Jamal Williams Out for Season
Jamal Williams gone for the season -- ka
Kevin Acee's latest tweet. Chargers will probably still make the playoffs due to our weak division but there is no way we do any damage in the postseason. I'm so pissed right now I don't even know what to say. We have no other player who can do anything at NT. Seriously nothing. If you thought our run defense was bad before you've got something coming. This is F_____g B______t. Thoughts, prayers, opinions below please.

So we’ll either get to see the true value of Martin and/or Nawgbuo or the Chargers will trade for someone. Who that’ll be and what it’ll take to get him is beyond me. Bottom line: we’re screwed.
Trade LT?

This makes no sense. Throughout the whole pre-season all the talk was about how healthy Jamal Williams was heading into the season. I hate to say this, but bad drafting the past 2-3 years is starting to reveal the poor depth of our team.
Really? Who was the nosetackle we missed out on?

Even if we still had our 2nd round pick, he would have been gone by the time our turn came around.

I guess the argument is if it was a major knee injury that required surgery J-Will might be done for his career (he’s had a bunch of knee surgeries already). If it’s his arm, at least his knees will get to rest for a full season.

I’m wondering if the big rips of the run D last week were Jamal playing injured.

Mine was no better. Yours has a sweet poll.
It’s good enough for now, I’ll wait until Monday before I post something in-depth about what the defense looks like without J-Will.
It seems like the Chargers lack-of-depth is showing up at some key positions. I was thinking today that the Bolts almost have to use their 1st rounder on a RB next season, but now I think it has to be a DT. LT and J-Will are both at the end of their starting careers.

Say it isn't So
When I heard this I hoped that it wasn’t true. I was worried about the lack of experienced depth on both the D and O Line this season, but I had hoped they could skate through this year without too many injuries up front. I guess we have to hope that the young guys they have can develop really fast.
It is a little late to look for help now, but maybe they can bring somebody in. They can afford to cut a safety or one of the 9 LBs if they can find someone worth adding to the roster.
I was out
and I got an e-mail from somebody in the Chargers organization telling me the news. The only way I kept my head from exploding was pretending that it was a sick joke. Unfortunately, it is not.

I don’t know if the injury will allow him, or if someone on IR can come back for the postseason.
Bottom line, this year is all about preparing for the playoffs. I don’t care if we cruise in at 9-7 of 10-6 or whatever, if our team is healthy & playing well at the end of the year we can still do it.

Martin and Ogemdi, it's your coming-out party
Castillo would be able to handle part of a 2-5 role; Cesaire would not. I think it sits at 3-4 D with Nwagbuo filling in; if he plays a few strong games, no worries. If he doesn’t do well, we either play Martin there or quickly sign a backup with some veteran experience, like Darwin Walker, John Thornton or La’Roi Glover.
I don’t think the Chargers go belly-up after this (you gotta have some faith) but the road to Miami just got a helluva lot harder.

San Diego’s defense sans Williams is still better than Baltimore’s with a gimpy Suggs and woozy Reed. Flacco will still eat plenty of turf. And lolololol @ Ray Lewis trying to pursue Sproles. Ravens fans have a ridiculous sense of entitlement. Not sure why.

I know it’s crazy for Charger fans to gather how relevant those are, but they do mean something.
"FLAG! Fail on the field. Re-do." -Disco_Stu
Your defense is better than ours?
Even with Williams, ours is light years ahead of yours. Please tell me why? Eric Weddle?
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I am going to swallow my pride and set my homer-bias aside...
Our defense circa 2006 was without a doubt as good as yours, however; There is no way our defense is as good as yours at this point. Huge losses up front and inconsistency in the defensive backfield do not equal a well coached healthy Baltimore defense. I am crying inside right about now…So tough to write that…
Formerly Blount#9...
2006 was as good as ours?
Ok, lets compare.
Total Yards Allowed: Ravens 264.1/G – 1st overall Chargers: 301.6/G allowed – 10th overall
Passing Yards Allowed: Ravens 188.2/G – 6th overall Chargers: 200.8/G allowed – 13th overall
Rushing Yards Allowed: Ravens 75.9/G – 2nd overall Chargers: 100.8/G – 7th overall
You guys had 1 more sack than us in 2006. We had 60, you had 61. No significant difference at all.
Ravens allows 12.6/G, 1st overall. Chargers allowed 18.9/G, 7th overall.
Ravens, 40 turnovers for 6 Touchdowns, 1st overall. Chargers 28 turnovers for 3 Touchdowns, 17th overall.
So, I can clearly see that you DID NOT set your homer-bias aside, at least for 2006. Your defense was no where close to ours in 2006, and the numbers prove that. You think because you went 14-2, that makes your defense even allowed to be mentioned in the same sentence as the 2006 Ravens? You are funny my friend.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
And that’s 12.6 Points per game and 18.9 Pointer per game.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Well,
Our defense was slightly worse that year, but without a doubt, our offense is better than yours. Therefore, if our defense were to play a good game, we could very well beat you because our offense is better than yours is (And I think anybody would trust Rivers more than Flacco to lead a game winning drive). It will be interesting to see how you guys rebound from losing Ryan; I would like to see somebody consistently beat the Steelers, may as well be you guys. It would be unfortunate to see their offense get the better of your defense again!!!
Formerly Blount#9...
You are missing your star Running Back, starting center, and the possibly Vasquez. Our O-Line is better than yours even with all your guys healthy. Our running game is better than yours at this point, even with LT in the line-up. You have a better passing game, but that is only because we have only had 1 game to show that we have improved vastly.
I trust Flacco just as much as anyone right now to lead us on a game winning drive. He did it last year IN THE PLAYOFFS. And thank you for retracting your statement that your defense was just as good as ours in 2006. Gotta look at the numbers next time man.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
We see time and time again...
that numbers don’t tell the entire story. You should know this as well as anybody considering the game you just played against K.C. Your defense may have put up appealing numbers, and the numbers may have pointed in your direction on offense as well, but you guys were barely able to pull it off. Against Oakland, they were dominating the game for the most part in terms of numbers, they lost-only two letters matter. My Oregon ducks are always last in time of possession throughout the entire nation, and so far this season they are getting manhandled in every numerical category; but we are 2-1.

Rogers would cost a first round draft pick, is a bit of a head case and has a HUGE contract. Henderson, to my knowledge, has never played in a 3-4 so there’s no guarantee he’d be able to do much.
The most likely scenario is that the guys in-house get cracks at it. Nwagbuo is first up, Travis Johnson probably gets the second chance and Martin will be the 3rd one to try if it gets that far down.

Season's not over.
They have 15 more games to figure out how to get it done. We’ll still likely make the playoffs, and hopefully by then players will have stepped up and the coaches will have found a way to make it work.
Remember, the 1999 Rams and 2001 Patriots had star players go down early with no viable replacement, and things turned out fairly well.

Some of this does fall on AJ
Everyone knew Jamal, as Jamal would say at every interview, was playing on his last legs but it happened to be the arm that did him in. Everyone doubles him and his whole game is being the stout at the point of attack for the rush defense which means at least 600 lbs of humanity is falling on him virtually every play. AJ was willing to trade up for Hester and Weddle but the person the team always voted at MVP has only a practice squader and a guy playing different rules in Canada as his backups?

Hey Baltimore,
Can we trade a 7th round pick for Haloti Ngata? Pretty please…That would be really cool for you guys to help us out like that,
Formerly Blount#9...
While this trade would obviously be ridiculous
I do think the trade route has to be explored. Much like how the Chargers acquired McCardell and Chambers in the past, they need to be on the lookout. There has to be an ideal combination here. You need a team whose management will be willing to say they are out of it by week 6 (obviously their 2009 record will need to support, and since week 6 is fast approaching you can probably eliminate any team who has won a game) and has a DT with 3-4 NT experience who actually has enough skills to make a difference. Off the top of my head the name that comes up is Tank Johnson on the Cincinnati Bengals. I don’t think he would solve all the problems associated with losing Williams, but he’s probably better than what we have.
P.S. This is is a nightmare for me. Every draft day I’ve envision this happening and have hoped beyond hope that A.J. would draft someone with the skills to step up if Jamal went down. A.J. has had many, many drafts where he could have accomplished this and never did. Some may call us one of the deepest teams in the league, but it’s a little hard to swallow that concept when you don’t have a true backup to one of the oldest starters on your team who also happens to play a key position.

Has Tank ever had success in the 3-4? Did he even start last season?
I think once the Cleveland thing explodes Shaun Rogers could be gotten for something like a 2nd round pick and a conditional pick (4th or 5th?) based on Rogers performance. He wanted out of there early and he’ll want out again when the revolution begins.

True,
I was thinking of Rogers, and he is a much needed MASSIVE presence in the trenches. Lets hope the Browns start 0-6 or 1-5 so we can help them “rebuild” for next season. Or better yet and equally unlikely, somebody already on the roster will step up and fill this void!
Formerly Blount#9...
Supposedly, Travis Johnson will get a shot at DT when he gets healthy. Maybe he’ll finally show what he was a first-round draft pick.

The plan is in motion. It’ll be tough to swallow next season having no 2nd round pick and 2 NTs on the roster, but that’s a problem for another day.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
Hell no we won't go anywhere
They need to find someone or get a trade for a DT its the most important position of the
3-4 defense
It's shocking that we have no real replacement.
AJ has always had young guys with a few years experience waiting in the wings to back up a wiley veteran or pro bowler on injury. Look at guys like Cromartie, Shaun Philips, Rivers, Sproles, Cooper. These are guys that sat the bench for several years, and played sparingly and gained experience, and proved their worth as backups. When the veteran in front of them was injured or released, they were handed the reigns. Where is Jamal’s youthful backup waiting in the wings? This really reflects badly on AJ Smith, who already was scrambling for Travis Johnson when Bingham went down. We were already thin at D-Line, keeping OG and Martin as rookies, and having journeymen like Bingham and Cesaire as veteran depth. I believe AJ has completely ignored the lines, drafting a D-lineman the last time in 2005 with Castillo! All of these other guys are walk-ons. I believe this error in drafting has finally been exposed, and could cost us the season. Can we be the Colts of 2005, and outscore everyone? Rivera will need to get pretty tricky in the playoffs to ramp up our weak run defense. This is just devastating…is this a result of the Hester and Weddle draft day trades?
yes
Remember all those pciks we traded to the bears? That was because we “didn’t need the picks” and none of them would have made the team. Ironic.
Bring back Balboa Stadium.
Except they still wouldn't have made the team
And would be on other rosters and not available to us currently.
So really, not that ironic.
