The Bucs sign Winslow for six years.
It looks like Garcia will be backing up Russel in Oakland. I guess not even Jammer scared him off.
Plaxico gets paid, Larry Johnson, not so much. It is cheaper to shoot yourself than spit on someone, let that be a lesson to you all.
Orton or Chris "anyone seen my spleen" Simms will battle it out for the top spot in Denver.
Reggie Williams stoned, tased and busted.
Are the Vikings taking on water at QB?
Banks still has us taking Maclin? I'm not buying it.
Wyche gives us Rey Maualuga, that's what I'm talking about.

Read a good rumor yesterday
It said that AJ was shopping a package of Chambers plus our 3rd rounder for a high second rounder. Then it explained that AJ was quite high on Maclin and it appeared that he would fall to us (with everyone before us so interested in OTs and defensive players). Then we’d use the second rounder to get a running back (D-Brown?), a good value OT (Britton?) or even a Safety (because it looks like all the good ones will be going in the second round). Then we’d have 3 picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds to shop for project DTs, OTs, LBs, etc.
I like the idea of replacing Chambers (declining and injury-prone) with Maclin (who looks like a young Chambers) and moving up to the top half of the second round. If our draft at the end looks something like Maclin, D-Brown, DT, Safety, OT plus scraps I’d be happy with that.

another WR project?
Even if we didn’t have Chambers, wouldn’t we be better off seeing if Floyd, Davis, or Nanee can play opposite VJ? I can’t imagine AJ taking a WR with that 1st round pick with our roster as it is now. Having a top of the line WR like VJ lets you take some chances on the other side. If we draft a WR in the first round, we would definately be ignoring some needs.

Agreed, but....
Having another top-of-the-line receiver would somewhat alleviate the needs at HB and (maybe) RT because it would help stretch the defense and open up more holes for VJ and Gates.
Naanee and Davis have done nothing to deserve a shot at the number 2 receiver spot. Grabbing Maclin would give us a top 3 of VJ, Floyd and Maclin. This upcoming year is a contract year for Rivers, Merriman, McNeil and VJ. So if Maclin plays big, it would allow us to let VJ go without worrying about if we have anyone that could fill that spot in 2010.
I’m not saying it’s likely. I’m saying it’s a rumor that I don’t think is too far-fetched. 16 might be a spot that may be too high or too low to fill a hole reasonably, so we’d be getting a 2nd round pick (which would be more reasonable for the RBs and Safeties in this draft), we’d be filling a hole a year in advance (and saving money), and we’d be alleviating the need for a strong running game and an elite offensive line.

Could it also be a salary dump?
Chambers is expensive and could free up some room for the big Rivers deal. It still doesn’t seem like it justifies another 1st round WR.

I wonder if this means Russell is done?
It feels inevitable that Garcia will eventually start for the Raiders. He provides so a better chance to win this year. I think once Russell gets benched, he might not come back.

Garcia only got a one-year deal
I think what happened here is that Garcia was looking for a starting job and nobody offered except maybe the Lions (whom he despises). Oakland probably offered him a 2 or 3 year deal as a backup and mentor to Russell and told him that he’d be given a chance to win the starting job in camp, which probably isn’t true but it doesn’t mean he didn’t believe them. So he probably decided he’d try it for a year. If he wins the job and does well as a starter, they’ll renew him. If he doesn’t win the job he can walk away with a couple years left to play elsewhere.
I think Russell “wins” the job out of camp, but by week 4 or 5 the fans and receivers start grumbling about giving Garcia a chance to turn the season around. Even if that happens, Davis will probably just hand Russell the reins again the following year. He loves that kid’s potential.

Orton
He confuses me a bit in Denver. He was very, very accurate in a west-coast system at Purdue so he should be a good fit. But all of his time spent trying to adjust to Chicago’s offense may have ruined him. He just does not seem accurate with his throws anymore. It’s a true hit-or-miss player for them.
Simms is no good for them.

Bronco fans are ever hopeful
Orton is 21-12 as a starter and was 15-2 at home (Soldier Field). Last year he was 9-6, and the Bears D was ranked 24th (Denver’s was 29th). His stats were much improved last year over previous years.
For an optimistic view of Orton, see this MHR thread: http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/4/4/823116/is-kyle-orton-merely-a-quick-fix-a
I'm one of the biggest Orton fans out there
Since he was the Purdue QB for most of my years there, but not even I will say that his won-loss record is any reflection of his talent. I root for him to succeed, but he’s nothing more than a journeyman QB. He played awful in many of those wins, especially as a rookie (which most rookies do). Of course, he has now come to a system that will probably make him look better than he is for the next couple of years. Not unlike what just happened to Matt Cassell.

That's the hope
That he has the skills to make the system go.
Considering HC McD allegedly considered trading Cutler for Cassel, Denver came out way ahead, getting a comparable QB plus 3 day one picks.
I didn’t know much about him, so I’d be interested in your take. As you can imagine, there’s been a lot of analysis over at MHR, with some great input from Bears fans. Compared to Cutler, Orton had fewer offensive weapons, a poorer running game, a comparably ranked D, and a better TD:INT ratio, while playing half his games at home field that often has difficult conditions for a QB. Nobody’s claiming his physical skills are comparable, but there may be more to him than first appears. Much like our previous Rivers v Cutler discussion, Orton may have leadership and poise that Cutler currently lacks, and that may have a bigger impact than a rifle arm.
But read the thread, it does a much better job of summarizing Denver hope than I could here.
Raiders and Garcia
I was over at the Raiders SB site this morning and their fans seem to think the AFC West is wide open now…its kinda cute, really.
I’m thinking, uh, no.

Raiders fans are so cute.
In a criminal sort of way. They always start the season full of hope!

Yeah.
I have friends who are left overs from when they were in LA…apparently the Raiders have been “rebuilding” for about two and a half decades now (with the exception of that 1 flookie kinda year) and this is ’THE YEAR WE ARE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS…BABY" ugh.
