Yikes...
Does this mean we have seen the end of LT’s career wearing a powder blue? I hope not…but his return now does not look promising…:(

If this just buys them time to work out a long-term deal I’m all for it.

Yeah, I don’t see Sproles as the kinda guy who plays with 1 year deals.

I agree
Still six million if they don’t come to terms seems like a lot though. He is much better as the change of pace back; I guess you just wonder for LT or someone else now.

6 mill seems like nothing
When I first thought of the idea of using the franchise tag it seemed like we’d paying >$8 mill if not $10 mill. When I started hearing that the numbers was closer to $6 mill, I started to believe that there is no way they wouldn’t do it. Almost every other position (besides punter and kicker) are waaaay higher than this. This is a franchise tag bargain.

Bargain is a relative term
When Sproles is getting paid when LT is getting paid (and was getting paid when on top of his game), it seems a little ridiculous.
All Chargers fans, yourself included, have been talking about upgrading the RB position through the draft or free agency. Well now we have 12 million put into the position, not even including Hester or Tolbert. Do you really think we’re going to go into the season with 15-17 million put towards the running back position? Where will we get the money to pay Merriman, McNeil and Rivers?
What strikes me now is why would LT take a pay-cut? The Chargers have decided that a RB that has a history of injuries and only puts up stats sporadically (including an abysmal start in the most important game of the season) is worth 6 million dollars each year. Why would LT be worth any less the Sproles? Also, how’s it going to look if we’re going into the season with LT getting 3 million (or less) and Sproles making 6?
Placing this tag on Sproles was the wrong move, for 50 different reasons, and personally I think it forces LT to completely devalue himself (not “swallow his ego”, but devalue himself) and play as the number 1 running back while making backup or third-string money or try and force a trade. Also, this all but guarantees, because of all the money reasons mentioned above, that a RB will not be drafted by us in the first round.

Pay cut is kind of wierd concept for me
At least in the NFL. Since contracts are not guaranteed, you are not really taking a pay cut so much as negotiating an equally beneficial extension. NFL contracts are so backloaded that teams don’t have any intention of every paying out the final years. Agents do these deals to give “respect” to the players, but it’s really a load of BS. LT is getting in that range of his contract that is far to unwieldy to manage with the cap. Maybe he’ll see it as a pay cut and have a problem, but any smart businessman associated with the NFL will not. LT is one injury away from never seeing any of that money pass 2009, so it’s in his best interest to come to terms with something that was negotiated while the team still seems him as a productive running back instead of risking going to free agency as damaged goods and leaving behind the team he wants to finish his career with.

Long Term
If a long term is worked out which included the 2009 season, can the franchise tag be used on another player?

No
I don’t think so. And even if it could, the deadline to franchise a player is tomorrow.

Just wondering
if a player could use the franchise as a negotiation tactic. Then if such a player signed with another team before the deadline would the original team get to tag some other player. I’ve probably had too many beers tonight and am over thinking.

I'm not sure what you meant by "signed with another team before the deadline "
But free agents aren’t allowed to sign with other teams before the franchise tag deadline. So maybe that answers your too many beers question.

Not this year
But who else might they use it on? Sproles was really the only ‘big’ talent they were losing this season.

Too much money
I’ll save any scathing rants until we see if the team can lock him up long-term at a cheaper rate.

I Agree
F*cking AWFUL idea if they can’t lock him up long term.

LT's comments tonight
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a kick returner, or a backup running back. You should be franchised if you’re valuable.”
Is LT putting Sproles in his place? Does LT know he’ll be here next year for sure? Or am I just reading too much into this comment.

probably all three

I Agree
Maybe less putting Sproles in his place than rationalizing his own contract negotiations for less. Anybody else wonder if they are setting up an LT vs. Sproles competition to fire up both guys next season?
