Anyone afraid of Kyle Orton?
Broncos reportedly also pick up two 1sts and a 3rd.

I'm sad/conflicted
I don’t want to root for the Broncos, but it’s going to be hard not to root for Orton.

The scary part isn't Orton...
What’s scary is that the Broncos got a HUGE haul…They end up with two first rounders this year (#12 & #18), two thirds this year, and two firsts next year. That’s a Hershel Walker type haul.
Forget about Orton…He’s just the caretaker. The Broncos can probably pick up their QB of the future this year or next year. They can probably pick up Mark Sanchez at #12 and still get a quality player at #18. Then they’ll still have 3 more first day picks. Wow, if they do a decent job of drafting that’s pretty scary.
I honestly have no idea what the Bears were thinking.

Herschel Walker-type?
That trade involved 18 different players and picks, this is nowhere close to that. It also gave the Cowboys 3 1sts and 3 2nds. This definitely a tidy hall, but it’s not that epic.

I was trying to remember the last player traded for 2 1sts
The first that (finally) came to mind was Joey Galloway. But Seattle didn’t get a 3rd round with that.

Keyshawn Johnson as well
returned 2 1st round picks to the Jets when he was trade to Tampa Bay, but no 3rd rounder.
Funny that the two were later traded for each other in a Dallas-Tampa swap.

Eli cost two firsts, a third and a fifth
by Steve (Grey Suit) on Apr 2, 2009 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, okay
If we go down that road, Ryan Leaf cost 2 firsts, a Second, Eric Metcalf and Patrick Sapp.
For some reason though, trading up doesn’t have the same meaning behind it. I’m not sure why.

Except they actually traded for Eli Manning, not just the draft pick that led to getting him.

but
the broncos didn’t give up their first.
We essentially gave up our first round pick in the Eli deal. So we just essentially moved up in the first and got a 1 from the next year. The Broncos got a first this year and next, and kept their current #1, plus their other pick swaps and don’t forget Kyle Orton!!!

I meant we moved back in the first.

Now, a riddle inside a paradox wrapped up in an enigma
Do we root for Cutler to do well, Bears to win a bunch of games so Denver’s 2010 pick is a low one…or do we root for Cutler to bomb, the Bears to be horrible, and the 2010 pick to be a high but expensive one for the Broncos?
I’ll vote for Cutler to do terribly, but the defense (of all things) saving his ass and the Broncos getting a low 1st. That way they won’t be in position to get Taylor Mays.
by Lenny Suckerpunch on Apr 2, 2009 3:29 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well
If he’s half as good as last year, he probably still makes the Bears a lot better. Unfortunately, the picks are now rearranged based on postseason performance, so the Bears would have to make some noise in the Playoffs to make it even lower.

Plus, there's always the [chance]
that the Broncos are terrible on their own to get a high pick. In that case, I think it’d be good to stick them with two high picks and a bunch to spend on them.

Plus, you still have to draft quality players you need. a bunch of draft picks don’t always turn into wins. We’ll see how these disciples of Belichek draft. Hopefully they were not given any of the magic Belicheck beans when they left NE. Weis and Crennel didn’t get any when they left.

There's only one disciple of the Patriots in Denver
And that’s McDaniels. I don’t think he’ll be the one pulling the trigger on draft day or doing much of the scouting. His job is to get the players ready to play well on Sundays.
Brian Xanders will be the one making the draft day decisions and he has nothing to do with the Patriots (he was with the Falcons before the Broncos).
Does that help?

I thought the general impression was that Xanders was McDaniels’ “yes” man. And that McDaniels was the one calling most of the shots (even though Xanders holds the GM title). Based on how much we all heard from Xanders vs. McDaniels during this Cutler fiasco, I would guess McDaniels is the top dog.
None the less, they still have to use their picks wisely, and neither of them have proved themselves in this regard (obviously, since they are both rookies) nor do either come from a coach or franchise that has been a hotbed of producing talent that proves itself elsewhere.

Xanders dosent report to McD
Xanders is the contract negotiator and McD is the personnel guy. They both report directly to Pat Bowlen(Owner)

Okay
But, then I wouldn’t think that McDaniels will do the Patriot’s way as much as his way. It seems like he’d be about 4th or 5th down on the totem pole when decisions were made in New England and that was only for a couple of years. Outside of Wes Welker (which is just a guess) I’d have my doubts about any players in NE that were brought in because McDaniels wanted them. And I sure as hell don’t think he had much insight into the defensive additions. If Xanders is the “yes” man, then I’d guess that he’d defer to Nolan for defensive personnel decisions.

FA acquisitions make me hopeful
Denver has done relatively well signing short-term upgrades to many positions.
But you’re definitely on to something. I fear the biggest off-season loss for the Broncos is Goodman (Shanny’s GM), to whom many credit Denver’s recent draft success. I read somewhere that Denver’s scouting is understaffed in the wake of the regime change, and that concerns me.

Now he’s going to complain about being in Chicago.

I’m waiting for that December game when the wind is whipping and he complains after a 4 interception loss.

How do you think...
Jason Campbell reacts? There were a lot of rumors that the Redskins were heavily pursuing Cutler. Does he suck it up, act like a professional, and realize this is a business? Or does he go all Cutler-like and start whining to the media and demand to be traded?
by ElectricFriar on Apr 2, 2009 3:51 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Isn't it a little different?
Cutler was an established Pro bowl elected QB. Campbell is still barely out of the fighting for his job phase. Plus, you’re kind of asking the wrong crowd here, raise your hand if you can even paraphrase a single Campbell quote or name something Campbell has done off the football field.

I don't like Cutler
But truthfully it was the Denver fans that made me hate the guy. All of their pompous bragging and posturing about how great he is, and how much better than Rivers he is pissed me off. Jay is a first class douche bag but now that he isn’t a donkey i could care less.
The Denver fans that turned on him over the past month should now shut their mouths and thank him for making their team better (assuming a decent draft).
