2007 Playoffs - The Moment Rivers Tore His ACL

That was sad/scary/awesome.  Awesome only because I know what he did afterwards.

NFL Replay on NFL Network shows a good deal of Chargers fans.  If you get the channel I implore you to watch it often.  They're replaying the 2007 Chargers/Titans playoff game right now and it's the beginning of the second quarter.  Rivers hands off a ball, but fakes a scramble.  Goff blocks a guy so hard he winds up on the ground, rolling towards Rivers legs.

The scene afterwards is amazing.  Rivers limps to the sideline, then puts pressure on the leg and crumbles.  Then he stands up on the good leg, and does it again.  He does this two more times, before deciding to just kneel on the ground and wait.  When the training staff show up, you can clearly read his lips as he says "It's out, it's out."  What a tough kid.

It's been changed

It was much more harsh before the change

The only thing that saved me was the certainty that John would have front paged this if it had been news and not just a horribly titled piece on watching an old game.

Boo. I was enjoying the fact that people were reading it and having a mini-fit.

Can’t wait for Time Warner to contract NFL Network. Hopefully it will happen soon now that Comcast is set up.

The best reason for the NFL Network

is the lack of bias. There’s just as much Chargers coverage as there is for Indy, NE or either NY team.

What was the game clock when it happened?

Everything I’ve ever read said that the tear happened at Indianapolis.

It was definitely in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd quarter

Maybe he made it worse in Indy, but this was definitely when it was initially torn. The clear sign of a torn ACL to me is when the guy is trying to put weight on the knee and it just gives on him.

I'm working on this

I may have been able to find video of what I’m talking about. Check back tomorrow to see if I’m awesome or not.

John, I figured it out.

You weren’t watching the playoff game, you were watching the Week 14 regular season game, at Tennessee. I watched the whole second quarter of the playoff game and nothing like you described happened. I watched the second quarter of the Week 14 game, and there it was right at the 11 minute mark of the 2nd quarter, exactly how you described it.

That wasn’t when Philip tore his ACL, that happened at Indianapolis. This moment was when he sprained the MCL in the other knee.

Just figured out the same thing

From doing the same thing you did. Damn NFL Replay had it mislabeled during their broadcast the other night (and I came in around the second quarter, so I missed a re-cap of records and all that). You’re sharp for catching it so quickly. Do you have tape of all the old games?

Yes.

I have most of 2007, almost all of 2008, a few from 2005 and 2006, and the 1994 AFC Championship all on my computer.

Plus

I’ve watched most of them a million times. It gives me something to do in the offseason.
