Chargers Week 14 Playoff Scenarios

The San Diego Chargers will clinch a playoff spot this week if one of the following scenarios happens:

  1. SD win + BAL loss or tie + PIT loss or tie + NYJ loss or tie + MIA loss or tie

  2. SD win + BAL loss or tie + PIT loss or tie + NYJ loss or tie + NE loss or tie

  3. SD win + BAL loss or tie + PIT loss or tie + JAC tie + NE loss

  4. SD tie + BAL loss + PIT loss + NYJ loss + MIA loss

Don't get your hopes up though.  Here's a list of the game to watch this week with the teams that Chargers fans should be rooting for in bold not crossed out:

Yikes.  I wouldn't bet on any of those games going the way we need them to, but it's still a good sign that there is a remote possibility of clinching the playoffs this week.

It is really good news if we can win this week

Because then basically those teams would have to combine for that over the next 3 weeks for us to clinch a playoff spot.

I still think play to win every game and work at the #2 seed

Bengals and Broncos

I’ll be rooting for the Chargers, and of course frot the Vikings and the Colts.

I think this is really exciting

So far we’ve just been focused on the Chargers winning and maybe on a Monday night game or two we’ve said that so-in-so needs to lose because it’ll help the Chargers make the playoffs. Well, those were just guesses until now. This feels tangible.

I know, I know we want the #2 seed, home field, a bye and another division title to add to the trophy case, but still the idea of the regular season is to make the playoffs and we are oh so close. It also makes Thursday’s game more interesting (not that I get NFL Network or have time to watch it that night) because instead of just seeing it as a team we are competing with for the playoffs losing the game, it is now on our checklist of things that have to happen for the Chargers to clinch in week 14. Okay, maybe that doesn’t get all of you excited, but it gets my juices flowing.

Its great to get a clinch before the last week

You said it yourself the goal is a playoff spot in the regular season and for a super bowl in the playoffs. Feels better then the nail biters we have had last few year.

Exciting and hard to believe

After week 5 there was a lot of talk about who the new coach should be, how bad the team sucked and how boned we were. Now with 4 games left we have chance to clinch a play off spot this week and have a very reasonable chance of getting a first round bye.
I held out some hope that things would turn around this season, but at the time I did not think that they could string this many wins in a row together. I am going to enjoy every bit of the end of this season.

The coaching still worries me

But my confidence in Norv has risen a lot over the last few weeks and it has nothing to do with the wins and losses. Norv is a doing a much, much better job with on field decisions that he ever has in his career, even the year that we went to the AFC Championship. Almost every criticism about Norv’s coaching style he has now fixed and that’s a credit to Norv for stepping his game up. The slow starts still bother me, but you can’t fix that this year.

Agreed.

His playcalling has improved immensely. He’s calling more quick passes when teams get real blitz-happey, and to help compensate for the lack of a running game. He’s making sure the tackles get help blocking the premier pass-rushers. He’s also varying the play-calling and keeping defenses off balance.

I never had much of a problem with Norv's playcalling

The route combinations they run to big gains are just fantastic. I don’t see that he’s doing anything different that before. I do think that it’s possible that the offense has matured now to the point where the plays the feel comfortable running are much more varied. Two years ago there were probably plays that Norv didn’t have enough confidence in to call whereas now that he’s seen them run in practice for 2 years he calls them whenever he thinks it matches up well with the defense.

My issues with Norv stemmed more for clock management, timeout and challenge usage. I guess the clock management could be related to play calling though.

Just going from memory

Especially early this year, he seemed to try to force the deep ball. The Denver game comes to mind. He never adjusted to the blitz, kept calling 5 and 7 step drops and 20 yard routes and the result was Phil getting sacked 4 times in the second half. You look at the games vs. the Eagles and the second time vs. the Broncos, big blitzing teams, he called a lot more quick, short routes.

I'm not saying he's perfect

And I think Rivers is equally at fault for the sacks in the first Denver game. But, I don’t have a real problem with his playcalling. The NFL is a big boy league and teams will find ways to attack you that sometimes you won’t adjust properly too. Even the best playcallers fall victim to that. I’m not saying you should like it, but personally I’m not going to hold that against him considering all the good playcalling I’ve seen.

I'm cool with that.

You just said you didn’t see a problem with his playcalling, and I was pointing out an example of when I felt there was a problem.

I'm still worried about Rivera.

I’m afraid that he’ll revert to the passive approach that characterized us early this season, and his time in Chicago. Specifically, that he’ll again get afraid to blitz when going up against premier quarterbacks.

Playoffs!??!! Playoffs!?!?!

Hi everyone. I’m in the (un)fortunate position of living in San Diego and being both a Bengals and a Chargers fan. The upcoming CIN@SD is already giving me a stomach ache. I really want a bye week for the bengals, and whoever wins that game will have the inside track to a bye.

IMO, for both the Bengals and the Chargers, that is THE most important remaining regular season game, and a great matchup. GO Bolts [except when the bengals come to town]!

So if a first round bye is important to you at all, root against the Bengals, you should add it to the list in the OP.

Who Dey!

If we can beat Dallas and then Cincy next week.

I think it’s safe to say we got a playoff spot wrapped up, but here’s to hoping we clinch that #2 seed.

by Harsh_619 on Dec 8, 2009 12:22 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't even need to be those two.

Any two wins will guarentee us a wild card berth. That’s why it’s exciting to talk about how to wrap it up this week, because it means that two wins period would clinch at least the No. 6 seed.

Of course, in the First Round Bye race, that makes the next game somewhat of a non factor, at least for Cinci. If they lose to Minnesota, and then beat us, they’d need to drop one to the Chiefs or Jets in order for us to get that seed… but then they might be competing against the Broncos instead and it’s all aaaggggg lets just win some games.

I have to root for the Browns, Lions, Bucs, Jags, and Panthers?

What do you think I am insane or something!?

Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.

Juju, We applaud your devotion and pure decency throughout the season.

Careful about rooting For the Jags ...

I know no one takes Jacksonville seriously, but right now they’re a bigger threat to knocking us OUT than the Dolphins…. I know we’re talking about a scenario for clinching a play-off spot this week, but that’s not going to happen (obviously).

Yes, darn right fun to think there’s a scenario out there (or 4, I guess — thanks, John!), but we’d be lucky to get just two of those five upsets.

When I look at the schedule and am considering our play-off chances (which are realistically 75% to win the division and over 90% to get in either as a division champ or as a wildcard), I’m just happy knowing that there are games like Jax-Miami in which one of those contending teams is guaranteed a loss (or, okay, a tie). Same with the Pittsburgh-Baltimore and Jacksonville-New England games in week 16 and the Pittsburgh-Miami game in Week 17.

by jctess on Dec 10, 2009 12:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

On the other hand ...

If one prefers the possibility of having to face Jacksonville in the playoffs in some scenario rather than some of these other teams, knowing that we’re very likely to get in the post-season (which we are), then go ahead and root for Jax and give that 7th loss to the Phins (although with a road game against Tennessee and home games against the Steelers and Texans, they’re likely going to get it anyway — and will actually probably finish 8-8).

If we’ve got home field against any of the 6 AFC contending teams listed in John’s 5 games, I like our chances against any of them. I guess I’d fear Pittsburgh the most, so I’d really like to see them OUT (no offense — just from the standpoint of our chances of advancing).

Baltimore’d also beat us in a one-on-one head-to-head tiebreaker, and they could be dangerous; but I don’t like their chances of having to beat us twice in a season in San Diego, so as long as we’re winning the division (or at least not getting knocked out of even being in the play-offs — by the Ravens), I don’t mind if the Ravens win 3 of 4 (or even win out) and get in as a wildcard.

Looking at it realistically

1 win will get us a playoff spot. Pittsburgh plays Baltimore later this season, so one of those teams is guaranteed 7 losses. Hard to see the Jets and Miami winning out too.

by SJO on Dec 9, 2009 4:58 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

"Realistically" -- CORRECT!

Technically, 1 one win only could see us losing the division and coming up short to Jacksonville and Pittsburgh or Baltimore…. We’d have the tiebreaker one-on-one with Miami, but who knows if more than 2 teams are tied at 10-6?…

Anyway, I doubt any of the four 6-6 teams will win out at this point, although the Ravens probably have the best chance, with the Steelers the 2nd best…. I agree with you that the chances of the Dolphins or the Jets winning out are very slim (if not none)…. And ditto for the chances we drop 4 straight…. Much better chance that we’ll WIN 4 straight(!), although the odds are about perfectly split between our winning 2 and winning 3 of our last 4….

The difference between winning 2 or winning 3 will likely determine whether we get a 1st round bye, and the Bengal game looms largest with respect to that.

by jctess on Dec 10, 2009 12:34 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well Pittsburgh just lost

So now we’re going for Bolts win, Ravens loss, Dolphins loss, and Jets loss. Let’s gogogogo.

Wishlist: Lackey AND Halladay. Somehow.
