Van Heusen's HOF Voting: Round 2
This post is sponsored by JCPenney and Van Heusen
It's getting closer to that time of year, where five or so legends of football are enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you missed the first post I did about it, you probably don't know that Van Heusen and JCPenney are teaming up to do an online "Fan's Vote" for who should be in the Hall of Fame.
Already, it's led to a bit of a controversy with the fan's disagreeing with roughly half of the 25 semifinalists picked by the selection committee. I think the large discrepancy between what the fans want and what's they're getting is going to lead to fan participation in the future. As in, the more the fans show their appreciation for this Fan's Vote the more likely it will become that the NFL will give the fans the opportunity to vote somebody into the hall.
We've reached Round 2 of the Fan's Vote, which allows you to choose which of the 25 semi-finalists you'd like to see inducted. Unlike the first round, you can only vote for one person this time instead of four and unfortunately Don Coryell is no longer an option. Poor Don. Next year, around the time of the vote, I'm going to try to get together with Kellen Winslow and Dan Fouts to give Coryell all of the publicity he can possibly get.
Until then, I've decided to give my vote to the most deserving of the group of underappreciated players and coaches. I'm not going to tell you who I believe that is, so as not to sway your vote, but I recommend you look through the list of candidates and avoid the obvious choices (Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, etc.). They'll get enough votes. Use your vote to voice your support for somebody who truly needs it.

Don Coryell IS a semifinalist

The Fan’s Vote website is wrong! I’ve tried to contact the Chargers and the Hall of Fame to tell them so it can be corrected, but to no avail. The online voting is a sham – I don’t know where they got the 25 people listed on the website as semifinalists, but several other of the actual semifinalists in addition to Coryell are missing (ie: Terrell Davis, Roger Craig, Dermontti Dawson, Chris Doleman, etc., etc.).
Perhaps you can contact someone and get this fixed?? Jim Steeg said in an interview that the fans’ voting would be taken into account when the final vote is taken – if so, several deserving candidates, including Coryell, are getting jobbed.
You're right, but....
That makes sense. The Fan’s Vote had their own list of 25 semifinalists that was different from the official 25. The site I checked that listed the “official” semifinalists was showing the list from last season, which I mistook for this year’s list because it’s 95% the same guys. SO round 2 of this vote is with the 25 guys that got the most votes in Round 1.
The fan’s vote will be looked at, but it’s not actually going to contribute.
