The team of the decade
SI couldn't wait 10 years to decide which team is the "Team of the decade". So, here their list of the "Team of the 9 years so far." Where did the Chargers rank??

I wanted the Chargers higher
but those stats are really hard to argue. Great link.

about right
Taking the entire decade into consideration, I’d say they are are ranked appropriately. I’d love to complain…but their record was putrid from 2000-2003.
Respect has to be earned .....
and these stats don’t lie.

Who knew
That were .500 for the decade? Alright boys, this years the year to push us into winning football for the aughties!
Question: What’s the minimum it would take to push us into the top 10 on this list?
2nd Question: Would we rank higher on a list of teams of the 90s? 80s?

I thought the same thing
Then I remembered that Leaf was drafted in 1998 and the team didn’t really recover until 2004-2005. Still, it amazed me how quickly I forgot about the bad times.

just over .500
as a franchise, the team is only something like 2 or 3 games above .500. They reached it during the stretch at the end of last season.
Plus
there are a number of teams in the 90s that were obviously superior teams just by virtue of going to multiple Super Bowls: Cowboys, Bills, Broncos, Packers. Or teams that went to 1 Super Bowl and were solid throughout the decade: 49ers, Giants, Steelers. The Chargers are probably in the conversation with the next set of teams that made Super Bowls, but struggled through much of the 90s: Redskins, Falcons, Patriots, Oilers/Titans. Of course, there are then the teams with winning records who never made Super Bowls: Chiefs, Dolphins, Eagles, Raiders and Vikings.
Note: One thing that surprised me was that the Vikings were one of the winningest teams in the 90s with 95 wins. They only had 1 losing season (and they still won 6 games that year, better than a lot of teams’ worst year in the 1990s) and won 15 games once. Denny Green wasn’t even the coach in the 6 win year. So he had a winning record every year in Minnesota except for the final one and one year where he finished .500.
