Don't forget #8

It seems to be the spot that Sanchez is going; regardless of the team

Good luck on draft day

I want to see the AFC West come back to life, go AFC West!

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

wikipedia says:
In Round 1, teams have 10 minutes to make their choice (previously 15). The decision time drops to 7 minutes (previously 10) in the second round and 5 minutes in Rounds 3-7

So, we need to wait 14 picks (I assume the lions will go right away?), that’s 2 hrs 20 minutes, that puts our start time at 3:20 and end time at 3:30

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Apr 25, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Trades slow things down

I could still be right ;)

And your assumption about the Lions has not been held up in recent pre-signed picks. Teams, for whatever reason, still eat time off the clock. It’s annoying.

It's too bad

We can’t throw up a bunch of polls. As each of “our guys” (the guys we like for the Chargers at 16) gets picked, it’d be interesting to see who we think will fall to us. Maybe, it’ll be moot depending on how many people actually hang out here. I’ll be here for the whole thing. I’m that pathetically awesome.

I want to be able to watch Padres

And I don’t get Cox. So no NFL Network available. Plus, I have no issues with ESPN’s draft coverage, grew up with it, still like it. They’ve done annoying stuff in recent years, but watching the pre-draft coverage so far, they seem to have corrected those. I’m digging it. Plus, Berman has been marginalized for the last 3-4 years. And he leaves early too.

Maybe they tried and could not find someone who wanted to move into that spot. As I posted last week the Chargers had very few options in trading down and with the Browns trading back to 17 those options got even smaller.

Cason only looks good because he’s there to play nickel. He doesn’t have the speed to start at CB in the NFL. It was a questionable first round pick that only worked because it filled a need.

Scott Wright from draftcountdown.com breaks English down:

Strengths:
Good natural athlete…Has long arms…Very quick with a burst to close…Physical…Aggressive…Can deliver the big hit…Uses his hands well…Has a terrific motor…Employs a wide array of pass rush moves…Good strength and power…Shows the ability to beat double teams…Smart…Good instincts and awareness…Extremely productive.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the size or bulk you look for in an NFL defensive end…Lacks elite timed speed…May have to make a position change at the next level…Durability is a real concern…Does not have fluid hips…Struggles in space…Did not always play against top competition.

I've been watching some of the English highlights

He reminds me of Merriman a lot. He’s definitely not a DE though. The level of competition is definitely what drops his value and makes him look good. There are some good highlights against Tennessee and Central Michigan, which is encouraging. A.J. has found a good player, but it’s still a problem that he doesn’t work the draft very well.

Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

by Wonko on Apr 25, 2009 3:49 PM PDT reply actions

I like his tackling

of course none of the highlights are going to show bad tackling.

I’m also warming to a 3 man rotation to give Phillips some rest (he looked worn out at times last year) and Merriman will be coming off an injury. But, that’s a “luxury” without a DE or ILB you can count on. This could also be a statement about A.J.’s confidence in Burnett and Binghom/Cesaire.

Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

by Wonko on Apr 25, 2009 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

The problem is, it only takes one team to take your player.

And we really have such little information about who teams actually want. If we had taken Maualuga or Wells, nobody would have called it an overdraft, and yet hear we are 12 picks later and no one has taken them.

It is true he hasn’t worked the draft well in years past, other than the Rivers trade, which has been good enough to paper over a multitude of other failures.

by benrb on Apr 25, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I also recall

A recent interview with John Spanos saying that they do a little to look at what other teams need but they focus on players on their board for the most part when asked what they do to consider what other teams are doing.

I really think that they are not skilled at making draft day trades. It’s a weakness, albeit not a huge one. The Rivers trade worked because the Giants were dead set on getting Manning.

But giving up the first rounder to get him is odd.

Any word if that is their own or Chicago’s?

Jason Smith on why he wants to be a Ram
Obviously they are at the bottom, they want to be at the top. I could feel that when I was there. I could feel that talking to guys and then I had the opportunity to to go watch the team workout and I’m feeling like I’m part of them. I’m saying "Why not us? Why are we not the ones? And I was like “whoa whoa whoa I’m not even there yet.” But why not us you know? So obviously I have a job to do and I’m going to have that same mentality, "Why not us? Why not me? Why not today? Why not this game? Why not this year? Why not this playoff? Why not this superbowl? Let’s make dreams and visions become reality.
