BFTB Mock Draft Picks 5-8

Cleveland Browns - The dog pound has mostly been filled with Poodles these days as the high flying offense of last season stumbled badly this season.  Derek Anderson & Company put up an average of 14.5 points per game as things went South quickly.  Since hiring Mangini the Browns have been cleaning house and clearly need help on both sides of the ball; they are also losing a slew of free agents.  They may be losing Safety Sean Jones; but there certainly isn't a safety worth taking this high.  The team could use a quality linebacker.  The SBN Blog has a discussion of the team picks here.

Team Stats - Game Averages

PtsYrdsPassRush
Off 14.5 249.1 (31st) 148.8 (31st) 100.3 (26th)
Def 21.9 356.5 (26th) 204.6 (14th) 151.9 (28th)

Cincinati Bengals- They are losing Houshmandzadeh and Ocho Cinco, so they will likely need replacements at wide receiver; but Crabtree has been the only wideout that has projected this high.  Their offensive line was woeful surrendering over 50 sacks on the year; a quality OT seems like a good match here, but a good pass rusher could work too.  The Bengals blog seems torn between Oline and a receiver.

Team Stats - Game Averages

PtsYrdsPassRush
Off 12.8 245.4 (32nd) 150.4 (30th) 95.0 (29th)
Def 22.8 325.5 (12th) 205.4 (15th) 120.1 (21st)

Oakland Raiders - The Raiders went for a lot of big money free agents and came up empty.  They did manage to retain Seabass and Asomugha, two of their key players but at an enormous cost.  Watching the Chargers play them; their offensive line was pourous and their receivers were working hard to achieve adequacy.  Their defensive line clearly struggled against the rush; but they have a decent secondary.  Rayder K looks at defensive tackles over at Silver and Black Pride.

Team Stats - Game Averages

PtsYrdsPassRush
Off 16.4 272.3 (29th) 148.1 (32nd) 124.2 (10th)
Def 24.3 360.9 (27th) 201.3 (10th) 159.7 (31st)

Jacksonville Jaguars - I was convinced the Jaguars were for real last year; finding them with the number eight pick is a real surprise.  They seem to be on the low mid range in most categories.  The Jaguars released Drayton Florence, WR Jerry Porter and RB Fred Taylor so all those positions could be targets.  Their left tackle on the offensive line was also spotty and had some off field incidents.  Here is the Big Cat Country take on some of the mocks.

Team Stats - Game Averages

PtsYrdsPassRush
Off 18.9 319.1 (20th) 208.3 (15th) 110.9 (18th)
Def 22.9 330.9 (17th) 224.1 (24th) 106.8 (13th-T)

There it is, just put your picks for 5-8 in the comments.  Anybody who still wants to make their picks can just pick all eight.  Here is last weeks summary.

Let's get crazy

5. Browns trade down because they really want Beanie Wells. For the purpose of staying simple, let’s say they trade this pick to….

5. Oakland Raiders – Michael Crabtree

6. Cincinnati Bengals – Michael Oher

7. Cleveland Browns – Chris “Beanie” Wells (although it’s too high for him without a big, big combine/pro day)

8. Jacksonville Jaguars – Malcolm Jenkins

This group is a little tougher than that first four

5. Cleveland Browns – Malcom Jenkins CB Ohio State University – Jenkins may be the best overall player in this draft and I don’t know if the Browns will be able to pass on a guy who could be a shutdown corner for them for the next 10 to 15 years. I also think that there is an outside chance that they could pick Knowshon Moreno here Lewis is turning 30 this year and only had 4 rushing TD’s last year. Oakland Raiders – Michael C

Cincinnati Bengals – Eugene Monroe OT Virginia – The Bengals QB’s were sacked 51 times last season. The Bengals have one of the best QB’s in the league but they have to keep him up right if they want him to be able to play in all 16 games.

Oakland Raiders – Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech – Al likes big name players and he will certainly get one in Crabtree. While I like Crabtree a lot there is a voice in the back of my head that keeps saying DeWayne Jarrett and Mike Williams. If Crabtree is drafted by the Raiders I really hope the voice in the back of my head is right…but I guess it will be a moot point since the raiders wont have anyone to throw the ball to him or a O-Line capable of giving anyone enough time to throw the ball to him.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Jason Smith OT Baylor – Its a little crazy that I think that four OT’s will go in the first 8 picks but alot of teams need O-line help and this class is loaded with dominate OTs. The only other player I could see the Jags taking with this pick would be Jeremy Maclin WR from Missouri but I think he would be too much of a stretch as the eighth overall pick in the draft.

Crabtree

Is much better than Jarrett and Mike Williams. Those were players who dominated the college game with their size and hands. Crabtree dominated the college game with precise route-running and unbelievable strength and speed with the ball in his hands. He reminds me more of Anquan Boldin than anyone else.

I agree with the Boldin refference

But I worry about him being able to get separation from the DB’s in the NFL. I don’t know if he was really challenged by the DB’s in the big 12 and I wonder how he will respond when and NFL DB jams him at the line.

Don't forget

Anquan Boldin is 2 inches shorter and ran a 4.71 40 time at the combine. Separation isn’t necessarily about size and speed. I think the route-running and smoothness of a Crabtree will help him get separation at the next level.

This probably means that he’s not Andre Johnson, Fitz or Calvin Johnson. But he might be more of a Houshmandzadeh, or the aforementioned Boldin, or a Roy Williams with better hands.

Crabtree is not the same as Jarrett or Williams

Jarrett and Williams got by almost exclusively on size alone and took advantage of being on a team that had too many stud offensive players to focus on any one guy. Crabtree is good a route runner, smooth in his transitions and has great hands. Crabtree is a much more complete receiver than either of those guys. He also played as the focus point of the Texas Tech offense, where teams knew they had to double him and he still had outstanding games, or at least he did before the high ankle sprain. I don’t recall Jarrett or Williams showing the consistency or overall production that Crabtree has shown. On top of that, I think Crabtree might be a smarter player. He was a high school quarterback and I think that helps give him an edge as a WR.

All right

5. Cleveland Browns take Everette Brown; the Browns OLB’s only picked up six sacks, Brown looks to be a big upgrade that would put heat on the QB.

6. Cincinnati Bengals take Andre Smith, a franchise tackle has to be the pick here I think. 51 sacks is going to get someone’s eye put out.

7. Oakland Raiders take OT MIchael Oher; the Raiders have to upgrade their line. How on earth they are going to pay him I haven’t a clue.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars take OT Eugene Monroe; three tackles in a row, but for the Jaguars running game they need this upgrade.
