San Diego Chargers Receive 24-Hour Extension to Reach Sellout and Lift Blackout

via the Chargers:

Due to the shortened week following the Chargers’ appearance on Monday Night Football, the National Football League granted the team a 24-hour extension in an effort to reach a sellout and lift the local television blackout of this Sunday’s Chargers-Ravens game.  The team now has until 1:15 pm PT on Friday to sell the remaining 1,100 tickets.

Didn't somebody say something about CBS buying the remaining tickets if there were less than 1,000 that still needed to be purchased?  If that's the case, it sounds like the game will be on TV on Sunday as planned.

Yes

Under 1,000 seems to be what we need to get to. It appears we have a good chance of reaching that. Thank God.

Don't MAKE me go to that game!

I’ll do it. I will DO it.

It was Nick Canepa that I heard say that he though 1000 was the magic number

That’s still $50,000-$70,000 that has to be spent to buy up those tickets. But, then again, you donate them to wounded war orphans and its a tax write off, right?

by Wonko on Sep 17, 2009 11:49 AM PDT reply actions

Exactly

I remember a few years ago they were always donated to veterans, fire fighters, cops, etc.

I think the argument is, even if you can’t write those tickets off, that CBS will make a lot more money by having the game on in San Diego than it would cost to pay for 1,000 tickets.

The problem with TV is

That they don’t directly make revenue from people watching. I assume at this point the ad time for for the 1:00 football broadcast is already paid for, Chargers are no Chargers. So basically, they are paying for good will from their advertisers. By showing the Chargers game it makes their advertisers feel good that the next time they buy ads during Chargers time slots the game will be there. But like I said, as far as I understand the station will make the same money directly from the 1:00 football broadcast no matter what game is on.

There is other indirect revenue as well. One of the biggest reasons why CBS has the NFL is advertise their own programs. Many of their shows will premiere next week and they want football fans to know about it. If ratings are down for Sunday’s football broadcast, then, in theory, less viewers will know about these premieres, which hurts those ratings, which scares off advertisers, yada, yada, yada. All indirect revenue.

The other issue is that we aren’t talking about CBS buying up the tickets. That will never happen, they don’t care about the San Diego market that much, they have a whole nation of broadcasts to worry about. We are talking about the local affiliate KFMB buying up the tickets. However, I assume, they are not even the only CBS affiliate affected. I don’t know what affiliate would show the Charger games in Anaheim or Temecula or wherever, but they would get to show the Charger game because of KFMB’s good will. In the past, when a local business bought up the tickets, they got some free ad time that would show everywhere the Charger game was shown, but I doubt KFMB would care about advertising outside of San Diego.

Go to the still. It’s the NYC charger bar. I saw that blackout bills game there last year. Ruined my day.

During football season, we gather at MJ Armstrong’s at 1st Ave. and 19th St.—NYC’s official “Chargers Bar”—to watch Chargers games.

I know those guys

I’m planning on going to MJ Armstrong’s at some point this season to watch a game with them.

By the way, a smart person would take a train from NYC to Philly.

They call themselves the “Big Apple Bolts Backers”, or at least they used to. I got a buddy from San Diego studying at NYU who is usually with them.

Where you watching? Your house? A bar?

I don’t even know where the trains go. Would I take a train from Grand Central or Penn Station?

I think Grand Central has a train that comes straight down to 30th St Station in Philly. From Penn Station you’d need to switch trains, probably in Trenton.

I was planning on watching it at home, but if you manage to come down we’ll probably watch at least a half in the sports bar around the corner. If you make that journey, I’d owe you at least a couple of beers.

If you wind up at MJ’s take pictures, make a FanShot out of it and point some more people to the site. Please? MJ’s can become the official bar of BFTB.

I'm thinking about MJ's.

I posted some stuff introducing myself on their google group and I told them I came from here but I’ll make sure that I direct everyone over here. I only have a camera on my phone but its like 2 MP so I’ll definetly do that. I saw that they put up Charger banners and everything from MJ’s website and they posted some videos from last Monday night drunkenly singing the Chargers anthem after we won so it looks like a good time. I’ll let you guys know how it goes and we’ll see if we can do a east coast BFTB meetup.

Well, Acee claims he thinks the blackout is lifted

The evening rush hour guys on 1360 that do the “Chargers Power Hour” were saying that tickets still needed to sold.

“Hacksaw” was on 1090 saying that Scott and BR had a big announcement to make.

I wonder if somehow 1090 forked out the dough to get the game televised? I wouldn’t put it by them, they want to get their name out there and they want to be associated with the Chargers even though 1360 broadcasts the games. The main reason why this may not be true is that they had financial problems recently that caused them to go through layoff and buying up the tickets would be worth someone’s yearly salary.

Something is happening. I just don’t know what it is.

105.3 FM broadcasts the games.

Just sayin…

by Wonko on Sep 18, 2009 1:06 AM PDT up reply actions

are they?

I thought 105.3 and 1360 were clear channel

and 1090 was someone else?

I guess you could theorize that if the game is on TV that hurts the radio broadcast and that helps 1090 because it hurts 1360…

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Sep 18, 2009 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I was saying

1360 and 105.3 are the same company.

I forget the name of the company that runs 1090. It’s on the tip of my tongue… but whatever.

Doesn’t matter. Fans came through, the 1090 thing was pure speculation on my part. A bad attempt to start and internet rumor.

Yeah....

Im sure its gonna go under a 1000, some dude bought 10seats and another bought another 10seats before I bought my tickets and the guys behind me were buying Ravens tix… so hopefully by tonight it should be under a 1000…
