My AFC West Thoughts

ok through 2 weeks of preseason San Diego might win the division 3-6 games.  Oakland will be 9-7 at best.  Denver is a mess at QB. Kansas City does not have a decent o-line or WRs.  Aure San Diego has weakness too but they are minor compared to everyone else.  The only thing stopping you from wining the big game is Norv.  One thing i know for sure, the Chargers will win games.  See last year I thought you guys going to win the super bowl for real.  I studded the talent and everything but the bad thing about the Chargers is they play down to their opponents in real life sometimes but I am not giving up on Denver just being real.  I hope you can represent the AFC West in the playoffs well.  I am tired of the media calling us a weak division

You shouild switch to the power blues for home jerseys.

[Edited By: John (obviousman).  I hope that's alright j-man.  I was just trying to help make it clearer for everyone else.  I'm sure the Chargers will do their best to represent the AFC West, but I hear what you're saying about the media calling it a weak division.  My solution?  I get my news and opinions here at BFTB, Mile High Report, Arrowhead Pride, and everywhere else on SB Nation instead of paying too much attention to the media.  They're all biased anyways.]

I would argue one thing

I’m not ready to say Norv is “holding us back”. I keep hearing this but he’s gotten us the furthest we’ve been in 15 years, every coach has to make it to /win a super bowl for their first time and i don’t care what Marty did in the regular season, playoffs is when its counts and he couldn’t cut it. considering how disastrous our D was last year I’d say he did a pretty good job. just my opinion.

agree

Norv has gotten a bad rap, and I can’t wait for us to win it all so he can quiet all the naysayers. I live in Redskins country, and he is not well respected here. It’s a shame, because I don’t believe that many coaches could have done better under the circumstances he was forced work under. He had an owner that was a lifelong Skins fan and didn’t have a clue about running a football team. He basically told Norv who he wanted him to play. Jeff George? Not Norv’s call, but he had to play him.
Norv has a chance to quiet the doubters, and I believe he will.

A bit of backdraft

I am a Charges fan through and through, but with family in KC and Colorado; I have particularly enjoyed the AFC West. I have concerns with Norv getting them over the finish line, but when Belichek was at Cleveland he was not a favored son. Coaches only gain great favor when they win or years later. You think Cottrel suddenly lost the knowledge after Merriman/Cromartie/Hart get hurt…it is lot to do with timing.

All that be said, the Chargers should be deep in playoffs.
KC will att least hit mid ground; Dwayne Bowe isn’t too bad at the outside, but Haely can be hot tempered and I certainly wouldn’t want LJ

Oakland seemed to be on upswing till Cable took an upswing, maybe he went to Craft’ coaching seminar..If the Raiders stick to a solid attack they could do well.

Denver….so many colossal blunders in a row; they took the heat off the Raiders. Shanahan a heck of a coach….lousy personnel man….Bowlen should have hired a new GM, but I suspect the rat just couldn’t give….losing Cutler, not as huge of a loss as everyone thinks…Marshal just a walking talking talented idoit (he falls under the LJ issue at KC)…the final coup; what was Bowlen smoking in hiring Daniels, what a huge mistake; completely unprepared to be a head coach and never deserved a shot other than be standing in the right spot at the right time. Love my cousins, but a complete mess here; ugly defense, lackluster offense….3-4 wins tops

by bo_shilo on Aug 26, 2009 9:45 PM PDT reply actions

Hi bo_shilo, I understand your thinking about Josh McDaniels...

…but I repectfully submit that you may be wrong about him. I’ve been a Broncos and an AFC West fan since the early 60’s. I’ve seen a lot of coaches come and go and not just in our division, but I’ve never seen a coach better prepared than McDaniels. It is almost as if he’s been preparing for this job since the day he was born. And maybe he has. He is the son of a very good and well respected coach from Canton, Ohio. He was the quarterback of a State Championship team and after a very good college career (and a short side trip into business), he went into coaching; not at the upper levels, he started at the bottom, the coaching equivalent of a gofer. He’s been learning and perfecting his craft ever since. I’m sure I’m wrong about this but it seems this guy spends so much time at his job that I don’t think the guy has a life outside football.

The first thing he did after blowing Bowlen away during the interview process was to bring in some really good assistant coaches to help him. You might reasonably argue about Nolan’s time as a head coach but nobody has ever questioned his ability as a defensive expert. And he hired at least one coach from every other AFC West team. I think he got his special teams coach from the Chiefs, the defensive line coach from the Chargers, and the line backers coach from the Raiders. He kept the two very best coaches from Shanahan’s staff, the offensive line coach, Rick Dennison, and running backs coach, Bobby Turner. Both played an intregral part in building the legendary Bronco’s rushing game that Shanahan seemed to abandon the last couple of years.

During the free agency period he brought in high character, talented, leaders. Yes, some of those players are near the ends of their respective careers but most still have some gas in the tank and will do a good job, short term, of filling some of the worst holes on defense and be special mentors for the younger players who will eventually replace them.

A lot of people didn’t like his draft strategy but if you look a little deeper you might note that every player he drafted was high character and a team leader, even if you never heard of the player before. He did not draft for need but rather drafted the best player available. We can argue about the wisdom of that style but it has done well by the Steelers and Patriots. Even most of the free agents he signed were of similar ilk.

And he always has an eye open for any new talent that might fit his scheme.

Now, I know he’s not perfect. I would have preferred that the Cutler situation had been handled differently. But Kyle Orton is going to be O.K. There are some other things he’s done that I don’t always understand or agree with but I will tell you this. The man has a plan and that plan looks pretty good to me. I don’t know what the Bronco’s record will be when this season is done, but I promise you, they will be better; much, much better.

And that’s the thing. People outside the AFC West are saying none of us are going to be very good this year, but most of them don’t know what they’re talking about. They haven’t been following the division closely enough to see all the improvement. With your new coach, new GM, QB and all the other positive changes I fully expect to see a better Chief’s team this year. And, God forbid, I think the Raiders are going to be better this year as well, though I think they have a little bit longer road ahead of them. And the Chargers still have great talent and are the class of the division until somebody proves otherwise.

The AFC West is not going to be the patsy division everybody on the outside expects them to be. The eventual Super Bowl champion may not come out of our division, but I guarantee you that the AFC West will be playing some good football starting this season and opening more than a few eyes around the league.

Mark my words.

Not sure which world you're referring to

But the AFCW is going to be the worst division in the NFL this year, with the exception of our Chargers. That’s partly homerism, but mostly based on the circuses that are going on with the other teams in our division.

By the rest of the world I mean...

…those outside the AFC West who haven’t been following these teams very closely and seem to be parroting what they hear from equally under informed main stream media types.

I agree with you if you’re saying that the AFC West, with the exception of the Chargers, has been very weak, perhaps the weakest division in football, for the past couple of years. I disagree with you if what you are saying is that the AFC West will be the weakest division in all of football in 2009. When I take a close look at the what the Broncos and Chiefs have done I see many, very positive changes that are going to make both these clubs more competitive in both sort term and long term. Even the Raiders seem to be making some moves in the right dirction.

Will they be headed to the SUper Bowl this year? Probably not, but I don’t think they’re the dregs of the NFL either. Time will tell.

I thought a little more about your post last night and felt I needed to clear something up.

I can understand how and why you might disagree with what I said above, All these clubs need to prove, on the field, that they are not what many are saying they are, bottom dwellers. I have offered some evidence as to why I think they are all showing a great deal of improvement. But if, at the end of the season it turns out that I was wrong about the AFC West, I can then be rightfully accused of being overly optimistic. I can can live with that.

However, it seems at first glance that your tone is mocking when you write things like “…rub his face in it…” if I’m wrong and, “…see how amazingly clairvoyant he is…” if I turn out to be right. I hope I am just misunderstanding you.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

by Trinidad Jack on Aug 28, 2009 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

not intended to be mocking

Just that at the end of the year, we will see which is true. I hope that the AFCW is much better and I hope that the Chargers go all the way. If they do make it, I don’t want people saying that it is only because we played in a soft division. I would like to see the other teams do well too, not only because it would help elevate the level of competition that the Bolts play, but that would also make those 6 games this year that much more exciting.

On another note – I do actually agree with you that beyond hoping, I think that they will be better. Each has made a few questionable moves, but most are moves that are going in the right direction.

I just wanted your comment to be recorded so that we could look back and ridicule you a little or praise you

If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

Sounds fair to me.

I can always handle a little ribbing. Hope I don’t have to endure it though, not because of self esteem issues but because it will mena all the teams are playing better.

I agree with what you said about being the winner of a weak division. It seems like it hasn’t stopped many of those NFC teams for years though.

I agree, but only to a point

McDaniels has the background to be a good coach and he has shown decent choices; but being a head coach is a different animal. It carries a lot about psychology of the game and players; youth is not served here well at all. I am ok with his draft and his choices on the assistant level. Yet some of his conferences and attitude just hasn’t set well for me (sort of like listening to Cutler talking). Other than losing to the Chargers, I generally wish Denver well and at the moment that includes Mr McDaniels

by bo_shilo on Aug 27, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Earlier, I wrote a long response to this but must have screwed up when I tried to post it.

So now I’m just going to summerize. Your points about McDaniels youth and public personna are well taken. I think his youth and inexperience is what cost the Broncos Jay Cutler. He was trying to make a philosophical point but couldn’t understand why Cutler took it personally and then couldn’t seem to come up with a reasonable way out of the mess. And I think we can all agree neither McDaniels nor his former boss are what I might call smooth in front of the camera.

I was just trying to say two things. One is that I think the man does have a plan and it is very, almost obsessively detailed. Maybe it will work, I tend to think it will, but we’ll have to wait and see. The other is that I think the entire AFC West is going to be better and surprise more than a few people this year.

I totally understand your last statement about being a Chargers fan. Every club needs fans like you. I respect that. I’m the same way about the Broncos. But one of the things I noticed about these sites is that a lot of contributors can’t seem to understand how I can be a true Bronco fan and still be a fan of the other AFC West teams. I really do mean it when I say if it the Broncos can’t win it all, then I want it to be another AFC West team. I love the Chargers. I love the Chiefs. I love the…, well, I’m still working on that one, lol. I have some very fond memories of Chargers games going back to before John Hadl and Lance Alworth. I’m still disappointed that the Chargers lost one of the best playoff games ever played to the Dolphins. And about the Raiders, lets face it, even they have been improving. And they play the bad guy role so very well, don’t they? The rest of us love to hate them. Whatever you think about pro wrestling, they figure that one out a long time ago and it never gets old.

Anyway, good luck to your Chargers, except, you know.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

by Trinidad Jack on Aug 28, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Most of the guys that get up to the level of head coach have plans and are obsessively detailed. However, the difference is that some of them have that ability to motivate the team and lead them and some don’t.

Everyone would freely admit that Norv Turner could playcall with the best offensive minds in the game, but most people have a hard time believing that he’s a motivator and a leader. McDaniels’ credentials as a smarty-pants have never been questioned, it’s the whole “leading and motivating” part that appears to be missing during his first few months in Denver.

Nolan was a fantastic pick-up though.

by John Gennaro on Aug 31, 2009 7:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree and agree.

There is no doubt McDaniels needs to work on his people skills. The jury is out about whether McDaniels can motivate his players despite that weakness.

ANd you can already see the improvements Nolan has made with the D. I hope thety aren’t just patches that oppenents figure out quickly and find a way around.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

by Trinidad Jack on Aug 31, 2009 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

Dumervil looked like an absolute beast last night. A Merriman/DeMarcus Ware-type beast.

I just finished reading a book about Nolan’s last season as a Defensive Coordinator with Baltimore, and it’s kindof relevant. You can tell just by reading about that season that the man has a brilliant mind for defensive scheming but isn’t much for motivating and leading. He’s a little too quiet most of the time and a little too loud at inappropriate times (like when he started chewing out the offensive coordinator during a game). You could tell he wasn’t going to be able to control an NFL locker room.

I feel the same way about McDaniels. I felt the same way about Cam Cameron. I’d take either man to call the plays for my team, but make them “the boss” in the locker room and they’re bound to rub some people the wrong way.

The difference between guys like McDaniels and guys like Parcells (or Belichick), is that Parcells somehow makes the players think it’s their own idea to work themselves ragged. Which isn’t to say that McDaniels won’t eventually turn into a coach that can do that, but I’m of the belief that 98% of head coaches need at least one poor performance to learn from before they can become good head coaches (i.e. Belichick in Cleveland). I don’t know that McDaniels can be the man you envision him being in Year One.

I'm a "one poor performance" kind of guy too.

Shanahan did as much with the Raiders before coming over to the Broncos, although it could just as well have been Al who screwed that up.

Reluctantly, I see your point about McDaniels in year one. To tell you the truth, I and many other Broncos fans would be happy with improvement and some real hope that things will get better. Even in pre-season the defense looks much better, but it is still preseason. And there are flashes of offense, maybe not as electric as last year but still very good. I can see some hope, that is if I’m not still looking through rose colored glasses, lol.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

by Trinidad Jack on Aug 31, 2009 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

BTW if you missed the sarcasm

If I didn’t point it out bluntly; I am not a Cutler fan. I just thought the situation was handled poorly and in the end I think it turned out well for Denver. Orton is tolerable for a run oriented offense and Cutler needs high maintenance like a barbi doll…..

But if Chicago hadn’t come along McDaniels had created a bad thing, like an event on the San Andres fault

by bo_shilo on Aug 27, 2009 10:10 PM PDT reply actions

I'm kind of disappointed in Cutler.

He certainly could have handled that whole mess better. But I’m disappointed in McDaniels too. Oh well, you can’t always be lucky. The Chargers have certainly been blessed with their last couple of starting QB’s though. I thought you were going to miss Brees but it looks like Rivers may be even better. Kinda makes up for that whole Ryan Leef thing doesn’t it? Sorry, I should have written that. I didn’t mean anything bad by it, just going for the laugh. Right about here is where my wife would punch me in the side and tell me to shut up.

in the back of the neck. :-)

Great to see you Trinidad. As I look at it, I think the AFC West will not be substantially better this year as both KC and Denver seem to be in rebuild mode and missing some important cogs. Oakland is … well Oakland. Long term you could be on the money if they back-fill those holes and their teams cohere.

You are probably right.

That would be a reasonable position. Reasonably, probably none of these three teams will show enough improvement to make a serious run at the playoffs. But I think at least two will show enough improvement to start playing good games all the time.

But here’s to hoping
