Not As Big Names from Combine Who Could Help

Charger Need Areas:

RB

I really like Andre Brown RB NC State as a big back with speed and hands.  He is 225 and can deliver a blow as well as run away.  He came from a pass happy attack and has low mileage.  He had around 30 catches as well.  Big enough and willing to block.  Willing to lower shoulder and carry defenders.

OL

Duke Robinson, OT-G, Oklahoma.  A 6'8'' 332 tackle who is adept at drive blocking and getting off for the run.  This might actually allow the Chargers to run to the right instead of behind Dielman and McNeil 100% of the time.

DE

Jarron Gilbert, DE San Jose St.  - This kid is famous for jumping out of a pool and landing on his feet which shows some of his athleticism.  But at 6'6' 288, he ran under 4.9, jumped 35 inches and repped 225 28 times.  He has a Jason Taylor kind of body, our DL had problems getting penetration because Castillo, Igor and Jamal couldn't beat one on ones.  Just having deflections at his size would help our secondary and he is would help the run d.  Still a bit raw and not the most productive vs. b-level competition but that will keep his stock down.

DT

Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss - BJ Raji will be off the board by the time the Chargers pick but this guy is second best and makes plays.  Was very productive and made 13 TFL.  He has quick feet for his size. Jamal isn't getting any younger and it would be ideal to get a tackle, play him in Igor's spot for now until Jamal's knees give out.

LB

Darnell Ellerbe, LB Georgia - Brandon Siler, Anthony Waters and Tim Dobbins have the inside track to Wilhelm's spot but I would like to see more athleticism and tenaciousness from someone others than Cooper.  Ellerbe is a tad undersized but is quick enough to cover. (I really am liking Rey Maulanga less and less - he wasn't terribly productive at SC with its NFL prospects at every defensive position, biggest play was hitting a QB trying to get out of bounds, he gets burned way too much, would rather make wow play than the necessary one.)

S

William Moore, S, Missouri - I'd like to see Chargers go here with the 3rd round pick if he's not off the board.  He is a coverage, ball-hawking free safety that is bigger (no Carolina last plays) than Weddle and much more athletic and explosive.  Reliable tackler, developing hitter.  Could be just the ticket.

Things to beware of

-Andre Brown is someone who had a very good combine and now everyone wants him. Beware of players that don’t shine until the combine. He is big, strong and fast but he never put up great numbers and had some problems with injuries during his college career. From seeing Andre Brown at the combine I’d compare him to Derrick Ward. Good back, solid back but there’s nothing that special about him. Could work very well with LT, but I feel like other teams have fallen in love with him and he’ll be gone by time we pick in the 3rd round. The 1st round is way too high for him.

-Did William Moore not work out at the combine? I see no stats about him at all and didn’t see him on tv. For someone who had such a disappointing year I’m surprised that he passed on this opportunity to stand out as the best safety.

-Peria Jerry is a good choice. I’m actually starting to think when we’re up to pick we’re going to have our choice of Maualuga, Malcolm Jenkins (as a safety), Peria Jerry and Ron Brace. I think the right choice is Maualuga or Jenkins, but I won’t go into detail right now. I’ll post something up later today about what to do with that first round draft pick and why.

I'd really like to see

the choice used on a LB or the defensive line. If the front seven is great; they will cover a lot of flaws in the secondary.

William Moore is not a good fit for us

He doesn’t project to be anything more than a league average SS at this point and one who would be a liability in coverage.

I’m more interested in spending a late round pick on Keith Ellison, picking up a okay free agent to compete with Hart and then waiting to see if we could draft somebody better next year if Ellison and Oliver aren’t developing.

Not very well

We’ll talk after you have more than 10 career interceptions.
