An Updated San Diego Chargers Depth Chart

Last week, prior to the Cardinals game, I was going to make a post showing the differences in the Chargers Week 1 and Week 2 depth charts.  The problem was that there was only one tiny change, Tim Dobbins and Kevin Burnett switching places.  This week there still aren't a ton of changes, but I'd like to take this opportunity to go back over the entire San Diego Chargers depth chart.

The starters and backups at every position (including the backup holder for kicks!) lie after the jump.

Notes

  • English moved from 2nd to 3rd on the depth chart, with Applewhite moving over to that side.  A message from the team?
  • Ben Muth and Wopamo Osaisai have been waived.
  • Contrary to what some people think, Buster Davis will not be getting cut.  Look at him all over this depth chart, and usually fairly high up.
  • Anyone else curious as to why the Chargers didn't bring in another Kicker to save Kaeding's leg?  This is a common practice and the only reason Truman Spencer is on the team as a Punter.
  • Tyronne Green still not listed as a Center.  Is this going to be like Naanee, where they try to change his position and eventually give up?
  • Before you ask, the Fullbacks are listed like that.  I didn't do that.  There are literally two starting FB spots on the depth chart, one has Hester (and the 2 backups) and the other simply has Manumaleuna (no backups).  I don't get it either.

Do you have any thoughts about Bolts From The Blue?  Any tips you want to send our way?  Whenever you have something to say, don't hesitate to e-mail me directly.

What about Martin!!!

I don’t like the fact that Martin is at the bottom of the WR list. It will be sad to watch him go, and even tho’ he played against 2nd and 3rd string player, you can see that spark. Besides, in the games vs the seahawks, Nannee and Buster played against the 2nd strings and did a good job too. I think we are making a big mistake here, ala Wes Welker kind of mistake

by handsomeramm on Aug 24, 2009 12:37 PM PDT reply actions

Martin's downgrade is part of the strategy

They must be thinking that by putting him down there at #5, other teams will read into it that his performance in the Chargers camp was indicative of that ranking. It’s not.

I guess by this chart we can infer that they like Martin more than Banks.

I haven’t seen much of Greg Carr yet, I wonder if he gets the reps for these next two weeks.

by Trendsearcher on Aug 24, 2009 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

No downgrade

The WRs on the depth chart haven’t changed at all in the past 3 weeks. He’s been the #5 receiver at that spot the whole time.

I too will be dissapointed

If charly martin is let go. He has attitude. according to the article a few weeks ago everyone has told him he’s not big enough, fast enough, so he has a chip on his shoulder to prove them wrong. Are we going to gift wrap another player for the Patriots?

I'm not going to saw Johnson will be cut

but he’s a long shot at this point to make the 53-man. He just hasn’t stood out in pre-season while Bennett has. Bennett gives us a better chance to win this season.

Johnson is more likely to be a practice squad guy at this point.

Why wouldn't they keep both?

It's certainly possible

but then you have to decide who your going to cut at another spot. Siler, for example. No matter what, it’s gonna be tough for the coaches.

add Cletis Gordon

to the list of possible cuts since Hughes could possibly beat him out somehow.

Gordon already cut !

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on our souls.

I added that before I saw the news

I guess Hughes has impressed. I’m a little surprised by the idea of trying to make it through with only 4 CBs, especially given the AFC West. I guess they also feel comfortable with using an extra safety in dime packages, which is fine. However, I’m going to assume now that one of the PS players will be a CB to protect against injuries.

Also

This may be a clue that we are going to carry 5 safeties (Hart, Oliver, Gregory, Ellison, Weddle), which the team has done a few times in the past

I was wondering

if Spillman doesn’t sneak in there somewhere; he impressed me and has reasonable speed.

Spillman

needs an injury to make this team. I think he’s NFL caliber, but just can’t make this team.

The reporting out of camp

is that they like Spillman a lot, but he’s pretty much a lock for the practice squad.

Weddle, Oliver, Gregory

can all play CB in an emergency. So that helps.

Good, first Wilhelm, now Gordon!

I think they will keep an extra safety instead of a 4th corner…? Maybe Hughes does make the team.

by SJO on Aug 24, 2009 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

So now we have to cut two people from that group?

Corey Clark for sure.
The other one is a toss-up between Dombrowski and Tolbert.

They can’t cut Kris Wilson because NFL requires them to have 3 TEs.

Since we have to count Whitehurst

we need to still cut 3.

I’m not attached to Clark, but it’s been interesting that he was playing LT in the last preseason game and Shelton was at RT. Not sure what that means.

Probably

just getting Shelton reps on both sides, since he will probably be the backup at both LT and RT.

Osgood?

I may be the only one that thinks it (in which case I’m wrong), but I think Osgood could be on the bubble.
As great as he’s been on Special Teams, he’s virtually no threat to break into the receiving corps without injuries.

Don’t we have the players to replace him as the gunner and open up a roster spot for someone else? I don’t know who that would be, but there has to be someone.

by Hoot1969 on Aug 24, 2009 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see it happening

I’ve said this a few times, but this team is geared to win now. You don’t try to win a Super Bowl by cutting pro bowl players.

BTW

For those guessing at 9 or 10 LBs. I only included 9 in my list of roster contenders. I don’t really think that Holt, Bakhtari or Beckwith can make this team without injuries occurring.

Agreed

There’s too much depth at all of the LB spots

Was he injured? Beckwith and Holt looked pretty good. Bakhtari seems a little small to play the OLB/DE position

53 man roster

It was an easier cut down for me because I had most of your list making the team for sure. The ones on my bubble, from your list, were Tolbert, Green, Dombrowski & Hughes. My other players on my bubble were C. Martin, Grennan, Beckwith, R. Jackson & Spillman.

With the cut of Gordon, we are either going to pick up a CB from someone else’s cuts or we might be keeping Spillman or Hughes on the roster, rather than dropping them to the practice squad. I liked the way Spillman played vs. ARIZ. I was still surprised they cut Gordon even though he missed some huge tackles.

I keep Spillman & put Martin, Dombrowski, Grennan, Beckwith, Green, Hughes, Jackson & Nwagbuo on the practice squad.

I see

16 carries and 40 yards for a 2.5 YPC; it’s hard for me to see how that gets him on the roster. He really needs to show something these next few games.

No he doesn't

what has Larry English shown them these two games? or Vasquez? What he needs to show them he showed them in college. They’ll give him a full season on the team.

English

Has been injured; and there is substantial difference between first rounders and fourth rounders. For that matter both Green and Johnson were comp. picks, they were really more like fifth rounders, it’s just a crap shoot down there. Marcus Thomas had good college numbers and they dropped him. I could be wrong, but based on what I see he is slow and not great at moving the pile. He also doesn’t seem to see when nothing is there and only has the one cut. The Chargers are thin at the Oline and Turner is high on Vasquez so he is solid; on the other hand Johnson is fourth on RB chart; and since Hester can go at tailback too, on a team with this much talent at the bottom end, he could be in trouble.

16 preseason carries isn't enough to judge him on.

LT has averaged 2.3 YPC. Just Sayin’

I just think they’ve picked him up more for what he’ll do down the road than for any immediate impact he may have.

by Hoot1969 on Aug 24, 2009 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Depth is a good thing

The key to the 3-4 is the LB corp. They will probably carry 10 on this years 53 man roster. They did last year. English has been hurt, but they aren’t going to park him on the bench, because that would make AJ look bad. He needs to be ready so AJ can say goodbye to Merriman this off season, against the fans wishes. WR will be out deepest position. Nothing wrong with that. Nanee looked good against 1st team AZ d Saturday. He is a keeper.

by glamisdave on Aug 24, 2009 2:58 PM PDT reply actions

I agree at least 9 LBs, and maybe 10

But having SIX back up linebackers means compromises at other positions.

How many WR’s do we keep knowing that we have some high profile free agents next year?

How many RBs?

O Line isn’t too deep either, if we loose a few starting O linemen there is a serious drop off in our back ups.

This is a complex puzzle for the team to solve.

by Trendsearcher on Aug 24, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Does Beckwith make team?

Does it take keeping 10 linebackers for Beckwith to make the team? Any chance he beats out Siler? I’m sure he’d have to contribute on ST as much as Siler to have a chance.

Tough roster calls FOR SURE

As maestro876 says, Whitehurst counts towards the 53-man roster….

There are 53 men on the regular roster and up to eight on the practice squad. A total of 45 of the regular roster is active for the game. The third string QB usually dresses for the game as the 46th player and can come in only if the other two QBs are hurt. Sometimes a team will carry all three QBs as part of the 45 man game squad but rarely. Too bad Whitehurst can’t just be part of the practice squad and still dress as the 46th guy, but the rules are what they are, and every NFL team has to deal with them and the very same situation.

This team is so deep, I think it’s even hard to whittle the roster down to 61, which includes the practice squad…. Hopefully there won’t be any injuries the next two weeks (or thereafter, although it’s inevitable there will be some — hopefully you minimize them), but if there are, obviously that opens up spots potentially on the 45-46-man roster, 53-man roster, and/or the 8-man practice squad….

Wish the o-line were better and deeper; otherwise I think we’re in very good shape. ANY teams in the NFL loaded on the o-line?… If so, as players get cut, you may see AJ pick up someone there, probably a G.

I like Gatrell Johnson, James Holt, and Charley Martin to make the practice squad; if people ahead of them were to get injured, they’d be ready to step up and step in…. Don’t know how the rest will shake out, but I hope they don’t cut those three, and I don’t see them making the 53-man roster at this point, barring injuries.

by John CT on Aug 24, 2009 8:59 PM PDT reply actions

LB's and DB's to practice squad?

Siler stays on the team because he’s the back-up long-snapper to Binn. He’s pretty good and plays hard both on D and on special teams.

If Holt’s on the practice squad, he’s probably joined there by Beckwith or Bakhtiari. (Could be wrong — or could even be both….)

I THINK Simeon Castille is also headed to the practice squad, but at least one and probably (imo) two DB’s would be; Castille, CJ Spillman, Brandon Hughes, and Kevin Ellison could all be good candidates to be there, but obviously they won’t have all 4 or even 3 DB’s on the 8-man PS. With Cletis Gordon being cut, looks like Hughes has a decent chance to actually make the 53-man roster, but they could even keep only 3 official CB’s and go with 5 or 6 safeties. Sounds crazy, but possible…. What a puzzle!
