Live Blog: A.J. Smith's Press Conference
I'm going to try and live-blog the live-blog (meaning I'm adding useful comments) in the comments. Follow along!
All text shown in quote boxes has been blatantly stolen from caseybolts on the Chargers.com forums.
Summary
- Waters has been released.
- No comment on LT. They're still negotiating.
- Marcus McNeil played all season with a neck injury. He has had surgery and should be ready for training camp.
- Other notable players who have had offseason surgery: Cesaire, Hester, Osgood, Scifres, Wilhelm, Jamal Williams. All will be ready for camp.
- A.J. is disappointed in players who have had run-ins with the law, telling them to "Grow Up".

The first nugget delivered by A.J. Smith involved the release of two players. Linebacker Anthony Waters and running back Eldra Buckley won’t be back in ’09.
Waters had so much hype. What a shame. I guess this makes it almost certain that we’ll be going after a new ILB instead of promoting from within.
Also....Eldra?
That cannot be a real name. Not for a man. I won’t believe it.
*Sorry to any BFTB readers who are named Eldra….but seriously….

The team won’t pursue Igor Olshansky, Mike Goff, Marques Harris or Jeremy Newberry back.
Newberry did a good job but is old and unnecessary at that money. Olshansky and Goff are expected, Harris not so much. Harris struggled in the beginning of the season and I think eventually got hurt, but he certainly had the skills to be Philips backup. I guess AJ likes the other guys we have better.
Marcus McNeil had neck surgery, out for 5 months
Apparently he played the entire season with a hurt neck. He should be back and at full strength by training camp.
Props to these guys for playing hurt all year. I get the feeling this had something to do with Merriman setting a good example.
I like how McNeil never brought it up too. I hope he comes back full strength; necks are almost as problematic as backs.

AJ was blunt when asked about being in the news for the wrong reasons recently. He declined to address particular individuals, though.
“We’ve got some people who need to get their act together. They know who they are.”
Vincent Jackson, your General Manager is looking in your direction…..
Yes, you too Jamal…

WOW
that’s a lot. And some of those don’t make sense. How did Whitehurst hurt his shoulder? Is the clipboard that heavy?
I really, really don’t like seeing Jamal Williams up there again. Or Scifres getting work on his knee. These all just seem like standard scrapings, due to the recovery time, so let’s just hope there’s no complications in recovery.

Typical AJ Answers
Asked again about the LT negotiations:
“They’re ongoing. We’d like for him to return. I’m not going to get into diolouge. Negotiations are underway.”
Things are winding down a bit. The last question he took was regarding possible regrets on contracts he’s done.
“Absolutely not.”
AJ said they haven’t been painted into a corner with LT. He also didn’t take advantage of a chance to debunk ideas people have about Jyles Tucker’s contract, a backup deal dollars-wise that people seem to think carries Merriman money.
Sounds like that’s it. I personally think Tucker’s contract is a backup for Merriman or Philips, not just the threat of them leaving but the threat of serious injury as well. AJ loves having quality depth.
I think if A.J. thought negotiations weren’t going to work out he would’ve taken this opportunity to release LT. I take this as a good sign that something will get done in the coming days.
If you assume no positional upgrades
Then the roster breaks down
On offense:
LT: McNeill, LG: Dielman, C: Hardwick, RG: Forney, RT: Clary, Backups: Mruczkowski, Shelton?
Need: Backup C, Backup G/T
WRs: Chambers, Jackson, Davis, Naane, Floyd?, Osgood?
Need: None, maybe 1 (special teamer) if Floyd or Osgood are gone
TEs: Gates, Manumaleuna, Chandler
Need: None
RBs: Tomlinson?, Sproles
Need: At least 1 backup RB
FBs: Hester, Tolbert
Need: None
QB: Rivers, Volek, Whitehurst
Need: None
1-10-DEN 18 (9:52) (Shotgun) 6-J.Cutler pass short right intended for 19-E.Royal INTERCEPTED by 93-L.Castillo (95-S.Phillips) at DEN 18. 93-L.Castillo to DEN 14 for 4 yards (62-C.Wiegmann). 6-J.Cutler pouts ob to DEN 25 for 11 yards.
Defense
DEs: Cesaire, Castillo
Need: At least 2
DTs: Williams, Binghom
Need: No need per se, but it would be nice to see less of a drop off
OLBs: Merriman, Phillips, Tucker
Need: At least 1 to replace Harris (or maybe that’s Applewhite?)
ILBs: Cooper, Wilhelm, Dobbins, Siler
Need: Siler is ST/GL only, so another real ILB, maybe 2.
CBs: Jammer, Cromartie, Cason, Gordon?
Need: Probably 1
Ss: Weddle, Hart, Oliver, Gregory
Need: No need per se, but you could have 1 more or cut someone.
So assuming you keep Osgood, Floyd, LT, Shelton and Gordon. Then count Scifres, Binn and Kaeding
That’s 45 known player (46 with Applewhite).
You’ve got 7-8 spots to fill to divide between:
1 C, 1 G/T, 1 RB, 2 DE, 1 DT, 1 OLB, 2 ILB, 1 CB and 1 S.
And I don’t what the point of this was. My brain just told me that I needed to make a list after hearing some concrete names from A.J. Smith regarding who will be on the team in 2009 and who won’t.
I didn't say that
He’s on the list. He’s one of the 45/46.

I'm not 100% sure they will keep Tolbert?
I think he is going have to play really well in the pre-season to keep his roster spot.
Fair enough
But A.J. didn’t say he was gone, so I counted him.

Waters
For what it’s worth Waters was the best dancer on the team. Dude would get everyone fired up before kickoff.
Agreed
Him and Antwan Applewhite both I thought.
