San Diego Chargers select Brandon Hughes, CB, Oregon State
The San Diego Chargers selected Cornerback Brandon Hughes from Oregon State with the 148th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He will provide depth to the secondary for the upcoming season. Considering the Chargers already deep secondary, and the lack of a safety drafted, this could be a clue that the team may try to move a Cornerback to the Free Safety position.

I'm not sold that this means one of our big 3 CBs are moving to safety.
I think we’re drafting a backup, hoping they will make the team and hoping they might be a decent nickel corner in a few years. This guy wasn’t brought in to compete with Cason, Cro, or Jammer, he was brought in to compete with Cletis Gordon.

I think of this
like the Tribble pick last year. Some spring/summer competition and maybe a practice squad guy. I think if the Chargers were interested in moving someone to safety we’d have heard about. Paul Oliver moving to safety wasn’t exactly a secret. I think this guy may have more potential than Gordon anyway.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
