The Chargers were hoping to make a splash in free agency by trying to sign Tampa Bay safety Jermaine Phillips. He visited this week but Phillips ended up re-signing with the Buccaneers on Thursday.

Yeah...

but Phillips was really the cream of the crop of safeties after Dawkins was signed. Plus, if i really thought about it I could’ve seen this coming because his old position coach is now the head coach with TB.

Now we’re at the second-tier of Safeties and hopefully we can sign one for fairly cheap (and short-term). Without doing any real analysis, here are some of the ones I like that are still out there:

Darren Sharper
Sean Jones
Anthony Smith
Pierson Prioleau
Mike Brown
Atari Bigby (RFA)

Damn

Makes sense though. Without Dawkins they were looking at their defense crumbling. Jones should keep them competitive.

Looking more and more like Mike Brown makes the most sense, but I think we’re going to hesitate to sign him because he’s such an injury risk. If I was a betting man I’d put money on us trying to update the safety position through the draft rather than free agency.

funny you should bring that up

interesting article on OurLads about rookie impact by position

Not really long term enough to be conclusive. Plus I think year to year swings in team needs and draft depth at those positions affects the numbers. But it does indicate that safety is a relatively good position to find a rookie starter.

I would support picking up a rookie and letting him try to work Hart out of a job. Hart had a rough year, but I think all the DBs will look a lot better with Merriman coming back. Plus Hart is my daughters’ favorite player since he came to their school once and they would be bummed if he was cut.
