49ers-Chargers: Fire Away With 49ers questions
Hey Charger fans, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. The 49ers and Chargers wrap up their respective preseasons this Friday in a game that really is built for the diehards that frequent our sites. Coach Singletary has already said we'll see a lot of rookies as the team tries to maintain the health of the rest of the team.
My 49ers are at a sort of cross-roads at this point. They've moved on from Mike Nolan and brought in Mike Singletary, a man who really needs no introduction. The 49ers have had intense practices and are looking to build themselves into a punch 'em in the mouth, "physical with an F" type of team.
When it comes to the Chargers, naturally I enjoy the powder blue unis. I'm a fan of Ladanian Tomlinson. Our defensive coordinator, Greg Manusky, came from San Diego. On the other hand, 49ers have a special point of rag for Norv Turner. His one year as 49ers OC (2006) was Alex Smith's best year and the 49ers truly seemed to be building towards something. He left and the whole thing was re-set.
Once we get into the regular season, these FanPosts are more useful for breaking down the matchups for the two teams and assessing where the advantages are. However, for a preseason game, it's obviously a lot different. Each team would certainly enjoy winning, but really it's about position battles and determining our own 53-man roster. There aren't a lot of position battles left, but there are still a handful of players battling for the final roster spots.
I'll be answering some questions from John so there might be some front page repetition. However, feel free to fire away with any questions you might have about the 49ers, the matchup, or general thoughts on life. If I don't get back to you with an answer right away, don't worry, I will. Also, if you get a chance, Rec this so it stays up top through the week.

How are the 49er fans
reacting to Singletary turning their offense into a modern day “3 yards and a cloud of dust”? SD and SF are similar in that we have a proud history of offensive inovation. Any backlash?

"Physical with an F"
There’s been a lot of jokes made about how Singletary wants a “physical with an F” team. However, as much fun as it is to have a dynamic passing attack, a team that can roll over another team is fine by me. It is certainly tough to watch them sometimes when the running game is struggling because the passing game can be abysmal.
At this point Singletary is getting the benefit of the doubt. It will be interesting to see what people think a month into the season if the team is 1-3 or 0-4.

Glen Coffee...
Whats your take on his role for the niners come regular season, assuming that frank gore stays healthy. Committee? 3rd Down Back?
by SDRocketfan on Sep 1, 2009 3:16 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
running backs
Frank Gore is definitely the starter and will get a good majority of the carries. The remaining carries are likely to be split between guys like Coffee, Purdue rookie Kory Sheets and RB/FB Michael Robinson. At this point Coffee will get the most out of that group. I’m hoping in the 100-125 carry range, but I guess it depends how committed they are to the power rushing attack. I don’t think Coffee will strictly qualify as “3rd down back” or “short yardage back,” but really a guy who can come in at any point to mix it up a little.

Frank Gore
Forgive my ignorance, but I have yet to see a niners preseason game. I was wondering why Gore’s stock seemed to slip in the fantasy world. I have been seeing him stick around as late as 3rd round in some of my mock drafts. I am taking either Larry Fitzgerald or Randy Moss in the first round, then the best RB that is still left in round 2. Usually that is Portis, Westbrook, Brown, or Thomas (LT or Jacobs if I am lucky). With the way those drafts are going it sounds like Gore might be a good round 2 sleeper, huh?

Gore is a solo act?
I thought they said in last week’s SF game broadcast Gore is the feature back – no committee.
I would have thought that would improve his fantasy prospects. He seems like solid scoring option to me.

Is Vernon Davis
ever going to apologize to me for stinking up my fantasy team last year?
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Sep 1, 2009 3:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Davis
I think you’ll see some improvement this year in his numbers. One of the main problems last season was that due to the Mike Martz offense (and lack of pass protection), the 49ers held Davis back to block more often than not. He’s a great blocking tight end, but obviously a first round pick is expected to do more than that. 49ers OC Jimmy Raye has said he’ll use Davis like he used Tony Gonzalez in KC. We’ll see if that actually happens as Martz wanted to utilize him a lot in the passing game and that went south quickly.

If you relied on Davis that much for it to matter...
Your fantasy team deserved to stink it up :P

who's the fantasy receiver on your team?
and who’s dead weight on the team?
by not humble enough on Sep 1, 2009 3:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
fantasy receivers
Isaac Bruce was the most consistent receiver last year and either he or veteran Arnaz Battle could be your safest plays early (if you so chose). The guy with the big upside is Josh Morgan. He was a 6th round pick (some character issues) in 2008 and only had 20 catches last season. However, people are rather stoked about his potential going forward. At the same time, this is definitely a run-first team so 49ers receivers might be a less than stellar option out of the gate.
As for dead-weight, Brandon Jones is the deadest of weight b/c of injury. He is out until early October but still carries a roster spot. As for talent reasons, Barry Sims would probably qualify given that he’s getting old and a whole lot of washed-up. We’ll see if he improves out of the Martz pass protection scheme.

I don’t know that a team quarterbacked by Shaun Hill can ever have a fantasy receiver.

Will the 49ers ever have a winning season again?
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on our souls.

maybe
I won’t hold my breath, but I’m hoping for 9-7 this year. Cross your fingers!

At least they will have a better record than that other bay area team...

I loved
the story about your defense giving the Raiders a smackdown in practice. Is your defense that good or are the Raiders that bad?

Raiders offense
The raiders haven’t really showed to have a good offense. Jamarcus Russell isn’t accurate enough. The 49ers defense so far has been getting a lot of turnovers so far in the preseason. Our defense is improving, so we might be able to hit top 10 (ranked 13th last year) if we get a better pass rush. We have gotten 7 ints (tied for 2nd in preseason) so we’re looking a lot better as a unit. I only recall Darius Heyward Bey having one pass thrown to him but it was off target. So I way say it is a mix.
Go 49ers

Raiders are rather bad
I think there rushing defense is more an issue than anything else. The Chargers should be able to run all over them.
The Raiders offense is not in good shape at this point. Chaz Schilens was one of the bright spots and he’s out for the short term. The running hasn’t impressed anybody thus far. The 49ers have definitely made a lot of turnovers on defense, but the Raiders are pretty awful at this point.

Art Shell tried to bring the whole no-nonsense ethic back to the Bay
And it was a resounding failure. The marquee talent bailed out; the team didn’t buy into it; and ultimately the team was in worse shape after Shell’s second tenure than before.
How is the team responding to Samurai Mike (I love that tag!)?
What is Mike doing differently than Shell to create success and bring the Niners back to greatness?
What do you see Mike doing to keep his passionate approach fresh, and avoid the Bobby Knight-type gaffs?
(sorry for posting the question twice, but it seems like Fooch is only checking this thread)

Mike vs. Art Shell
Sorry, been a bit busy the last couple days.
I didn’t follow Art Shell closely enough, but it seems like people just buy into the intensity from Mike Singletary a little bit more. Art Shell had his hey-day, but something about Singletary just brings a certain legitimacy to the table. He was actually a motivational speaker after his playing days and before he entered the coaching profession.
At this point it’s too early to tell how fresh things are. Players are buying into it in large part because they know he’s a Hall of Fame linebacker and he doesn’t BS them. Every single player on the 49ers that has been asked about Singletary responds that he is very up front with them and doesn’t BS them. At this point, as long he maintains a level of honesty with his players, he’ll be fine.

Singletary seems like he needs to be careful with the whole "intensity, serious, passion!" thing.
It could get real old, real fast.

Loosing for sure, but perhaps even if they win
This new breed of player is more like acts more like independent contractor than an employee. Technically they are dependant contractors.
Maybe cause is the massive amounts of FU money these players have in the bank; maybe it’s the demise of team loyalty due to free agency. It seems like the majority of players now days respond negatively to strong and harsh treatment.
