BFTB Mock Draft Picks 13-16

Washington Redskins - The Redskins are handing out money with both fists and have acquired Albert Haynesworth and retained Cornerback De'Angelo Hall.  They must have seen something in him that wasn't apparent when he faced the Chargers.  With the release of Jason Taylor; their most clear need is a defensive end.  Their offensive line is also rapidly aging, so an exceptional candidate that falls to them would be welcome.  Over Hogs Haven they have discussed everyone from Orakpo to Rey Maualuga, but I could see Andre Smith too if they wanted to take a risk.

Team Stats - Game Averages

Pts Yrds Pass Rush
Off 16.6 320.0 (19th) 189.1 (23rd) 130.9 (8th)
Def 18.5 288.8 (4th) 193.4 (7th) 95.4 (8th)

New Orleans Saints

Looking at the Saints is like looking at a mirror of the Chargers, very good offense coupled with a defense that has some issues. Keeping their star MLB Vilma was huge for the Saints, even with his off field issues.  The pass defense was particularly bad and they could use either a cornerback or over the top help at safety.  Also with McAllister going and Bush having surgery they suddenly find themselves in the market for a runningback.  I don't know why, but I've always liked the Saints; I find their blog on SBN is great too.  Here is their thread on Cornerbacks and Safeties at the combine.

Team Stats - Game Averages

Pts Yrds Pass Rush
Off 28.9 410.7 (1st) 311.1 (1st) 99.6 (28th)
Def 24.6 339.5 (23rd) 221.7 (23rd) 117.8 (17th)

Houston Texans

The Texans are yet another team with good offense, but not enough on the defensive side of the ball.  Both their pass and rush defense could use some tuning up.  Their linebacking corps could use shoring up, outside linebacker in particular seems a need.  Some think they could use a runningback too, but it looks to me like their most glaring needs are on defense.  The SBN blogger at Battle Red Blog thinks a trade down for one of the QBs could happen.

Team Stats - Game Averages

Pts Yrds Pass Rush
Off 21.5 382.1 (3rd) 266.7 (4th) 115.4 (13th)
Def 23.2 336.6 (22nd) 213.9 (17th) 122.6 (23rd)

San Diego Chargers

We have discussed extensively the Chargers needs at Inside Linebacker, Defensive End, Nose Tackle, Safety, Offensive Tackle or Gaurd and Runningback.

I'm starting from 1 again....

Because the mock draft in my mind changes all the time.

1. Lions – Stafford
2. Rams – Oher
3. Chiefs – Orakpo (since they got Vrabel)
4. Seahawks – Crabtree
5. Browns – Curry
6. Bengals – E. Monroe
7. Raiders – A. Smith (the Radiers love headcases)
8. Jaguars – J. Smith
9. Packers – Raji
10. 49ers – Sanchez
11. Bills – E. Brown
12. Broncos – P. Jerry
13. Redskins – Moreno
14. Saints – V. Davis
15. Texans – M. Jenkins
16. Chargers – Maualuga

Broncos could possibly grab Maualuga but I think their need for defensive linemen is too great. The Bills pick killed me. They really need a DE, a TE, a WR and could use some help on the o-line as well. Pettigrew could be the pick, but it seems way too high. I’m taking Brown and assuming they like what he can do as a DE. The Texans pick is also a bit of a head-scratcher. As always, they could use O-line help but there’s nobody left with enough talent to pick this high (in my opinion). They have all sorts of issues in their secondary and have no idea what Dunta Robinson is going to be when he comes back (is he a corner? is he a safety?). Jenkins seems like the right pick here because he’d be an upgrade over their current safeties and could be an upgrade over their current number 2 CB if they want.

And boom goes the dynamite

Redskins – Andre Smith, OT Alabama – The skins need o-line help and I think they may take a risk on smith.

Saints – James Laurinaitis, MLB Ohio State – Saints need help with their linebacking corps and see Laurinaitis as a good fit.

Texans – Matt Sanchez, QB USC – The Texans have other needs but I think it will be too hard for them to pass-up a potential franchise QB in Sanchez. I think this is a really good fir for the Texans because Sanchez will not have to start next year (but who knows how long Schaub will last for) and it will give him at least a year to adjust to the NFL.

San Diego – Tyson Jackson, DE LSU – I really hope that if Maualuga is off the board with this pick the chargers trade back and try and get a 2nd round pick but if not Jackson will probably be the best player of need left on the board for the chargers.

Don't Think So

I talk a lot of trash about the Chargers D last year but “mirror” image of the Saints is filthy. The difference between Chargers and Saints is that the Chargers actually have players that have played good defense at one point, the Saints put out warm bodies and hope and pray the can get one stop so Drew can score every drive. Laurinatis is dropping big time and I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t even a first round pick. He’s not a difference maker, doesnt hit hard, and timed slow. Chargers have no need for Cushing, he’s just a great player on paper not in real life. He is worse than Merriman, Phillips, and Jyles and maybe Applewhite and Marques Harris (who we released). OLB is not a high priority.

Draft Balls Be Kind, The Kings Need Blake! The Padres need Strausberg and the Chargers need Mauluaga!
