us to win a close one – PR is just too good).
Bust out the Palomalu vodoo dolls. If the O line and D line revive their pride we should expect to be in that game to the very end. Who’s more clutch: Rothlesberger or PR?

Rec'd
and a belated “Welcome to BFTB” (sorry, I’ve been ill)
Nailed it all around. The only thing the offense has to be careful of is the defense knowing that it’s a pass when Sproles is in or a run when Bennett is in.

Agreed and rec'd.
Who’s still on the RB market, particularly as UDFA’s? At this point I would mortgage a kidney for even a moderately powerful back (this is pie-in-the-sky, but I think Chambers for Jonathan Stewart would be the greatest coup in trade history).
Several instances today I was practically ready to run up to AJ’s box, break down the door, and kick him straight in the ass for waiving Gartrell Johnson.
(Totally unrelated: I didn’t get a “welcome to BTFB”… :-P)

Welcome to BFTB
I thought I gave it to you a while back and complimented your signature as well. Perhaps not.
If the Panthers traded Jonathan Stewart (a player on the ride on a cheap contract) for Chris Chambers (a player on the decline making HUGE money), it’d be so lopsided the Commissioner would have to stop it from going through.

Another reason why he's not that great a quarterback.
He holds on to the ball too long and generates too many negative plays.

Roethlisberger running for his life is entirely due to his holding onto the ball way too long. He gets very solid protection.

kudos to weddle
I have blasted weddle in the past, so I will give him a big thumbs up for todays game. But, the O line still scares me to death. Rivers is just one sack away from being out for who knows how long. Volek has looked good when he’s played. Who’s more clutch, ben or phillip? I’d have to say ben based on past performances although phillip is close. But, ben is a big boy and can take the pounding better than rivers. Since the steelers lost today, they will probably be out for blood next week. And, we have never won a regular season game in Pittsburgh. If troy is still out, that should help a little. It wouldn’t surprise me if LT sits out another week to give his ankle time to heal. After all, they have the bye the following week. Sure hope it gives players a chance to get healthy.

Just watched some of the game on DVR
Defensive Bolts: Kevin Burnett (Led Team with 9 Tackles 1 sack), Eric Weddle (6 Tackles, INT TD), Hat Tips to Nwabugo, Boone(deflected pass in red zone), English, and Cesaire.
Dolts: Nobody really sticks out in my mind which is a good thing. Merriman stop getting hurt you jerk.
Offensive Bolts: PR17, Malcom Floyd, Vincent Jackson Antonio Gates
Dolts: Chris Chambers 0 Catches, Not really a dolt but I wish Norv would even out Sproles’ and Bennett’s carries until LT gets back, you know what is going to happen when one of them is in; plus with a late lead you can’t run out the clock by running Darren Sproles up the middle. We need a bigger back to grind out the clock and let Sproles do his thing in space.

Bolt of the Game (Defense): Kevin Burnett

i figured it out
Norv, in his press conference, stated “they are a big pass play team”. that’s why they are having so many problems in the redzone. anything under 20 yards, and he doesn’t know what to do. as far as the run goes ,he’s got one call,“run it up the middle”. as i watched the game darren seemed very irritated with that call. even bennett bounced outside, because there was nothing there.
all the positive vibes were killing me, so i thought i’d let the air out of the room.
peace out

VJ
because they’re not going to pay Sproles. This is proving that his value is as a kick returner and not a future starting RB. Kick return specialists don’t make much.

last week I suggested a little rassle dazzle, half back pass and such, obviousman talked it down, this week they do it and we get a score yes it was a QB run but it was something different than #43 up the middle.
